While I'd agree that dealing with ads is annoying, I think there may be another way to look at it. Companies will always seek a way to reach their customers. This can take many different forms, but they all fall under the guise of "advertisement". And make no mistake, they will make every effort to reach you. If it's not on your TV, it will be via email. If not via email, it will be on your phone. If it's not on your phone, it will be... You get the point.
So, it would seem that short of living in the woods we'll have to deal with ads in one form or another. Granted, some are less intrusive than others, but they will always be around and will always be looking for new ways to "intrude" into our consciousness. We might as well get something free for dealing with them. Right?...
This may be a stupid question, but where does the nuclear material come from in the first place? Is it any less dangerous before we pull it out of the ground than it would be when we put it back in?
"Tell me a system to measure the effectiveness of a teacher and then merit pay works."
I think that would be a local decision rather than a one-size-fits-all measurement. The local parents/administrators/teachers know what they need more than the rest of us. I'm sure there would be abuses, but overall I think it would be a better system if it was kept as local as possible.
The more of other people's posts I read the more I like your answer. Done correctly, you wouldn't have to waste too much floor space with these little hidden passageways. You could use them for all kinds of stuff, too. If you had removable shelving for the walls you might be able to use it as storage most of the time.
If you're already willing to change jobs, then just slack off at your current job. You've got to figure you'll get a couple weeks at least until they fire you. Plus, if they fire you then you can get unemployment while you look for a job.
I recently went to Japan for a couple weeks. While the train system was cheap for visitors (because of the special pass), it was just as expensive to ride the train as it was to fly for residents. Most of these distances were the 50-300 mile ranges you are speaking of.
I can't see you from here, but I'll take your word on it that you "look like a jackass". I'm not sure why that's Slashdot's fault though...

It's seems like every time I hear about something "new" in the computer science field (like procedural synthesis) it is actually an idea that some smart dude thought of 40 years ago and just couldn't implement on vaccuum tubes. I don't think we're as smart as we think we are.
"Why would you go through all the trouble of testing the dueterium/lithium samples in a reactor when they could just as easily do a purity test?"
Probably because the people who work on nuclear physics & nuclear weapons technology are really, really stupid. They're probably not nearly as smart as you.

While I would most certainly like to be able to download non-DRM'd, lossless music from a legal source, I can't right now. It doesn't really effect my life any. I'm still entertained and all, I just don't buy music. Of course, I haven't bought music for years so it's not much of a change.
I will say this though, if I can ever get lossless, non-DRM'd music on the 'net I'll be all over it. Until then, life as usual.
I guess I came off a little "flamebate-ish", so sorry about that.
My experience and opinion of the American automotive industry comes not only from being a consumer, but also from being a mechanical engineer. I've worked in U.S. automotive industry and I must say that a lot of the design & manufacturing of the big three are pretty bad. My experience with the Japanese automotive industry has been much better. It's a difficult thing to quantify, but they are certainly more precise & efficient at designing and producing quality automobiles.
I would have to agree that the traditional content providers would continue to provide a higher level of quality than your average Joe. But let's not overlook the potential for many people to get their 15 minutes of fame.
Jib-Jab, Numa Numa, Star Wars Kid, etc. are all fun little things that would be great to have "ready to view" on my TV. I remember my friends in college doing some "remakes" of movies that looked terrible but were freakin' hilarious. I see no reason why these one-offs couldn't make a bit of money.
Now, would I get a "Season Pass" to Uncle Bobs Comedy Hour? Probably not. But you never know. The key to the internet is just having so much available to the masses. The folks will find a way to sort the wheat from the chaff.
Let go ahead and point out the obvious: You shouldn't buy "American" automobiles. They suck. Buy a German or Japanese car instead. They don't suck. Actually, buy a Toyota, they're probably more American than GM, Ford, or Chrysler anyway.
You know, I just finished reading War & Peace. I had heard that it is the greatest novel of our time. All I can say is that our "time" must suck.
I say read what you like and read what you learn from. Forget what other people tell you is good. That's not to say there aren't some great classics out there.
As you mention, global oil supplies may dwindle over the next 30 to 50 years. Likewise, social security funds will dwindle. I say we start chucking old people into gas-tanks and kill two birds with one stone.
Oh wait, in 50 years I'll be an old person... Damn.
That's my basic problem with all of these "writable screen" technologies. None of them have the give & dragging resistance that paper & pen(cil) have. I'm even picky about what kind of pen I use on paper, because some pens just suck to write with. It seems to me that it will be a while before I can write on a screen and feel comfortable doing it.
Besides, how would I lose my notes if they're all conveniently located on my PC? Where's the fun in that?

Just don't put "ethical" on your resume.
Tell us how you really feel.
Yet another story from "The Offices of Captain Obvious".
Where's the "Talking out of ass" mod?
I guess that would just be overused here...
Do you remember sarcasm? I sure do. Dingleberry. :^)
Do you have any data to back that up? I've never seen a "weighted" measure of how much code is in the world.

Careful, you're starting to sound republican. That talk will get you banned around here.
You sound bitter. Just a bit. Need a hug?
Wait, nevermind, I'm a Republican geek, we don't do sympathy or personal contact. Get a job, commie!

IMHO & in a lot of consumer's opinions as well.

You forgot to put "IMHO" at the end of your post. Because really, that's all that statement is credible as.
