In this case, Profit occurred in Step 5. No step in this process is a mystery except Step 4.5: They smoke a whole bunch of ?? and decide to raise the prices.
Version 1.6 is in beta testing and should be stable in a few months (or less). Judging from the activity on the Joomlacode site, I'd bet sooner.
Anyone considering buying this book should wait a few months for it to be made obsolete by the release of version 1.6.....that way they can get it at a discount.
Seriously though, anyone considering buying this book should wait until they write the beginners guide for 1.6 which has radical changes and completely eliminates the legacy layer, as well as single level depth section/category organization.
"Locked to no Apps, no one is going to buy that (except Apple fanboys)" "No way to change a battery! No one is going to buy that (except Apple fanboys)" "No flash, no one is going to buy that (except Apple fanboys)"
Now, I'm an Apple user (I own 2, a Macbook for my wife and a Mini for me) but I'm hardly a fanboy. I bought the Mini because one of my clients required software testing to be performed on OSX, and the Macbook so I didn't have to disinfect my wife's computer weekly.
I completely agree with all of your (slashdot derived) points above, but you're forgetting the fanboys and the brand loyal. I liked my iPod until the battery died and I had to dismantle the thing to replace it, so that's a valid point for me - I won't buy a product that doesn't have a user replaceable battery. No Apps - not an issue with the Mini or Macbook, using Crossover and VMWare I have a wide selection of software to choose from. No Flash, I'm not a fan of flash, but there are times that it becomes useful so this is also a valid point for me.
Will I own an iPad? Unlikely - unless I receive it as a gift. What will I use? Likely that I'll continue to use my Thinkpad T61 until I get something more powerful, or I might consider a WePad when they become available.
If they're going to do this, they really need to make the badge more realistic.
Instead of a game controller on the badge, they somehow need to convey how playing video games is a complete waste of time. The badges aren't nearly big enough to show a 40 year old fat virgin on a recliner in his moms basement surrounded by twinkie wrappers and empty pizza boxes.
Be Prepared - for what.....Aliens? Zombies?
I fail to see how this will help them in later life. Unlike outdoor survival skills which can save your life, playing video games only increases your proficiency in playing video games.
As a Boy Scout, I learned knots that I thought were stupid at the time - but I still use them to this day.
When I'm working on a project and want to show something, I call it a P.C. (Proof of Concept) release (as opposed to pre-alpha) and offer no support or documentation. There are stages of development that occur before alpha.....
After a project is requested, my first stage is brainstorming and usually involves several colors of dry-erase markers and a white board. This stage of development is unlikely to crash your smart phone.....but could be called pre-alpha.
Why would the government spend a few of their citizens dollars for an existing tool when they can take and spend millions of their citizens dollars. They're not playing with their own money.
Remember, if they don't use all of their budget, it'll be reduced next year. They need to show budget shortfalls in order to justify a request for budget increase.
I would be more accepting of a VM or something though than a live CD for my own use.
Why not both?
VMWare Player is free, and can be configured to boot a CD. Why not a CD containing an ISO image and pre-configured VMWare player for several platforms.
1. User inserts disk 2. Autorun VMWare player 3. Bank profits
...men's typing to be a little more heavy-handed...
Do they mean "heavy" as in pressure, or as in awkward?
The article mentions electronic sensors connected to fingers....really, who does this on a regular basis?
Sensing typing patterns and speed could be done in software but pressure could only be accomplished with pressure sensitive keyboards; how many people use one of those?
This sounds (to me) like a sham that's just plausible enough to get funded. They might be able to make it work in a lab, but the real world is not a tightly controlled environment with sensors attached to fingertips. The problem I see is that (once the methods are released/discovered) the users this is designed to identify will alter their usage/hardware in order to remain hidden.
That all depends on your definition of "good" and from which perspective you're classifying the message.
If they're watching old Star Trek (TOS) episodes, then they'll probably be fairly polite when they do contact us. They'd be frightened that Kirk would kick their ass and take their women. Good for us.
On the other hand, if they're watching Survivor they'll likely think we're just a step or two above primates and start planning to cleanse the planet of our species. Sure, some might be awarded immunity. Good for them.
When I'm writing code, I might as well be typing random characters because that's all she can see. Without the background to understand it, it's all jibberish to her.
She understands that I'm right because the lights are on and food is on the table, but continues to give me crap until the quarterly check arrives. I spent about 3 days writing some code a few years ago and now continue to get paid to support it. It's a great gig if you can get it.
She really likes those checks and I remind her that once in a while I write code that keeps on paying.

That is why our SAVIOR OBAMA must continue to wage the WAR ON FREEDOM at all costs...
I fixed that for you...
Perhaps he wants to change more than his financial position.
He probably does want to change the world, but that can only be done with obscene amounts of money.
His plan is to get everyone to give him their information so he can sell it and make the obscene amounts of money required to change the world.
This is Dallas, where the City Council is doing such a good job, they're trying to get 270% raises and to double the length of their terms.

This is why I don't have an iPhone.
My phones have user removable batteries. When I want the phone to be off, it's definitely off.

You're looking at it the wrong way....
Getting pestered at the campsite? Crack a special-wavelength-blue glowstick and toss it into a neighboring campsite. Go fetch!
and saw a guy with a towel over his shoulder. I thought to myself, "what's with the towel?"
Now I know
You say it like it's a bad thing. Besides, it didn't destroy everything in site....just an angel....and whatever got in its way.
And that only happened once....
This doesn't deserve "Troll"!
Somebody mod this back up. He hasn't written anything that is incorrect.
Gold Prices - Gold hasn't ever gone to zero.
Fiat Currency - US Dollars are a fiat currency.
I've adjusted your post to reflect reality...

Excuse me, it's exactly the same thing.

I know who you are!
Now I feel stupid for making the previous post.... You write great Joomla extensions.

I'd like to second the "Priceless" comment above.

Its not like they are gonna raise enough money for a rocket or anything.
Or maybe they will raise enough money to do something like this...

With a little exposure to the real world (or a short trip to Google Images) one finds that there is a brand called "Duck Tape"

Eh...knock-out hotties are overrated. Other qualities are much more important. She's a good mother and keeps her head in a crisis.
