I considered something like this after my car stereo was stolen the second time.

I thought it might be fun to have the real stereo disguised, and a modified (explosive) pullout stereo in plain view. The theory was that a transmitter could exist in the car, and a receiver/battery/detonator would be installed in the modified pullout stereo. When the stereo exceeded the transmitter range, detonation.

Wasn't there an explosive collar in an Governator movie? They breach the perimeter and it starts flashing and beeping to inform them that their head is about to be removed.

For the bracelet/anklet, why not a lethal injection instead of an explosion? Violate house arrest, and die walking to the liquor store. The only problem I see with that idea is if an actual emergency occurred (house on fire?) they would be dead either way.

Have a physical power switch AND let every device have a clock......that gets set by radio time sources and stores time zone in non-volatile memory.

Have your cake, and eat it too.

Or each device could utilize a normally-open relay for power switching.

Your DVR can record a show, then open the relay when finished.
Press one button to turn your microwave on, then enter the cooking time. When it's finished, the relay opens.

Sure, it will add to the cost of the device. But if the 15% is accurate for your household, the additional device cost will be made up in no time at all.

On that note.... So the device monitors power usage for devices that are supposedly off (as we all know, off doesn't necessarily mean off). This device will actually add to your power bill if you don't change behavior.

Maybe I already shut off lights, and am generally power conscious. I must consume more power to determine how much power I'm consuming.

Why don't I just put an electricity meter on each circuit in my house and take notes at regular intervals?

But, then again, this device is so much cooler because it's an OLED touchscreen.

Depends on what you consider cheap.... Are you talking about dollars flying out of your wallet? It seems to me that if you go with the other solutions, fewer dollars will fly much more often.

    Lets just say:
Standard SSD sustains 3,000 cycles and costs $100
Anobit SSD sustains 50,000 cycles and costs $500

With the same usage, you will have gone through 16+ standard SSD drives before your Anobit SSD fails. So for 5 times the cost, you get 16 times the usage.

If we break that down to cost per write cycle, the value becomes clearer.

    $100 / 3000 cycles = $0.03 per write cycle
    $500 / 50000 cycles = $0.01 per write cycle

If the Anobit device is the same price as the other solutions:
    $100 / 50000 cycles = $0.002 per write cycle

At 5 times the cost, longevity makes the Anobit a better value.

The price would have to be $1500 before the value of the Anobit device reaches the cost per write cycle of the other solutions.....but it will still outlive 16+ of the other solutions.
