Sure the Ion drive is a really neat addition, but it's soooo slooooow. It's going to take them 15 MONTHS to get there! And the payload isn't really greater at all. It takes longer to get any large loads going. The US space program got people to the moon and back in what...2 weeks? It may be slightly more economical, but it just doesn't seem practical. Hopefully they can perfect the ion drive, however through this to increase the speed and payload capacity. Then we might have something really cool... (until the anti-matter reactor comes online...)
It's funny how Intel is saying that China would be creating "Proprietary" standards. Umm... how can they be proprietary if they're open source and built on linux? They won't be so "proprietary" if everyone can see their standards and work on interoperability... I would see this as more beneficial than locking themselves on closed proprietary systems. (albeit they are more widely used)
It's the latest trend in Mathematics! In reality he's got data worth about $.35, but when you extrapolate $200,000+ per infraction, he's on a goldmine! I propose they start teaching this in textbooks in elementary school! Then everyone will have access to this revolutionary idea!
Wow! IBM seems to really be doing well in a geek's eyes right now. They don't spy on employees...they are helping the Linux battle against SCO, not to mention helping further open source by contributing to Linux, eclipse, and others. Good job, IBM!
This sounds really great! I mean, just think, if the MPAA tells us that a movie doesn't suck and that we can't tell our friends that a movie sucks, all the movies in the future must be good, right? Or perhaps, they'll claim that texting is in violation of the "please turn of the cell phone" clauses in theaters. Hmm... sounds great to me!
Seems like a simple solution if you're really worried about this all. Drop back to Kernel 2.2 (or even 2.3) and they can't touch you. Problem solved. They won't win anyway, so I'm leaving all my boxen alone...
Also as previously mentioned, real-time interaction potentially with the teacher would be great! Have certain people in the class be mods so the teacher doesn't get tons of anonymous "you suck" messages. Also, it would be great to get WebEx or Netmeeting or something like that working with it too to provide interactive whiteboard/diagram support. Perhaps even interacting with Smart whiteboards like are installed at my University, perhaps the whiteboard could be input realtime to each of the laptop clients logged in. This would make it easier to see diagrams from longer distances, allow students to save the diagrams for studying later, and would also allow realtime feedback if a student had a question. (i.e., they could draw a circle around the trouble area momentarily.).
At first I thought it said "Microsoft wins homeland security CONTEST". My jaw hit the floor. Then I re-read it and realized nothing had changed. *whew*
Isn't this exactly what so many slashdot readers have been suggesting for years? Private funding and competition almost invariable leads to faster, greater results that can be achieved by the government. Sounds like a great plan to me!!
Why on earth would I care about DARPA projects? It's not like they've affectd my day-to-day life. I mean, why do people care about DARPA anyway? It's not like they built the internet or anything. Oh well. Maybe I'm just out of the loop.
It is true that they will become more widespread as they become less expensive, but for me, the large reason I will be reluctant to switch is performance. Until they can give electricity-based cars better performance, I'm going to opt for a gasoline engine until the goverment says I can't any longer. A fuel-cell driven car just isn't goint to have the power (at least not yet) as a good V8 muscle car. One of the largest losses experienced by fuel cells in automobiles though is the rumble. You can't get fuel cells to sound like a nice beefy engine. I just pray and hope that we won't see speakers installed to imitate engine noise! My goodness, that'd be just wrong!
It's good to see this kinda thing start to happen. I feel that space exploration is humanity's job as a whole. What a great way to promote all humanity contributing to the space exploration effort than by contributing source code. Granted, I know this doesn't mean it's all gonna be done open source-like, but hey, it's still cool and in a way, allows everyone to participate.
Okay, maybe it wasn't me, but when I was young, I thought it was more fun staying up all way until MIDNIGHT and then sleep in until 10:30 or 11:00, by which point, i'd missed the cartoons. The saturday morning cartoons were way to overrated in my opinion compared to sleep. Hmmmm... sleep... maybe that's why I'm 6'3".:) Another bonus is that since I slept so much when I was younger, I can get 4hrs. a night in college now to make up for my overages when I was young...yeah...that's why I don't get any sleep now... really!
Grad school is good. Until you realize you're done with grad school, like me! Originally, I figured the situation would improve over 2 years ago. Nope. Just got worse. It is a good piece of advice though. Education is NEVER a waste! ikeya
Looks beautiful! This will be nice. I really like Middle Earth. It's a fun environment. After reading some of the books, watching the movies, playing the Lord of the Rings TCG and that kind of stuff, I've really grown to love Tolkien's Middle Earth. This sounds neat that not only will you have more character classes, but actually have different races in an RPG with building of race-specific buildings and stuff. Kudos! ikeya
Remember that between Win 3.11 and Win 95, was NT 3.5 and so on, so it went. Win 3.11 NT 3.5 Win 95 - Aug 1995 NT 4.0 - July 1996 98 - June 1998 98SE - June 1999 2000 - March 2000 ME - December 2000 XP - December 2001 2003 - April 2003
2005 isn't all that far off. And that doesn't mean that they may not release another home version in there too.
I tried creating wealth with my scanner and ink-jet printer once, but the government didn't like that very much.

I mean, software patents work so great over here with no problems at all! They should just model their system after the U.S.!

12:05:44 - 1:31:34 PM - energy.gov publishes timeline
2:02:00 - 4:50 PM - Business as usual. Interested parties are viewing the published timeline.
04:58:00PM - Existence of timeline is revealed to slashdot.org
05:00:03PM - energy.gov? what's that?
I wonder if it's bad when we slashdot effect gov't sites...

Yeah, yeah... So it's good at doing work. That's boring.
What we really wanna know is how many FPS can we get in Quake?!
Just remember like the SPA said back in the 90's
"Don't copy that floppy!"
I still shudder at that terrible music video thingy....

Hmm... DVDs are 720x480, tv's are like 640x480....
Yeah. DVDs are at that for now, but will be going up soon, I'm sure. And a good HDTV has the full 1920x1080 resolution already.

Yes. They did have hifi genre streams before. I used to listen to them all day at work. :)
Quite a nice feature!
The new version is pretty similar to today's Netscape 7.1, which is based on the same code, but lacks Netscape's proprietary features.
Uhh... and it's a bad thing that Mozilla lacks these "features"? I personally like Mozilla with less crap. Oh well. To each their own...

We could have "Light at the speed of e-Business at the speed of light!"
