"Time to replace that '92 Mustang you're driving too. Or was it a '68 Camaro, or a '65 Corvette, etc."
Soo... taking Windows XP (it's what, 10 years old? Last sold 2 years ago?) and comparing it to 45 year old cars is... what.. NotStrawMan?
"Once a networked computer can't get secure applications or security patches for the OS, it's life on the net gets very short."
Not really, not if your Enthusiastic Enough about it, there's options, 3rd party or even, let's say "After Market" options you can install - firewalls etc. There's no reason why it cant exist in a limited quantity. Same as a 69 Camaro. Sure you can install after market, but I don't expect Chev or Ford to sell me airbags (about as close as you can get to a security feature in a car) because it doesn't make any financial sense for them to do so.
Windows XP is now two version of their OS old, and has been out for years and years. They stopped selling it, as you said, 2 years ago. Move on already. Yesh..
What part of my argument is illogicial or extreme? Let's not degenerate this thread into baseless acusations.. please elaborate what you mean.
Yes, you can drive an old car on the road (or use old software), but don't expect the manufacturer to patch "security" vulnerabilities (like, say, airbags in a '69 Camaro)
You are saying that because we drive '68 car's on the road, the industry should be keeping patched "older products work just fine". Sure you said common, but you also use cars made in the 60s as your argument, those are NOT common out there, as much as I would like otherwise..
If my parents can get by with Windows 95, does that count? What about someone running DOS (I know a company that does).. should MS be patching security vulnerabilities in it? I bet it wouldn't be hard to find a Win95 box, or even Windows 2000 (last touched a production W2K box a couple weeks ago).
Weak analogy.. does that mean that we should be patching hardware and software written in '68? or '65?
No.. because technology of computers moves a LOT faster then technology of cars. Should Microsoft still be releasing patches for Windows 95? Bob? DOS 6.22?!?
If you want to drive a Model T, I imagine it's still legal on most roads, but don't expect Ford to be responsible to install the seat belts and airbags and all the other safety features that have happened in the last 80 years or so. Same with Windows XP.. want to run it? Go ahead, but it's not Microsoft's (or Apple's or whoever's) problem that it doesn't support hardware X or software Y.
You honestly think that the leaders of North Korea don't have access to world information?
"Could you perhaps elaborate on what part of my statement is garbage and "educate" me."
How about you educate yourself.. why take MY word for it? Travel, see the world, see what the other side is like, then tell me how much better it is. Maybe your problem is that you let others educate you instead of doing the work yourself.
"You see that's the problem with the west. Some people can't just accept that other countries are just..different. Why can't you just accept others as they are?"
Your right.. Nazi Germany was just.. Different. Stalin's Soviet Union was just... Different.
"And where exactly do you base your opinion on North Korea? On the news? The news that said there are nukes in Iraq and that terrorists are hiding in Afghanistan? ROFL."
Actually I base it off a variety of news sources, including those that NEVER said there was nukes in Iraq (not sure what Iraq has to do with this but whatever). I also base it off first hand accounts and video documentaries, including groups that operate inside China (safe from the US Media your so scared of)
"To take things even further? What makes you think that western democracy is better than totalitarian communism? You see what is happening in the west? Corporations control countries and CEO's get rich while poor people are being thrown out of their homes. I bet in North Korea everybody gets a home to live in. But then again I'm only guessing."
So your only guessing, but you feel your uneducated guess is a valid coutner point? Yes everyone gets a place to live in work camps that can span generations, why don't we join them in that ideal society?
"To sum it up, we (the west) have no right to judge them since we are no better than them. Perhaps even worse. At least they oppress their own people whereas we oppress other countries!"
Do yourself (and everyone else) a favor and educate yourself before spouting such garbage. Maybe do some travel, I seriously doubt you've been to any of these countries you've mentioned that are just as good if not better then the US or Canada. Stop insulting the people living in North Korea by saying they have it as good as we do. Go travel or hell, go live in North Korea for a few years, experience their "Utopian Society".
With all the talk about NoScript like functionality being in Chrome, when I reformated my system I decided to make the switch to Chrome. However after searching the internet for about an hour the best I came up with is either it doesn't actually work (still executes JavaScript just hides it) or is a cludge at best.
Been running FF4 ever since, it's fast and does everything i want. I guess I'll switch to Chrome when they give me a reason, being almost as good isn't a reason.
If someone can prove me wrong on the NoScript I'd be willing to give it a go again.
Then get one with a keyboard... not sure what the issue is here. This isn't iPhone where there's only the Nexus S to choose from, there's at least several with slide out keyboards.
Now if your PROVIDER doesn't offer one, then that's your Providers fault, not Google.
As someone that doesn't mind not having a hardware keyboard, I rather like being able to choose keyboard or no keyboard. Just because the Nexus S doesn't have it, doesn't mean they all don't.
Sooo by having a threat level ALWAYS IN THE SAME COLOR is magically keeping the baddies away? How exactlly did the current threat level stop any of the attempts we know about? After the incident last year around Christmas I believe it went up, but it was AFTER the fact.
The color system in theory may have worked if it was used properly, but it wasn't. As the summary said, keeping it at the same threat level for 4 years is a joke. If I hear that we're at orange alert that should MEAN something.
I had to google this BSG: Blood and Chrome.. I got out of BSG sometime in the 2nd season, and reading about Caprica reinforced that I made the right choice. However this Blood and Chrome thing.. this looks sweet. I hadn't heard of it before thanks!
You'd be mistaken, since a lot of people have the view of the poster I was refering to. Basically that our power system is just so damn awesome nothing seriously bad could ever happen.
An example, where I live there's about a million people in the city, with outlying communities. It can get -40C in the winter. I live in 19 story building, so to have a wood burning stove doesn't really make a lot of sense in an apartment complex of that scale. Nor does a diseal generator, and if it did, where would a million people get diseal? How long would that be sustainable?
Also around here, cars stored outside are plugged in with a block heater to ensure they start when it's -40C. A lot of people would have dead cars that couldn't go anywhere, and where would we go even if all our cars would start? A mass exodus on the highways would be reaaaaaaaaaaaaaal fun. The American border is a good 10 hour drive for me, and warm weather even further then that in January.
Flip side, if it's scorching hot, and people don't have AC, you'd see a lot of the elderly and weak having a tough time surviving.
Most western societies have a VERY large dependence on power. Most people would be completely clueless as to what to do.
I know it's cool and all to say how tired of hearing about this, but your view doesn't in any way have an impact on reality. We support communities who only have a sat link as their means of communication. Yearly we have communication problems due to sun transit, often for hours. There's nothing we can do but wait until it sorts itself out. Although I imagine (IANAS) we're talking about two slightly different things, I see no reason why a massive solar flare couldn't do a ton of more damage.
By the way, power is used for a lot more then your XBox. I'm assuming you live somewhere where it doesn't get below zero much eh? Try living without power for a week in sub zero temperatures.
"Why do you think people are suing HTC and other Android phone makers instead of Google"
Well in this case, the "people" that are suing HTC are (at least partly) Microsoft, which is an interesting coincidence. It's almost like Microsoft is saying "see? If you let us watch your back, we got you covered. But if you go over there *smashes windows* well.. that might get unpleasent"
Pay us money and don't use the competition or we'll sue you. Naw that would probably be illegal, so it really must be just be a coincidence..............
Hmm trying to remember what server software I use, I was fairly confident it was courier, although may have changed it a year or so ago. Regardless it works fine for me on the default email program, using 2.1 or 2.2.. sure you got your ports forwarded past the router?
For a lot of people, that's the way they work. Multiple cores don't give you multitasking. (That's an OS design choice.)
When did I state Multi-core CPU's are a requirement to multitasking? I'm simply stating I didn't buy a big fancy system so I can only have my web browser open OR my game...
Back to the issue you raised, then: is a modal interface better for people who use applications modally? Bear in mind humans aren't that great at multitasking...
That's great and all that for you, and others, have no desire to view more then one window at a time. However, I rather LIKE the option, as it currently is, to have a maximize and restore button for the window. Currently on my setup I have 5 windows in view, where I can quickly glance to see if there's any update in my email / im / whatever. Somehow I haven't managed to melt my brain by doing this...
Note I know SJ didn't say that this is the only way to run applications, however I don't like the precidence being set. I also don't consider these things features, as much as setbacks. Seriously, Modal as a feature? I've ran Modal apps in Windows 3.11. Full screen apps in DOS. Big whoop.
Uh, what? Way to take my comment out of context. Is the Windows Live Marketplace known as a walled garden with draconian and arbitrary rules? Is Microsoft announcing their taking elements of the XBox interface, and making Windows easier to use with a Controller? If so, you'd have merit. As it stands... not so much. Apple announced a lot more then a new way to download software. In fact, the App store isn't even a 10.7 feature, you can get it with Snow Leopard once it's released.
Cross platform in a "features will never match the version that Windows has". I'm also curious where on Microsofts track record we have ANY indication that support for non Microsoft OS's will improve?
Amazing, yet flawed, game. Me and a bud played it for hours and hours and hours, and on newer OS's tweaked it to try and make it playable. Haven't played it in years but I have many fond memories.
Cloaking was way too overpowered tho, yet at the same time was the only decent way to fight off the borg. Still, was cool when you were playing and suddenly a race would just... disappear. Then.. another.. then.. what's that cube shaped thing over my planet?
BOTF2 would be a first day must buy IMO. Sadly I'm pretty sure it'll never happen:(
Just picked up two BR's for $20 TOTAL. Granted they weren't triple A releases, but really, prices have gone down quite a bit. And players? Sure I don't think you can get one for $50, but they're definitely not what I call outrageous pricing.
I don't think your argument is nearly as true as it was 2 years ago.
"Time to replace that '92 Mustang you're driving too. Or was it a '68 Camaro, or a '65 Corvette, etc."

Huh? I'm forced to run IE8 at work.. and we have Google as the search engine default...
Go Tools, Internet Options, then click Settings under "Search"... can change it in there.
With all the talk about NoScript like functionality being in Chrome, when I reformated my system I decided to make the switch to Chrome. Yes, it's completely optional. It'll probably always be optional too, just like you still have an option to run DOS on a 386.
I don't think anybody is saying that this is mandatory TODAY, the issue is down the road.. Will the successor to OS X be iOS 5.0 or some such?
I did get a laugh at one site saying basically the future of apps is Modal. I'm so glad I'm running a multi core CPU so I can run one app at a time...
