To a point I agree, but remember at one point 4.7G was freaking huge. Also, when was the last time you saw a DVD Ripped to a size of 4.7? Chances are your looking at file sizes at (the still huge) size of 10G, or even less. Right now not much point, but eventually all things come down in price...
Please... many MANY people were told to stay away from Vista, so it's a fact of life that a LARGE install base of Windows XP still exists, heck many enterprise organizations still run XP (such as mine), XP still exists - what you want has no bearing on this. So basically are you saying that I should be telling my friends and family to buy new computers that can run Windows 7? That's as ignorant as telling them I only support Linux systems. My goal is not to be an OS evangalist, but to actually provide the service they want. If everyone ran Linux instead of Windows I'd still be cleaning up their damn computers. My point was Windows isn't a magic bullet solution, and to make it appear as such (And to say Linux has no place on the desktop) is ignorant.
MythTV and Tuners, ya total PITA. Note tho I never mentioned Tuners. If I seriously wanted to get into THAT, I would likely go Windows 7 Media Center. I find XBMC with DVD's I've ripped far easier to use then hunting in my shelves for what I want to watch tonight. However I think computer based tuner solutions no matter the OS are too much work either way.
Your vision of Linux is rather laughable, and reminds me of Linux fanboys that think of Windows as a Win95 box. Both OS's have progressed passed that point in history.
I just spent a week of evenings fixing up two Windows XP comptuers because they were completely unusable. Windows isn't some holy "it just works" operating system.
Another example, my mom is now running Ubuntu, at least temporarily. When I setup her computer I set it up with Dual Boot capabilities in case something happened to her Windows. Well it started slowing to a crawl, and I couldn't figure out why. I ran out of time to diagnose, so she's setup in Ubuntu and is doing what she did before just fine. I showed her how to get back into Windows if there's something she needs, and watched her do it to make sure how, but so far she hasn't felt the need.
Another example is XBMC's Live CD, where I was able to get a fully functional Media Center PC by simply putting in a CD, everything just worked. Now install Windows 7 and their Media Center offering. It'll work, and it'll work great, but I'll already be done watching a couple episodes by then in XBMC.
No, I don't go around installing Linux for my friends and family, Windows has real advantages over Linux (and vice versa). but to dismiss it without a second thought is doing yourself a diservice.
Not sure I agree with that statement. I've semi-recently gotten my feet wet in OpenGL, and calling it outdated is a bit of a stretch. My understanding is that yes there was a time when DirectX was far superior to OpenGL for 3D Graphics (just as before that OpenGL was superior to DirectX). However OpenGL has pretty much caught up with if not passed it in some ways, and with Microsoft showing some weak support for gaming on the PC (Games for Windows Live case and point) it's fully possible to see OpenGL pull ahead again, at least for a time.
Not only that but I find DirectX to be rather.. limiting. Sure, DirectX is "cross platform" just as you can have the Model-T in any color, as long as it's black. OpenGL experience I find is far more interesting if I want to branch out into Android, Windows, OSX, etc etc. About the only thing I imagine I can't use my OpenGL experience with on developing is the XBox, or possibly Windows Mobile 7.
To me developing for DirectX is like 5 years ago developing for IE6.. a potentially bad idea for the long term.
Funny.. my sole experience with GFWL is quite similar. There was 5 of us sitting at a LAN party. All on the same switch, same network. Three people could connect to each other but not see the other two (yes i know the 4 player limitation, we were trying to troubleshoot the issue). The other two could see each other, but not the first three.
Wait a few hours, and it would basically shuffle who could see each other, but never was there a point where four people could connect with each other. Ya we turned off all firewalls etc.
I don't understand how Microsoft could make this apparently awesome online service with their 360 (I dont own an XBox), but f* up this big for the PC.
To me censoring is the government hiding information from the people. Filtering is the news media deciding what sells ratings and what doesn't. One indicates the government controls the media, the other indicates money controls the media.
Are you SURE it's censored? Here's the test I usually use to figure it out:
Am I able to find anything on TV that says bad things about the country or it's leader? If yes, not censored, just as the other post said filtered to better sell ratings. Big difference in my opinion.
For example I can turn on the TV and tune into a US station and find several channels / shows that say bad things about Obama and/or his policies. Countries such as Russia, as has been reported to me, do not have such a thing about Putin, at least not on any of the major news outlets.
As always facts to the contrary to what I said are appreciated. Last I heard reporting on something boneheaded that the Russian government has done is a good way to disappear.
Steam's not quite as big brother as your putting it out to be.. a counter example is Dawn of War 2. Picked it up on the weekend at a LAN Party, bought it directly off steam. However it's technically a Games for Windows Live game, so playing multiplayer i had to actually make a Live account. Invites to join the game went through GfW (well, that was the plan, thanks to GfW sucking so bad we never did get a game going)
Thought it a bit odd that I could open up the Steam interface while having the Games for Windows Live fugly interface open, too.
How many years did it take between the release of the NES and the release of a full speed NES Emulator? And your saying that because right now, and probably not next year either, we can't emulate the 360, emulation is dead?
Got a long ways to go before calling this one. In fact in some ways emulating the 360 on a PC might be even easier, there's a lot more similar between a modern PC and a 360 vs a PC and the NES.
Give it time. if you think we've peaked our CPU output I think your in for a suprise.
Well, as someone who wants to dabble in gaming and doesn't want to be tied to a single (Windows) platform, OpenGL is still highly relevant I think. Code I use runs equally well on OSX, Linux, and Windows.. DirectX on the other hand, while technically multiplatform as well (XBox, Windows variants), isn't nearly as much as OpenGL. I next want to start looking at Android as a platform, and although I don't expect it to be as smooth as going OSX to Windows, should be easier then going from DirectX.
Seriously? Scribd was essentially providing a service saving the author money, and that's grounds for a LAWSUIT? So to ensure that they have nothing illegal on their servers Scribd (and others) should be bound to purchase a copy of EVERY BOOK?!?
Side A: You are bound by law to prevent that from being copied. Side B: What is "that"? Side A: Give us money and we'll allow you to know what your bound by law to prevent doing.
IANAL but that smells of extortion to me.
By the way I think your argument using cars should win an award... but not in a good way.
"30 seconds just before entering a game would be fine. obviously not interrupting the game."
Obvious to you and me yes.. obvious to the Bobby Kotick's of the world? Ya not so much.
*Door opens, unveiling the final boss of the game, switch to view of the player, weapon at the ready, charging in ready to start the fight...* "We'll return after this brief commercial announcement from Tampax!"
Gonna have to check out your game once I get home (you guys made it on our Block List at work,:[ ), not often you see a developer post directly here and tie in a bit of humor. Plus you actually seem to care. I have no interest in OnLive (and I'm in Canada, so it doesn't matter if I do or not it'll probably be years before it reaches us if ever) but I do like to support developers that give a damn!
Well actually if you go into some of the expanded universe stuff in the books.. from what i remember (and this is going way back) the way they explained how the Rebels were able to take a trap in RotJ and basically demolish the empire's forces was due to the death of the emperor.. he had the ability to basically boost the abilities of his troops from great distances. once he died they were uncoordinated (nice way of explaining a weaker plot element of the movie anyways) and the Rebels took advantage of this from them.
I think the Jedi chick you try and protect in the first KOTOR had a similar ability. Basically my understanding is Jedi's could go all "Super-Sayen" (ugh.. I hate DBZ) on you, but not all had the same powers.
From how I read it it's actually 5x a month.. I could be wrong tho. Ahich actually I might be ok with it's not something I use often, but handy when needed. You can also buy an extra 5 for 99 cents. Still prefer this over Shazam even if not free.
Using your logic, I suppose when unmanned vehicles (such as some failed mars lander attempts) crash and burn, that proves we should not have robots in space?
Well.. I'm on the same network as the GP (ok FIdo, but it's essentially Rogers for this discussion) and I use the bluetooth wireless option as well.. no cable required, can leave the phone in my pocket in fact when i fire my laptop up at a cafe. It's not a WAP (jailbreak apps do exist for that) but the iPhone is capable. The cable would probably result in a bit faster connection compared to BT.
with that said i can't wait to drop the iPhone 3G for a decent Android in a year or so...
Further to my post.. http://mediatomb.cc/ That's what I use.. it's not very user friendly but very customizable.. I have it (almost) setup exactlly how I want it, and doesn't require much
Playstation Media Server is what I recommend when people want something that just works, and the media server is a Windows Box (also runs OSX and Linux I believe). Seems pretty sweet honestly, but haven't tried it myself. http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/ or http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/

A Honda Civic sells far, FAR, FAR more then a Corvette ever will. But if we're talking about pure car performance, which wins?
Insightful? I know we seem rather big and important to you.. but honestly, we're not (on universe or "anywhere") type scale. Assuming for a moment that other life forms even exist out there, and assuming that there are some at various stages of development, you REALLY TRULY can not think of anything worse then Humans?
I don't think we're as special.. either in a good way or a bad way.. as you think we are.

Not troll, just, at least partially, wrong.

Bravo.. that is one of the better comments I've read on Slashdot.. rarely do you see someone debate as well on here.
Of course taking any side strongly your going to get a lot of feedback trying to discredit, but I appreciated reading your comments.
