The downside is that since VIA don't make motherboards, they rely on mobo manufacturers, and the mobo makers don't want to piss off Intel, and so aren't too quick to look at using unauthorized chipsets.

If no one makes the boards, the chipset may end up more or less stillborn.

If VIA had started with an Athlon chipset, or didn't have this disagreement with Intel over whether or not they're allowed to make P4 chipsets, then there wouldn't be that problem.

However, I would assume that there are obviously some manufacturers making VIA boards, so I would assume those ones would be the ones that would start making boards using this technology.

Where ogg really wins out, is at q0 - q3, the oggs will be quite acceptable (especially on crappy speakers), and an mp3 with the same file size will have the horrible hollow metalic sound to it that you get from low bitrate mp3s.

I did some comparisons with lame and bladeenc, and oggenc, and found that ogg at q2 was pretty much indistinguishable from the original wav. There was maybe a slight difference in overall sound, but not noticable unless you compared pretty closesly to the original. And there were definely no artifacts in the .ogg that weren't alredy in the original recording.
The mp3s however, had the awful metalic sound, and very noticeable tendancy to mush the high end sounds.... 'S's at the end of words became 'Shhh' and cymbals sounded bad, and drums lost their crispness severly.

Naturally you're not going to want to use q2 for archival quality sound, but then it's the low bitrate quality that matters on portable audio players anyway.

Reverb added to music is controlled, the technician can add more or less, or change the type to make it sound how they like, and match it to the style of music.

Echoes in a concert hall don't work that way....and unless it's been designed extremely well, (which is usualy the case in the good ones) then the echoes will pretty much suck. And even in the quality ones, echoes that sound good with chamber music, probably suck for metal, so the best situation for a general purpose concert venue, is one where there's little or no reverb or echoes from the environment (audiences usualy go a long way to absorbing the reverb anyway), and then have the right effect for the type of music added by the sound guys.

From what I can tell, the only thing they had over things like Ogg Vorbis, and even MP3 is that they were there before those formats were as popular (or even existed in the case of vorbis).
Their main competitor was Real, but Real were interested in low bitrate streaming, and Liquid were interested in digital distribution of high quality music.

Then along came MP3, and people got free (if not necesarily legal) distribution of acceptable quality music, and so Liquid became irrelevant.

Real survives because there's still a market for live streaming audio technology.
