    Shutting down KDE doesn't stop sshd, apache, oracle, ftpd, nfsd, or any other server from functioning. So an update to Konqueror could be done with 0 down time....

    Though why you'd be using Konqueror on a critical server machine (where 0 down time was important) enough that you'd need to be updating it is another thing entirely....

    So viruses start coming in executables inside .zip files.

    All this does is avoid the problem, and impose a counter productive inconvenience on your users.

    Here in Australia (and in NZ too) we use 10^9 for billion. It fits better into the S.I. system that way...

    I keep hearing this, but I haven't had any issues on the couple of machines I've installed it on....
    how did it kill the boxes?, what were the symptoms? Is it only W2k server that's a problem, or does it affect Pro as well?

    I'm interested to know, because I have avoided putting it on any important machines so far...

    There are actually some things that can make applications behave better with different window managers.

    The window manager may require that an application set certain hints on it's windows so that it knows how to do the right thing, like leave off or use small decorations, etc.

    I'm not sure I'd call any of Douglas Adams' books utopian....funny yes, but the way the were funny, was by illustrating all that is wrong with Life, the Universe and Everything

    I would hardly call a universe in which a planet is destroyed to make way for an interstellar bypass, with the occupants being told that they had a chance to view the plans in another galaxy somewhere, as Utopia.

    DVDs in Australia usualy go for $AU35+
    There are places you can get them for less, but that's the standard retail price.

    Depending on the exchange rate, that's probably fairly close to $US20, but I think that comparitive affordability between the two countries is much closer to $AU = $1US than the exchange rate (usualy around $1AU = $US0.55), so the idea that they'd make them cheaper in places than can afford them less doesn't seem to fit here.

    If a P4 ever has to run at half speed, then it's an indication that something is seriously wrong.
    The potential for the clock to run at half speen should never be taken in to consideration when determining the performance of the CPU.

    You don't expect to set a world speed record in a car with the oil temperature warning light on do you? (Or at least, you don't expect to have a working car afterwards)

    I know exactly what you mean....

    However, I was lucky, my GF didn't want a big chunky diamond...she's not much of a jewlery wearer, and she was afraid she'd keep injuring herself, or catcking it on things...she also didn't like yellow gold.
    So when I came across a white gold ring with 9 channel set diamonds (albiet, very little diamonds), for $650 I knew I'd found exactly the right one.
    And it was :)

    admittedly, it's intended to be used the other way round, but the functionality is still there...

    Take a look at the cost of CALs for Windows 2000 server, and the cost of MS Office, and then you'll understand.

    Whilst 99% might be an exageration, it's still a very large percentage.

    That used to be the case with Win95 and 98 at least in comparison to RedHat Linux (I don't have any Hurd experience).

    But Microsoft have finaly caught up, and their installation is pretty bloody simple in 2000 and XP.

    I can remeber the nightmare of trying to install 95 or 98 on a new machine, and being amazed at how painful it was compared with the 15 - 30 minute, mostly hands off experience of installing RedHat.

    We have a DVD-R drive at work, and it has never been used to record movies. But it gets used every day.

    I'd say that any media capable of holding 4.7GB has pratical use.

    No, single speed on DVD is much faster than CD, due to the fact that the data is packed denser on the disk.

    I don't know for sure, but I'd guess that it'd take the same time to write an entire DVD at 1x as it does to write a CD at 1x (which is still fairly long, but at least it's writing a hell of a lot more...)

    That's not what that says at all...not even close.

    All that passage means, is that if you tell everyone your password, and someone else uses that to login as you, then it's not Microsoft's fault.

    Which is fair enough.

    By saying that 'you' are 'responsible' for maintaing the confidentiality, they are saying that no one else is going to do it for you.

    If it said you are 'required' to maintain the confidentiality, THEN it would be more like you said.

    However, I haven't read the rest of the terms of use, so I don't know that there isn't a passage like that. But the example above definitely isn't one.

    or Solaris, or BSD, or Tru64, or AIX, or any other operating system that implements popen().

    And Windows NT based operating systems have a related technology called Named Pipes, which work a bit more like local sockets, but can still be used to achieve the same goal.
