We're dealing with Peak Oil right now. Global oil production has been on a plateau for almost 7 years. Global net oil exports have declined every year since 2005. The share available to the OECD has declined dramatically in that time due to the rise of China and India.
Unfortunately the way we're dealing with it is through denial, steadily increasing unemployment, and massive financial crises. And oil production hasn't even dropped off the plateau yet.
No, I'm in favor of moving to higher ground. There is no way we're not going off this cliff. Fossil fuels are just too cheap for the world to stop using until they run out.
I commute about 55 minutes each way. About 20 minutes is walking, and the rest on the train. It's a bit of exercise and I can read on the train (and while walking for that matter, when it's not dark and/or raining). I'm not crazy about the amount of time it eats up, but it's not horrible, and certainly not unhealthy.
treat them with respect and kindness as you are being served
My restaurant servers almost never try to grope my genitals. And they have never forced my 90 year old grandmother to take off her adult diaper in order to be served.
newsflash: everyone dies. And, while I definitely do not look forward to it, I recognise there are really really bad ways to die, and there are less bad ways to die. When the time comes, I would prefer one of the latter.
It means their nannycam-monitored state isn't any different from yours.
Just in the last week the state of Indiana declared that there is never a valid reason to deny police entry to your home. And the federal government threatened to close down all Texas airports and block air traffic from the state if they enact a bill to punish TSA goons when they sexually molest travellers.
Because prosecutors choose who to prosecute. And cops are above the law, unless they get caught on film beating someone up without cause. And even then, they usually get away with it.
Not legally, but in reality. Welcome to the future. And it's not just the US, we have the same problem in Canada.
If you include Medicare it's pretty close. The point that you will have to cut "non-discretionary" spending and/or defense to balance the budget is certainly accurate.
Why? Canadians call you Americans.
Baseload means it has to work when it's dark outside and the wind isn't blowing.

An ammonia fuel cycle could be constructed along those lines. Liquid fuels do have a lot of advantages over batteries for now.

It also hasn't done anything to slow carbon emissions. Which makes it useless.
Word and Word clones suck. There used to be better options. Wordperfect, before Windows, was awesome.
We need banks. We don't need THESE banks.
Yes ... they can. Because they don't have to pay themselves licence fees. And they have the source.
The point, however, is that no one else can.

PostgreSQL has been faster than MySQL or at least comparably fast in any realistic use case for years. Try again.
No one in their right mind accepts email from EC2. Linode or something similar with static IPs and real reverse DNS is a must.
^ this. x10 if you're not based in the US.

Fuck the TSA.

I'm pretty sure the Japanese soldiers were wearing uniforms.
Wouldn't it be nice if we could undo some of THAT damage with this event.
The companies that make the machines to take pictures of you naked are making FAR too much money to let that happen.

If you can't enforce a law you shouldn't make it. Being able to disregard particular laws leads to disrespect for the law and general lawlessness.
Just tell them their descendents can still have hope.
Software engineers in Canada are not allowed to call themselves "engineers". Engineer is a title legally reserved for actual engineers.
The Mongols did for China too. The West should probably be raising statues to Genghis Khan, he gave us our 500 years of being on top.
It does. Mostly because they make it impossible. Can't spend money on doing the impossible.
