this is especially useful for home users.

Considering that these are people who get lost when a desktop shortcut vanishes - "who deleted solitaire?"

They dont have to think about where files get saved to anymore - they dont even have to think about what app they used to create it - the desktop tools find it for them and all they do is click the web link.

I also use Google desktop search (and Lookout), but google will be far better when they allow us to choose our own file extensions to search.

  3. I wonder how much of these Blogs are actually read on Blog reading up 58% in U.S. · · Score: 2, Insightful

These days when searching for stuff you get a huge percentage of blog entries as opposed to legitimate* information. Not saying that blogs are bad, it's just that for a pure text based search it really raises the signal to noise ratio.

Say something like video card doom3 - gets 600k hits, whereas
video card doom3 -forums gets 333k

Blogs are useful, but I'll be glad when google separates them from the normal search results.

  4. My first computing exeriance was cardboard on Introducing Children to Computers? · · Score: 1

    Not kidding either.
In year 9 I got into the schools first 'computing' subject. Our teacher Mr Parker gave us a large picture of a computer on a cardboard printout (someone actually sold these things!) and we spent a couple of lessons going through it. Even though he made us press the 'on' picture, each time we used it I knew it would be cool when we got to play with the real thing.

After that it was BASIC programming on punched cards (posted out to Angle Park) - get your list of errors the next week and debug.

By the end of the term I and a couple of others were privelaged enough to be allowed to type in basic programs from a magazine into the schools one compter (an osborne I think).

I still think my kids dont believe me when I tell them this though :)

Walmarts great 'do as we say - sell for the price we say - dont be late - fuck you in general' policy may just be a little too oppresive after all.

It would be good if the suppliers could get a little more power back because of this.

hey, this was a joke (ok - a bad one)

The point is that information is not always shared in the way we think it will be shared - whenever there is a human contact in the process, then there is the chance that your details will be made public. It might a postman, your ex-wife, a workmate, etc.

You never really know when your details are made available to the spammers, but more often than not it is a 'harmless' passing on of details, that does the damage.

My postman is such a putz - ever since I subscribed to the 'slashdot postal catalogue', he has [rather cunningly] worked out that I read slashdot.

Now, since that my address is 1 Aardvark Avenue, Australia; I am the first person that gets his mail delivered off the truck.

So just as I go out the door on my way to work, he drives up - delivers my mail (very dramatically) and yells "FIRST POST" ... then he drives off laughing like an idiot - it is very annoying and I would like it to stop - can anyone give me some advice?

Now this is how it is supposed to be done. Make them pay monetarily.

It has always puzzled me that crimes where the criminals make lots of profit, somehow get to keep that profit when they get caught and go to jail.

Surely a better deterent would be - you lose *all* the gross money you made from this illegal venture PLUS 50% (or $25,000 - which ever is more).

But then IANAL although if there are any lawyers out there, I'd love to know the reasoning why this cannot happen.

That's right - there is stuff all difference. People use phones (rudely sometimes), but so what! If they are a loud, rude person then they will be loud and rude no matter what technology you limit them to.
I hardly ever use my mobile, but on a plane I imagine it would be really useful (Hi Honey - I'll be in late, or booking rooms or whatever)
