While I agree that it's good to support non-govt efforts like the Internet Storm Center, you'd have to be out of your mind to think that tax dollars are 'wasted' on things like CERT.
I believe that it is essential to have at least one team controlled by the government giving security reports. Sure they can fuck everyone over in hundreds of ways, but at least you can be sure that they will NOT 'hide' reports because it happens to be one of their products on the line.
In terms of cost - it must be microscopic compared to the billions that are spent on other things - and for that small price, you get a CORPORATE INDEPENDANT SECURITY REPORT - which is completely unbiased.
...unwittingly forcing programmers to code all the way around the block to get to the house next door, leaving problems in the wake
While I agree with you in principle and acknowledge that stupid managers are... stupid; I dont buy this theory - a programmer should know to say 'this wont work', or 'this *might* work in the demo to management, but it WILL FAIL IN PRODUCTION IF MORE THAN 'xxx' USERS ACCESS IT'
Fuck - isnt it time we stood up and just told the truth - or are we all too scared of being outsourced to India?
f a giant hand came from the heavens and said "Hi! I'm God!", we'd find out in a hurry where the distinction was, because only one of the two groups has any attachment to the opinion of atheism.:)
Wow - you just described most religions in a nutshell
Some people really believe and follow thier religion - but 95% of the people who go to 'church' are petty, gossipy small minded people who DO NOT follow any of the intentions of whatever 'book' they happen to 'pray to' - mostly it is a big social get together to bitch about other people.
Before you mod me down, observe your parents/grandparents when they at church and see what the topic of conversation is after the preacher finishes.
How many times does this shit have to happen before the Patent Office is called to account for itself.
There have been so many stupid patents in the last few years that I have lost count - patents which have OBVIOUS prior art and are EASILY disputed. Silly patents are becoming the norm, and yet there isnt much news on the dispute of them - perhaps there should be a very serious penalty to companies which patent obvoius things (like one click shopping, etc)
Hotmail has been a complete pain in the ass for sucdh a long time - people losing their accounts and info if they didnt log in within 30 days - what a crock. I'll be glad when Hotmail dies
Well, the price is complete bullshit, but I think its 'fairly' awesome.
Anything that gets rid of the problem of headphone wires breaking is good by me. Now dont start telling me about bluetooth - yes, thats cool, but it is fucking overkill to wirelessly transmit audio from your belt to your ears. At least this cuts out the middleman.
Then again, the price for the top of the line is always bullshit. When these things are $49.95 I'd be interested in getting one.
I think the current spate of phishing emails will help wipe out spam.
As more and more users lose their bank accounts, install viruses which hose their PC's and generally realise that the shit they get on email is pure shit, then they will start ignoring it.
The more its ignored, the less effective it'll become.
If you had asked me in 1999 if I would *pay* to read, say Slashdot for example I would have laughed my head off - but here I am in 2004 about to get my 2nd subscription.
It's funny how things turn out sometimes - who knows maybe we'll be paying a flat monthly fee to get all the ringtones, wallpapers and horrible colour schemes we want.
MOD PARENT UP - this first post is actually insightful for a change.
Come on - a US product is getting flamed for not knowing every fucking quirk of all other countries religeons, customs, languages, etc... I dont love MS by any stretch, but this is ridiculous - if you dont like it, dont fucking buy it.
I prefer a product doing one thing only and doing it well.
But often they dont even do one thing well (whether buggy hardware, shoddy software, badly designed bits of the interface), so I figure - hey if it isnt going to cost me any extra - pile on the features - give me the all in one entertainment system with bells and whistles to spare.
This way, you can be sure that at least *some* of the things work.
Well, I sure as hell will never buy a car or anything pricey with no publicity.
What about after sales support - replacement items. Ads are great to see
a) the relative popularity of items
b) the number of vendors stocking them (and the parts) locally
Oh, and I never said that I didn't use other methods to research it, but ads definitely play a part.
Yes, the only way this method would work is if the person was either frozen to 0 degrees kelvin before being scanned, or having some super scanner which gets every data point instantly.
Either way, its going to be a very neat feat when they eventually work it out - Beta testers anyone?
Several years ago I had my PC's setup in a shed. The shed was well setup with power and lights, and one day I was doing a motherboard transplant (swapping a 386dx40 with a 486dx2/66 from memory).
I didnt get it finished so i left both my desktop PC's with the covers off and went to bed.
That night there was rain (as usual) but it was also severely windy - enough to blow the rain at enough of an angle so it went under the eave section and straight onto my desk.
I got up in the morning and found both PCs and motherboards completely soaked and water pooled everywhere. Turned them upside down, dried them as best I could and left them (inside the house this time) for 2 days. When I powered them up they both worked, without a hitch and continued to work for years afterwards.
(one mouse was dead though - a small price to pay)
Hey - Great Idea!
:)
Let's take this a step furthur and:
- remove all radios from Company cars (its there to be driven, not for you to listen to your damn rap music!)
- remove lunch rooms (there's a cafe down the street asswipe)
- turn off Air Conditioning (what are you a pansy? - put a jumper on for fucks sake!)
Just think, with all these ideas the company could save a fortune.

Money very well spent IMHO

What if it lands in dogshit?
Is there a formula to work out the exact 'safe time' based on what food lands on when it falls?

these google links pop up a nasty image like tubgirl, which moves around the screen.
And this is with Mozilla 1.7.3 - I'm *sure* I had turned off most of the javascript stuff - are the preferences wiped when you upgrade?
grr..
Gmail rules!
Go Google!!

Hard to really tell how people will react.

yeh, you can understand game consoles doing it (market share), but it doesnt make sense for DVD player manufacturers to sell at a loss.
Point is, they probably dont - they just say they do and get kickbacks from somewhere.
I've found that too. Complete waste of time on a small screen - maybe good if i had a custom app to check my bank balances or something.
Dear Sir,
please refrain from using my patented word processing format.
Thank You

Oh, and I never said that I didn't use other methods to research it, but ads definitely play a part.
When I'm buying a car or appliance, I like seeing ads - I go through all the catalogs and magazines looking for them.
Although, I wouldnt it it as a sidebar on all the time, and I cant imagine internet ads being usefully targetted.
.. was Price mainly. That and the availability of lots of software [games] :)
... as far as the average user is concerned.
If someone thinks that they need this software 'blah', then they are going to install it, no matter what the 282 page EULA says.

I thought the idea was to make things healthier - not simulate diseases.
:)
And even though I didnt read the article, I thought I'd shoot my mouth off anyway
