  1. *sigh* on Ubisoft Working On a New Anti-Piracy Tool · · Score: 1

The two Ubisoft games I've played recently (Assassins Creed and Prince of Persia) were both beautiful to look at but incredibly repetitive and not all that fun to play after an hour or so. Since then, on more than one occasion I've seen an awesome trailer that made me think "damn I need to go get that game"...until the Ubisoft logo comes up and I think "nevermind...there are better things to spend my $60 on"...I imagine that has more to do with their sales lag than piracy does...it's not like piracy rates have suddenly shot through the roof.

    Meh...a couple points:
    • Even though the vast majority of users may never expose a defect, it doesn't render the defect "irrelevant"
    • There is a huge difference (in terms of user experience) between shutting down gracefully (with a nice message and cleaning up after yourself) and crashing all over the floor when running into an "unrecoverable error"
    • Encouraging sloppy coding practices (even if they are becoming "normal development practice"), especially in a large scale project with a (relatively) transient support group, is begging to run into serious problems in maintaining the code down the road

Personally, I think anyone who is even remotely serious about writing code should take (at the very least) a class on Software Engineering and spend some time learning about writing portable, easy to read, maintainable code with the mindset that you're probably not going to be the person fixing it when it breaks
