    It's not the same at all. Diesel trains don't use batteries to drive the train. They don't move under power unless being driven by their engines.

    When you scale down a diesel electric train system to automotive size, it sucks hind tit compared to other types of transmissions.

    He is measuring amps and calculating power as Amps x Watts. That doesn't work for a good share of electronics because of the high power factor. Actual power consumption in Watts is usually significantly lower than Amps x Volts on that type of equipment.

    The remaining biomass should be considered a feature rather than a bug. Most dried bio-mass has an energy content of about 4,000 BTU/lb, about the same as wood and roughly 1/2 that of coal.

    The problem is that they aren't clear what they mean. I interpret it to mean that they can produce enough photocells in a year to produce X megawatts peak power.

    I submit that it the more likely meaning because it would be a bigger number and make them look better, while still being a legitimate measure.

    A more meaningful number would be $/peak kW of raw DC output for a ready to use array.

    Joe 6-Pack is more likely to pay $20 for "brand" name software even if it is "Tesco" or "Safeway" than use free software made by a bunch of hippies (Joe 6-Pack's perception, not mine).

    Slapping some math on it from the other direction.

    It takes about 25 hp to move an econo car sized sedan down the road at 60 mph. 25 hp = 18.7 kW. Assuming 90% combined system efficiencey for the controller, motor and drivetrain (I'm being generous), that's a power requirement of 20.8 kW.

    At an average speed of 60 mph it will take 8.3 hours to go 500 miles.

    8.3 hr x 20.8 kW = 173 kWh. That falls within the estimates you generated with your methodology.
