I work for a small ISP which leases its copper from the LEC and we are doing just fine. Although we only deal with business customers and also provide VOIP service.
Sprint is the primary Internet connection for my laptop. You can run a webserver on a cellular card but only other sprint cellular users will be able to access it. Sprints cellular data network blocks port 80 inbound from other networks but not inside their own network.
Get a business account if you can. They are fairly lenient about hosting servers and using lots of bandwidth.
Ever drive in a massively populated area? Driving at a safe distance is nearly impossible. Try it and watch how many nuts nearly kill you as they swerve around and cut you off. Driving in NYC or probably any other major city is a good example of this. Its not smart to ride the bumper of the car directly in front of you but, it isn't always possible to drive one car length per 10 miles or whatever consensus is the appropriate distance.
Whats worse is people who stop dead in the road and side swipe you when you attempt to pass them. Also slow drivers in the fast lane and anyone who doesn't use a blinker. Included are people who drive way below the speed limit and refuse to allow the 10 cars behind them to pass. Some people drive way to slow for the road. This encourages tailgating. I say if your gonna drive slower than the posted limit than at least let everyone else pass. One does not have a right to drive slow and if you obviously aren't in a hurry then get out of the way.
It would be really great to be able to control flash better. Firefox and Seamonkey freak out if I don't have flash installed. When not installed, they both return errors after loading pages with flash.
For example, I load a page and then scroll down using my arrow keys. If the section of page with flash happens to scroll past my mouse cursor, the page freezes and I can no longer scroll. To continue, I have to move my mouse cursor out of the way. I have never figured out why this is the default behavior.
If I am forced to have flash installed for my web pages to work properly, at least give me the tools necessary to manage it. An option similar to the block all images on this page but for flash would be helpful.
Yes, I know I'm getting great software for free and otherwise it works very well, but it still strikes me as strange that Firefox and Seamonkey are dependent on a 3rd party proprietary plugin and they are both broken when it is not installed. I hope I'm not they only one that sees something wrong with this.
If cable isn't available you can always go with cellular as a backup. With the right setup you can see 300kbps down and the cell phone towers are more likely to survive power outages and disasters and the like.
The solution I personally favor is, don't use the public terminal. Of course stating that doesn't help with out proposing a solution.
I always use my own computer when abroad. Rather than messing with cables or finding open WiFi get your self a cellular connection card. I currently use Sprint but pick what works in your area.
Over the cellular connection use SSL/IPSEC/VPN or whatever to secure your transactions. The upside is not having to worry about software or hardware keyloggers at all. As an added bonus you can control where you sit and which way your screen faces to avoid shoulder surfing.
The downside is cost and network coverage. For a little more that 30 dollars a month Sprint offers a cell phone plan that includes unlimited data. The phone can then be tethered to a laptop and used as a modem. Data connection card plans are offered by major providers for 60 dollars a month.
Granted the monthly cost can make this solution somewhat unattractive but the flexibility is unparalleled. Unless you have absolutely no cell coverage in your area its possible to squeeze a few kB/s out of even the worst connections. Full EVDO speed is just as fast as low end DSL. I am not sure what type of connections libraries come equipped these days.
Also no more waiting for a computer to free up and no more cleaning the previous users mess off the keyboard.
I just wanted to point out that Alienware is Dell. I wonder do Emachines/Gateway/Acer or Lenovo come with crapware preinstalled? I never deal with home desktop support so I only know what I hear on Slashdot. Assuming they all preinstall that means the average home Vista user is dealing with a performance hit.
I don't shop at Walmart. I don't like their business practices so I choose to spend my money elsewhere. Maybe everyone doesn't have the luxury to avoid buying at the lowest common denominator.
Every time I walk into a Walmart it's full of wretched looking shoppers and employees that appear even worse. I would rather not spend my evening or weekend standing in line with my items waiting because Walmart can't be bothered to hire more cashiers. It isn't as if they cost much to employ. On average Walmart doesn't even pay health care for their employees.
It's really great that Linux based PC's are selling but after all the horrible experiences I have had at that place I'm not willing to recommend shopping there to anyone even if only online.

Seriously my laptop's CPU runs at 1.13 Ghz. Is that a PC type speed? My laptop also connects to the Internet with a EVDO rev A card. Can I say my laptop is running at cell phone type speeds? So what does PC type speed mean exactly? As a nerd I would rather they quantify this comment with a measurement rather than some marketing bullshit.
Do what I do, just recycle them anyway. If it's plastic or metal of any kind I put it in the recycling bin. I'll let my garbage company sort it out.

Supposedly Google has a lot of smart people employed that developed the voice recognition system from scratch. Once they get it out there and the public becomes aware of the technology maybe they plan to market it as a voice menu replacement. It appears to be much improved compared to the existing phone menu systems most other companies use. A friendlier phone menu system could cut down on costs and probably customer hostility as well. Companies will be all over this.
It's funny in the author of the forward who is apparently an apple fellow say's he gave up on unix and now uses a Mac. Anyway I wonder how the author feels about Plan9 http://plan9.bell-labs.com/plan9/.
Actually as of this month the new minimum wage in New York State is $7.15 per hour. I think this may affect upstate more than downstate. At least in downstate the base retail wage appears to be around $8 per hour anyway.
The hardware isn't proprietary. Try looking at a cash register next time you are in a store. They haven't ran proprietary hardware in at least over a decade. My company develops cash register software. Every cash register is an x86 based PC running windows XP. IBM, NCR and Fujitsu all sell cash registers. The POS software we sell is bloated.net crap. I wish there was an open source alternative. Namely something that ran linux that didn't break so damn often.
PS. Maybe we could hire some decent developers. I don't write the software I just support it.
I would have to say my top 5 games in no order are, Tetris Attack, Mario World, Dr. Mario (especially the 4 player version for 64), Starcraft and any Mario cart. Yeah I'm a Nintendo fan. I don't get the idea behind grinding away at some game by yourself. It's much more fun to play other people. Even more so if they are in the same room.
I'm going to hope they don't have the right to force people to enable encryption. I enjoy finding an open wireless network when I'm out and conversely I leave mine open to visitors.
What if I happen to be using an operating system that supports wireless but doesn't support encryption. Do any of the hobby OS's like Haiku or SkyOS support wireless without supporting encryption.
That would be crazy if he submits 400 articles a day. Assume it takes him 2 minutes to find and submit each article and that he doesn't submit the same article twice. Thats 400 times 2 minutes = 13.3 hours a day spent on sending articles the/. editors.
Well I don't know if anyone else has posted about this yet but, The D&B in the palisades center in Rockland NY has a dance dance revolution machine. I havn't seen anyone use the one they have but I'm usually spending my time at the bar.
