Actually their hardware division makes products that are as good as their software division's products are bad, and it isn't new.
Notice how in the hardware market, Microsoft has actual competitors. If they make shitty mice, no one buys their mice. If they make shitty software, a few Slashdot geeks post "m$ is teh suck lol" comments from their bsd systems while the other 99% of the population buys the shitty Microsoft software becuase of their monopoly power or their work requires it or whatever.
So in hardware, Microsoft is motivated to make good products, and they do. In software, they can get away with putting out crap, so they don't give a shit.
At first, I thought this was an article modification troll, but interestingly enough, it's actually number 28 on the list. Also, I didn't realize The Anarchist's Cookbook (#57) was a real book. I thought it was just something people passed around on the internet.
1. Remove the gas cap. 2. Move remainder of car off the driveway. 3. Attach a Toyota Prius or Civic Hybrid to the gas cap.
Seriously, it seems like it would be very difficult and expensive to make this work, and even if you did somehow succeed, most states would require you to get the car smogged or otherwise inspected, which could prove difficult after such extensive modifications. If you want an inexpensive hybrid, I suggest a 2001 or 2002 model Prius. They're cheap because everyone wants the 2004 model.

Interesting. I never knew you could set your display preferences to show the year (I wonder if anyone actually uses the "6 ish" format). I was using the days of the week to figure out what the year was. I gave up on the first three posts because I noticed the contradiction, and just assumed there was some bug in the Slashcode causing it to show the wrong day of the week. It didn't occur to me that the comment id's might be out of order.
If Slashdot was a site that advocated closed-source software instead of open-source software, that would make a great troll comment. Every bit as good as "17 Meg file" or "Mike Smith gives his reasons for abandoning FreeBSD" or "One more crippling bombshell."
Of course, Slashdot is Slashdot, not Windot, so this comment gets a +5 Informative instead of -1 Troll.
How long until the trolls figure out how to combine this with Last Measure (note to mods: link is to a site about Last Measure, not Last Measure itself)? Right now they're posting people's IP addresses and clipboard contents when they hit that site, but that's nothing compared to being able to take people's pictures and capture their reaction when they accidentally go to that site.
We're nowhere near the record. The Post of Death from January 2002 got 268 direct replies. More recently, the latest issue of Trollback lists this comment which got 63 direct replies. I'm sure there are many others.
As cool as it would be to fly from New York to Tokyo in 90 minutes, I wonder if anyone has thought about the security concerns related to passenger jets that can travel 10,000 mph. Often during events like the Super Bowl or political oonventions, they'll put up a no-fly zone around a 5 or 10 mile radius so the military has time to shoot down any threatening aircraft. Problem is, at 10k mph, you can cover 1,000 miles in just 6 minutes. Does this mean all air travel in the entire Northeast would need to be shut down during the Republican convention in NYC? What kind of a no-fly zone would be needed around Washington, DC?
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for advancing technology, I just wonder how we would be able to handle a world where a terrorist flying a stolen or hijacked aircraft over Chicago could be less than 5 minutes from the White House.
It will happen a lot sooner than that

Unfortunately, I couldn't tell what year the first three were posted, but from 4 million to 10 million, you can see the number of days it takes to post 1,000,000 comments:
4 million to 5 million: 153 days 5 million to 6 million: 138 days 6 million to 7 million: 121 days 7 million to 8 million: 120 days 8 million to 9 million: 102 days 9 million to 10 million: 112 days
First observation: Comment posting is slowing down on Slashdot!!! Slashdot is dying!!! Netcraft confirms it!!! OMGWTFBBQ!!!
(end troll mode)
Second observation: At the current rate of posting, it will take us 3 years to post 10 million more comments, or about 27 years to get to 100 million. So you can reschedule the celebration from 2525 to 2031, if not sooner.
Show Girls isn't listed. Neither are Termenator 3, Hairy Potter, Fahrenheit 4/51, Gay African-Americans from Outer Space, or Out Foxed. But Showgirls is listed.
If the earth's magnetic field is weakened, microwave radiation will get through to the surface of the earth and literally cook anything on the surface!
And of course, nuclear weapons will get the core spinning again, and said nuclear weapons must be delivered to the core by a manned vessel.
No more of a problem than already exists, what with people being able to buy put options on airline stocks and then hijack the airline's planes and fly them into skyscrapers. Or, to be less extreme and more ontopic, buy put options in GOOG and then launch a DDOS attack against the site. In fact, it's much less of a problem since the volume on these markets is so much less.
Some companies have "document retention" policies that require employees to delete email after a certain period of time. It's not to free up space on the servers, it's to make sure the stuff can't be subpoenaed. Many respected companies have policies like this. Many even have tools that make the email deletion automatic, and require management approval to disable the tool.
So maybe this story is really just focused on banning policies like this.
The article was right. They're all loss leaders. I think banks should start working on the honor system. If you want to make a withdrawal, you go into the vault, take out however much money you want, and then enter your withdrawal into a computer terminal sitting next to the vault. To make a deposit, put your money into the vault and enter your deposit into the same computer terminal. It would sure save a lot of money on teller salaries and ATM maintenance.
If individual artists controlled their own music, we wouldn't have anyone lobbying for insane copyright terms, because individuals eventually die, so there's no one to keep lobbying for more and more extensions. The problem with corporations is that they're immortal, so there's no end to the insanity. Believe me, if they get the term extended to 95 years, the Slashdot headline in July 2049 will be about how the Elvis recordings are about to enter the public domain, and the music industry is lobbying the government to extend the term to 150 years so they can keep making money. Every time I read about the RIAA or IFPI, I'm reminded that there are ETLAs far more annoying than GNAA.
This could lead to downloading mp3's before they have been recorded.. try to stop that RIAA bastards!
I'm going to download mp3s of all of next year's songs, copyright them myself, and release them into the public domain! Bwahaha! Take that, RIAA!

Too bad it only works underwater, or they could send it to Iraq to look for those weapons nobody seems to be able to find.
They knew about redundancy, but since they read Slashdot, they also know that Redundant is a -1 mod, and therefore redundancy is a bad thing.
It occurs slightly less often than IE is patched.

Too late. Someone already did, and they even gave it a name: bukkake.
