People on/., remember that is the target audiance we are talking about, would cry foul on MS.
Obviously it is not reasonable, but people here are not always reasonable, and they get mod'd -5 Reasonable, automatically, when MS is involved.
This is not about Mozilla distributing infected binaries. Mozilla did not. If they had, your analogy would be correct.
This would hold true, imho, except that Mozilla encourages others to distribute these programs. As such, they give authorization for people to represent them. It's like going to a Quizzno's and buying a sandwhich, getting sick and then sueing the store (which has a placard of being independently owned) and the parent company. Yea the parent company didn't make a bad sandwhich, but guess what - they authorized this store to make them in their name.
Does it suck for the parent company, yes, but that is the chance they risk for letting others do their job.
First of all the content of public web sites is generally freely available to all. This is the point of the web.
First: You said "Generally freely available" - thats the problem, they are not all freely available. Some require registration, subscription, authorization, etc.
Second: Just because I put works on my website does not mean I authorize anyone else to put a copy of the works on their website (or search engine). I may want people to HAVE to come to my website to get my content.
I do agree it may be difficult to control, but there are ways. Google could require anyone who wants to be on Google to gaurantee they are authorized to display the copyrighted works prior to doing a google URL submission. They could also require websites to include back-end coding (in the HTML is fine) in a specific format, on the top of each page that is authorized to view. So when Google does the indexing it looks for these codes.
You must be new to/. Didn't you know that anything that is mass produced (especially by The Man), established, and expensive has some underlying agenda, is false, inaccurate, and supports people (i.e. The Man).
On a serious note: I agree with you totally. Encyclopedias are fine. They are peer reviewed, written by experts, widely accepted, and have many standards (including moral) that they uphold. That does not mean I only use encyclopedia's while researching, but they definitly get my nod (as well as every teacher I have enver encountered) of approval.
Sorry Arkanes - you are either an alarmist or just trying to curry favor with the mods of/. (which is not hard to do that, just say something like "The Man sucks" and you already get +1 insightful):)

It's not really about being biased. It says it is a good purchase for them, it didn't say it was a good purchase for us...though it might be good for us. Not everything a big company does has to be evil.

I disagree. With the exception of you guys, I do not know ONE person who reads/. or similar forums - but I know MANY people who play computer games. They range from the geek to the preppy and all thats in between.
Yes it will be about KDR's and the like. People do not talk about the "quality" of football (well not regularly) but they talk about the yards thrown of a quarterback. So it will be for gaming - though in this industry I doubt a game like CS: Source will last more then 2-3 years while football has been around for many decades.
It's new when non-computer companies decide to sponser these events. It's nothing spectacular if nVidia sponsers a game - hell thats just advertisment for their product. It is something spectacular when a company that advertises itself as "baby safe" is sponsering a game that's entire purpose is to kill the opposition.
Disclose it to strangers maybe, but to the owner of the car - they would probably have to.
Also, GM would have to disclose this device to the buyer of the car - probably even sign an explicit form.
Out of curiousity - why a girl, especially a little girl? Why not just write as an adult male "My grandmom was in the car...." You do realize in the car industry, men are given more respect then women right?
Nor do I fear being tracked by the gov't. I do not comit any crimes. I am not worried about GM finding out if I cheated on my g/f (which I don't do, but hypothetically). If this can, however, tell me whats up with my car - then I am all for it. It is very expensive to get your car diagnosed because of the silly little "check engine" light.

Most color specialists (forget the exact title) work largely on numbers. It is a science with them. What we may say is a perfect picture, they will say is perfectly flawed.
Not everyones legal system works like that. Here in the UK (where this small company is based) we have loser pays. Stops all pointless lawsuits dead; if google took me on and threw £10 million on lawyers, IIRC I am allowed to spend the same and claim it back from them. Assuming I win, if not I'm screwed!!
Does that "loser" pays policy work even if the loser is a defendent? I can understand if the loser is the plaintiff, but a defendent?
How do i get avilazar.com through litigation and make a profit? Cause some company that just leads to a search engine wants like $5000 for me to get my name.
If you RTFA, you will see that the company is a small company, and was involved in communication with google over the span of 15 months or so, before jumping right into litigation. That sounds like the right thing to do, IMO, rather than just sue immediately. The company is a small one, and they say they don't have the big money that Google has to bring a law suit just to protect their name.
Exactly!!! Even if this companies claims are bogus, they spent 15 months in negotiations and are considering court after they exhuasted this method. Their only concern is if they can fund such a case. They went through the proper channels and they are concerned (rightly so).
People like to defend their favorite (this case Google) and say "well why are they waiting so long" Well, again to reiterate, Google has lost of money and lots of lawyers. Not everyone does this. If I found I had a legitimate claim against Google and could win it 100% I still would not be able to take it to court because I could not afford the lawyers and court fee's.
Just a number of months ago, people on/. were patting the Canadian gov't on the back for protecting the little guy from the spammer. Now it doesn't go your way and they are the r00t of all evil?
Thats because Business' do not apply to the DNCR. Telemarketers can still call a business. The DNCR is there to protect personal numbers. It seems to work well for me. I only receive one telemarketing call in the past year or so and it was from a company that I purchase from in the past.
Years ago I watched, on Discovery or some such channel, a show about hurricanes, tornados, volcanos and such. Each of these events performs a specific process. Volcanic eruptions reduce the pressure build-up in the Earth's core. Hurricanes and Tornados serve to reduce the heat and weather pressure buildup.
Toying with these destructive forces without allowing for an alternate release zone would be catastrophic. Yes we may be able to, one day, prevent these things, but we need to divert them. Imagine if we could control volcano's from erupting. What would happen if the Earth had no escape valves for all of that pressure....POP goes the weasal.

Actually, the penalty for making a profit on copyright infringement is more severe then not makign a profit on copyright infringement.
For example: Sell bootleg CD's and you will pay a harder fee (and jail time) then if you were just handing out bootleg CD's.
