The fact is - a free market economy is very good at providing news - there are SO many news venues. So maybe the 11 o'clock news doesn't give the latest update in the tsunami, but maybe the 6 o'clock, or the 7(am) o'clock, or cnn, or some newspaper, or some news website is.

If you don't think a free market economy news organization is working - do you think it should be a socialist based news group? Say like the ones the Russians had? Or the one Iraq had?

well if that $950 million is not doing any good, maybe we should pull the funding all-together. I think people like you should be thankful that the US is spending American money (my money) on helping a bunch of strangers out. Instead of looking a gift horse in the mouth - you should be saying thank you, and start helping by cleaning up the mess - or maybe donate some more of your money if you think the US is not doing enough.

Maybe if a person read every newspaper, magazine, news website and watched every tv news in a given day they might be able to get a good portion of world events but highly unlikely - and unrealistic with time frames. The media is not responsible to post everything that happens. To blame them and call them irresponsible is, quite frankly, irresponsible of you.

Actually you are using discrimination improperly again. Because it effects every state, not just a select few, it is not discrimination. The federal gov't will not terminate it's agreement with the states (another civil war anyone) and that is not a valid reason. They are terminating a specific part of the agreement and it is not discrimination (remember I argued that you called it discrimination) because each state has the same option.

Highway support is not the only services the fed provides so your argument cannot apply about the "cake and eat it to." The fed taxes us, they provide us with many services - and they provide extra funding for some services but they want something in return...if you don't give it to them, they do not give oyu the funding. It is a fair deal.

WIth the exception of the statements about the secretary of homeland defense getting some more insane powers - i think this law is pretty damn good. If the state does not want to comply, they do not have to, but they do not get money to fix their roads (the fed still fixes its roads, however).

oh yea the semi-private group. SEPTA an organization that is privately held, but get's the benefits of a gov't organization and at some points as a non-profit.

Their inability to make a profit resides directly with their corporate attitude. Their customer service is far below acceptable, their police force (the only rent-a-cops I know of that have almost as much power as the police force) are borderline Nazi's, and their drivers are a menace to the roads.

I have lived in Philly almost all of my life - SEPTA is where it is because of itself.

Now even if you totally disagree with what I said above - this below statement does hold true:

Society (not just ours) has many problems. Our society also has many resources. Just because SEPTA is in dire straights does not mean we should ignore other issues - like providing internet access to the public at a cheap/free rate.

Hopefully the president will veto this (particular part of the law), i doubt it though. So our hope resides with the senate. The only way the judicial board will get a say is if somebody takes it to court.

My biggest gripe about laws is that they make them TOO comprehensive and add TOO many extras in there. So while 90% of the law may be great, that last 10% will probably rape, plunder and loot the people.

Here is another example. A company institutes a mandate - every 6 months EVERY employee must take a drug test. If you do not want to take the drug test you will be fired. Three employees decide to not take the drug test. They are fired. Have they been discriminated against? No, they had the option and they rejected it. With that rejection came certain consequences.
