  1. iPC on Dell is Building iMac Lookalikes · · Score: 1

For the market that the imac is targeted to, 64 megs of ram would do fine. 17" monitors are a nice plus, but not so nice to the end cost of a pc that's marketed to the home/new user/cheap audience. The same goes for scsi; it just adds to the cost of the pc. Cost that would better go for the option of adding in an add on usb hub. Scsi is meant for the high speed professional and enthusiast audiences who know all about installing devices and configuring things. Usb is meant for the "I want to plug it in and make it work" people.

Personally, I absolutely adore my home and work dell cases. Mainly because dell is one of the few big companies that still make the top of the case flat, so it's easy to sit stuff on top of. Although, a cow spotted box would definitely be a plus. Perhaps cow spotted with a flat top? I can dream.

If the democrats nominate him as their presidential candidate, they're fucked. 95% of normal voters (and media as well) have no idea what open source is, much less who came up with the idea, so I'm sure he'll slip by on this one. But, the whole invention of the internet fiasco isn't going to be easy on him when everyone goes into heavy duty campaign mode. The republicans are going to be all over him.

Between the democrats inventing everything and the republicans shitting on civic rights, the independent vote is looking pretty good.

    2. Why did you have to repartition to install it? Win95 didn't support FAT32 until osr2.5. All it would require is at least deleting some program directories and at most a reformat.

    3. Who'd you find dumb enough to pay you $340 to install win95 on something? I'd sure as hell like to find some people like that.

    4. You indicate that upgrading to win98 takes 4 hours. Since when? On average, it takes me 20-30 minutes to install it. Even installing from disks wouldn't take 4 hours.

    5. I'm asuming that the refusal parts after win98 means you didn't install 98 on the computer. So, why did you include the cost of win98 installation in your tco?

  4. Who should we blame on The Melissa Syndrome · · Score: 1

Alot of businesses use MS Office exlusively. It's all Microsoft's responsibility. They know quite well that the vast majority of users will never in their lives need to embed a macro in a word processing files, yet they continue to leave macros on by default.

"So, the person should use linux, god dammit! Office suites in linux can save in MS Office format!" you say? Most people up here don't even know what linux is, much less how to install and configure it. And nothing but 95/nt is officially supported here. Linux and mac people are on their own. On top of all that, lots of secretaries need to run Outlook to access their boss's schedules and calendars to set dates for meetings and such. Does linux support that?

The computing environment here is almost entirely Microsoft except for a couple of vax servers for some legacy services. We also rely very heavily on features of outlook for information exchange and communication. I'm not sure how outlook-compliant linux email apps are.

So, not everyone can just tell Microsoft and all their apps to go to hell and run off and use linux. It might very well be the best thing since sliced bread, but all that dosen't matter if it dosen't integrate well with the current information infrastructure of a business.

Granted, they're not the most insightful, pulitzer prize winning pieces of literary greatness, but alot of people like them. If you don't like them, then not only do you not have to read them, you don't even have to know they exist. That's why the filtering is there. You have 31 days worth of them on your computer. 31 days x 1.5 gigs per day = 46.5 gigs. You have 46.5 gigs of mp3s? Unless you happen to have a stack of scsi hard drives (and nothing scsi is cheap) sitting next to you , I seriously doubt you have 31 days of mp3s sitting around. And if you're rich enough to have that many hard drives hanging around, why are you complaining about the cost of a $15 cd?
