GPL style license(anyone that protects the 4 freedoms):
Preserves freedom of developers and users for this and all future generations
Facilitates a community driven approach to software development
Provides security through transparency
Provides interoperability almost for free
Promotes the adoption of open source licenses
BSD style license:
Preserves freedom of developers and users for the first generation only
Facilitates a community driven approach to software development
Provides security through transparency
Provides interoperability almost for free
Promotes the adoption of open source code
Allows the option of going closed source
Reasons to choose BSD style licenses over GPL style:
Avoid preserving the freedom of future generations (no value in this one)
Promote the use of open source code in proprietary software (questionable value to the open source community, great value to the proprietary software community)
Allows the option of going closed source (no value to the open source community, great value to the proprietary software community)
Conclusion:
BSD style licenses offer only questionable value to the open source community but is always beneficial to the proprietary world
Conclusion of the conclusion:
Choosing a BSD style license over a GPL style license means not caring about user freedoms unless a good explanation is presented
Conclusion of the conclusion of the conclusion:
Anyone who says the BSD is more free then the GPL is full of shit.
The BSD people are full of shit. There I said it.
I'm tired of all the politeness GPL defenders show to these people. They don't deserve.
The BSD exists for one reason and one reason alone. To get Open Source Code into Closed Source Applications.
I'm open minded enough to know that *that* isn't always a bad thing. I understand, for instance, why the theora and vorbis codecs use an apeche license. But most of the time the open source community gets nothing from the BSD that the GPL couldn't offer also.
If you call yourself an open source developer you have to explain why we need to give up code to proprietary shops, otherwise the only other reason to go with the BSD is to keep open the opportunity to go proprietary.
If you want to go proprietary at least have the decency to admit doing so. Saying choose BSD (-style) because "its more free" shows you are full of shit.
I will state however, that a developer who don't know how to manage is still better than a manager who doesn't know how to code. Yes, in theory if you get the very, very best manager and the worst of all developers you could get a positive comparison but in any practical real world situation a developer still makes for a better manager than a simple manager, clueless managers are the root of all evil.
As for the SABDFL, Mark delegates all his actual managent task to his developers, he is just called in when the community is in a hippcup, but here he is much more of a client than a manager.
It should be mentioned that while a business person can organize a distro, the most succesful distros aren't run as business at all.
I see some improovments and drawbacks, but not too much.
Looking forward to: - Alt+3 shortcut for Deskbar (much needed) - Improved virtual desktop features (good enough already) - The new evolution - And totem.
Dispointed by: - The new permissions change interface:
This is GNOME using a BAAAD idea just to copycat apple. Although KDE had this layout since before OS X, i always prefered GNOME's permision grid, it was sooo much more intuitive *because* it provided all the information there and you could change it with a single click. Now it takes the whole screen to fit this huge dialog where the permissions are spread and is difficult to quickly guess (abd later change) what permission should the file have.
- C# tainting core GNOME:
Correct me if I'm wrong but, MS has yet to publicy declare that it will never use C# pattents to hurt free sofware. What's a compromised framework doing in the official GNOME distribution?
With news of a MS guy getting into Mozilla, Mozilla guys gettion into MS offices, and C# getting into GNOME, the possibility that we are seeing an organized trojan operation is becoming more and more plausible.
I write free software because I want my users to be able change their software. If my users can't change my code how is it good for me?
It is my personal choice not to subsidise DRM device producers. Do you have a problem with that?
"Yokoska" if you are in a hurry, "Yokosuka" otherwise.
But there is no confusion because "every one realizes Yokoska is spelled Yokosuka". Every japanese speaking one, that is.
I'm sick of the people saying that we should just switch to macs when Apple treats their fans like garbage. Some of us are looking for something other than a new pimp.
Apparently appreciationg your freedoms is zealotry and caring about your rights is unfashinable.
My bad i forgot the' _'! As a matter of fact SciTE is also my favorite text editor for windows and linux and there are many better (but fatter) editors build around scintilla.
I'm Cream vor vim does a pretty good job at making vim cua complaint, but there are still some very naughy usability issues.
What few people have notices is that some of the new features of vim are specificaly requested features by the cream team, they have complained that there were limitations in what they could do with cream and this new features allow them to fix their problems.
So i wouldn't surprise me if the cream developers added these features themselves, i hope that makes the cream project more popular (and more popular = por polished!)
I hate vim and emacs for not using a CUA) interfase by default, or at least include a well documented quick switch to CUA.
What is the faster way of deleting 4 words? In vim its just Esc-d4w and fighting against years of muscle memory used to ctrl+shift+arrow their way around.
I tried cream for vim but it only works in the graphical display and then again many things were just too hard. Want to disable regexp? hit 3 buttons to toggle that single setting. Want to search a word? don't forget to hit tab every time since the ok doesn't have auto focus.
So currently the best terminal editor i've used is "ne" for regular text and mcedit for code, but then again i rather use X.
I know how geeky this is going to sound... no wait! this is slashdot...
You know, there is a manga with the name of Dream or Die, are the submiters fans of the manga?
OMG KITTENS would be more correct, I know many teen girls who don't care about ponies, I don't only know a single one that doesn't squeeks at little kitten.
Oh a fellow powerpro addict. Yes it is unfortunate to tell you this but, no I don't think there is yet a pp replacement for *nix but... I belive there are two approximate solutions to your addiction.
Firstly, go KDE. Gnome is excellent and currentlly my default DE (because of Ubuntu) but KDE has never cased to be short of amazing. There are so many options that you will find that pp isn't that indispensable.
Second, I belive a sort of pp for KDE is in the making (I belive is called Kontroller) it could be the cure for this old addiction.
I'll rehash it so I get modded troll again.

I'm i the only one who thinks that, 100 000 years from now humans will be either:
a) Suficiently advanced as to choose their own physical apparence and bodly composition or...
b) Extinct.
those are my theories.
I wonder if a sufficient amount of readers block zonk, could he actually get "demoted" from his position?
Well like they say, there is only one way to find out! *block* *block*

Slavery isn't necessarily evil it is a different agriculture method. If the tools fit, use them.
Opium isn't necessarily evil it is a different exporting product. If the tools fit, use them.
Not because something is pragmatical it means it is moral. This is a critique at your argument of morality through pragmatism.
damn, i wont be able to buy them! guess i'll have to move to a more free country like china to get uncrippled hardware

Odd I though it was older women who are into horses.
NOW I GET IT! It is a Simpsons reference isn't it?
With Lisa en the pony thing *schrugs*
Apr02 in GMT starts at 18:00 central time, In other words, 15 minutes left!!
OMG KITTENS would be more correct, I know many teen girls who don't care about ponies, I don't only know a single one that doesn't squeeks at little kitten.
I bet cuteoverload is workig with slashdot in this one, unless cuteoverload is only a sock puppet for today's aprilfool.
But I don't know what's worse, the pink fluffy girly news, or the fact that I ACTUALLY LIKED the photos in this site.
One last word:
NECOCONECO!!!

But... "Don't prevent the user from doing stupid things because that would also stop them from doing clever things."
But thanks to the RIAA shutting down lyrics sites we will never know...
May I include open formats? I don't want support for a 1000+ file formats, only one, an open one that has high quality compression like vorbis.
Depends on whether you know how to spell amendment correctly or not.
