I read posts about "yeah, greedy fuckers, trying to stop growing technology". Take a step out of the computer world. You're making illegal copies of music and distributing it. What in the hell do you expect people to do? What would you do if you're all of the sudden losing money because of really low record sales because of the distribution of your music on the internet? And don't give me any "yeah, but people still buy stuff all the time" bullshit. I know plenty of albums I didn't buy because of their availability on the internet.
When you copy a tape/vcr, you physically make it, and physically distribute it. When you do so with an mp3, it's just a file on your computer. It takes one click to download/upload/play it. Of course you can make illegal copies on tape players and vcr's, but they're not half as easy to obtain/make as mp3's
Actually, I never tried the mailing list. I just sent off an email. Thank you. But I'm no longer concerned with the cable modem. Right now I'm at my dorm. As for "weird MS servers", the dhcp server here is ISC on some sorta unix, probably solaris. Another goofy thing, I can manually set up my network info on FreeBSD, and DNS resolution works, but I can't ping the gateway or anythign else for that matter. Damn goofy stuff. And all I wanted to do was get networking to work with linux or anything besides windows. Nuts.
You know, all this game stuff is nice and good. But all I want is to get DHCP to fucking work. Is that too much to ask? Can't get it to work with cable modems, can't get it to work with my stupid dorm room, this sucks.
I really hope someone reads this and's like "yeah, i had the same problem, here's what to do".
But it won't happen. Goddamnit, I'm so pissed off about this. Search on the internet, all I get is people saying "yeah, you need to add the -h for hostnames, that'll work". Well it doesn't. And also, I can't put the network info (ip, gateway, ect) in manually and get it to work either.
Does anyone think it could be a problem with my ethernet card??? After more than 6 months of this, I've exuasted alot of options. The dhcp server is isc.
When I boot freeBSD, it sends out DHCPDISCOVER messages, gets a reply, but sends a DHCPREQUEST right back out to the broadcast address, and not the dhcp server's address.
DHCP works fine on windows 98.
What am I doing wrong, I'm really desperate. I'm also sorry for posting this offtopic stuff to slashdot, but someone has to have come across something like this.
damn, that clears that up. and all this time i thought it was just an article by yahoo to distract our attention while it flashes subliminal messages in the background. These subliminal messages most likely have statements like "kill kill kill", and "zip your pants back up", leading me to believe that my post is pretty fucking stupid to begin with and should be moderated down pretty low.
examinations will be done in the strictest of confidence, without anasthetics, vegetable oil or lubricating midgets!
Geez, at first I was very suspicious of your "hot young actress examinations". As I read your words, I was troubled by one thought in the back of my head, would he use lubricating midgets. But then I read that line. You've sold me on your examinations buddy, I got myself a hot young actress, where do I sign up?
I figure tv's will go the way of the once bandwidth increases. Well, maybe not go extinct, but blend in more with computers with one or two functions, such as browsing the internet and checking email. Figure with alot of bandwith and a good picture, you'll have your broadcasts come over the internet, like streaming audio is doing for radio stations. Like you have your major broadcasters, but you also have your choice of amatuer broadcasters (yeah, probably mostly porn) to pick from also.
I mean, this might be a few years off, but aside from work related and computer-nerdish stuff, what do you do that doesn't involve using the internet/checking email? I see the majority (no, not all) of computers sorta "dumbing down" in functionality in favor of easy interfaces and less buggy software/os's. I think that's good, because non-geeks shouldn't have to deal with that crap.
The word "meatspace" is new to me, I've seen it twice in the past two days now. Is this word fairly new, or do I just not know any of the slang words of the internet?
How about this instead: Send them a clue. By email, by boycotts, by not buying HKS, etc
Yes, and I'm so sure that people that would boycott/email represent so many bank customers that they wouldn't be laughed at for boycotting a bank. What exactly is so wrong with banks at the current point in time that would require them to open source their software? You're an IT professional, and you "know" that the only good security is open security, do you think if security by obscurity was really that bad banks would use it? The banks aren't clueful of what? That "open source" is taking over the world? Let me know and I'll shut up.

The quote is from a former mtv skit show, "the state". It was a skit with two guys named barry and levan, and their two hundred and forty dollars, worth of pudding. the state was the best skit show ever, in it's short running it captivated my interest every time it was on. I'm changing the "foty" to "forty", because I can no longer remember why I left out the "r".
haha, I'm far from "mainstream". I don't really play console games, or any games for that matter, i just really liked tony hawk's pro skater. I wish they would make a game like that for bmx. i really don't have much against mario or sonic, i like those games, i was just joking around. that's cool that they're coming out with pro skater for N64 and Dreamcast.
I was wondering though, what kind of work it takes to port a game to other game consoles? What has to be re-written? Does anyone work with this stuff?
I disagree. This is my opinion, and I'm not much of a gamer. The majority of "console gamers" that I've come across will buy the majority of sytems that come along. Me, well, I bought a playstation because I heard some good things about it, and alot of people I knew had it. I would buy a playstation 2 if it came out, for a few reasons:
1. It's backwards compatible with old playstation games (as far as i know, if i'm wrong, let me know) 2. Playstation has a wide variety of games available, games that interest me, not some fucking hedgehog or fat italian guy jumping around, but quality stuff, like tony hawk's pro skater. 3. I don't have a 3, this is here because 3 looks better two, and adds meaningless content to this post.
Bottom line, I'm pretty sure playstation 2 is going to sell like a mofo when it comes out, and this move is nowhere near as "gutsy" as people are making it out to be. Sony makes a whole hell of alot of stuff, and it survived quite well before playstation even came out.

Maybe I misread your post, but what does "Java Swing" have to do with c++? By the way, there's not much to learn when it comes to swing, it's just like the awt, with more stuff and more managability, and the letter "J" in front of every class.

I've heard from people that slimfast tastes fairly bad. Can you vouch for that? By the way, I'm well aware that this post is offtopic, but I made it 2 levels underneath an offtopic post, as to not bother anyone.
It's not a server, it's a desktop that runs on top of X11. XFree86 is important because it's free and it works good, at least by my standards, and the majority of gui apps available are developed for it.

I'd respond by saying:
"Ladies and gentleman of usenet, we've formulated a respose to your so called death penalty, f*** you."
Then I'd moon them.
