    you forgot the war on terrorism.

      9/11 changed this country...changed it.....in ways which we cant possibly imagine or even fathem. just look around, look at your work collegaues, your neighbours and yes even your family. then ask yourself can i trust these people? can really trust them?

      the format wars are a mear distraction. possibly a cleaver ploy by the terrorists to lull hard working familes all around this great land of ours into a confusion then they will use that weakness to attack us!
    or not.

    just be afraid.

    Yes satellite intelligence is immensely to gather a *part* of the picture, but far too much reliance soley put on it. While HUMINT or having assests on the ground has basically been ignored for 20 years.

    i always thought it odd the way veterens in the USA get a military funeral?

      in Britian once you leave the armed forces, thats it, thanks old chap. you have to be currently serving to get one.

      one of my grandfathers and 2 great uncles fought in the war and sadly all gone in that 4 years, (great uncle was a spitfire pilot and wasnt a very happy when a doctor grounded him for being colour bling halfway through his 2nd tour! great guy). but none of them would of even expected or want one.

      but different countries different traditions. :)

    i dont know if its just me but i could never sign up with Verizon due to its highly annoying name.

      They probably spent thousands on ad people to come up with it.

    [annoying ad guy #1:] We need a name which "encapsulates the broadband generation", something with "reach" and "go ahead qualities" which says "hey, we're here and going places! but we couldnt gave a rat's ass about you customers"

    just looking around the site, it is all depressing lowest common denominator. but that's federal education schemes for you!

      on the "kids'" homepage there is also a weird video of Dubya doing a live linkup with the last Shuttle Crew[?] which actually depresses me even more. he waffles off some crap about the "importance of their mission" and "how proud the folks are", then the mission commander spiels off the latest BS NASA press release.

      NASAs manned mission has sadly lost its way and is rapidly turning into a joke. what happened to the NASA which wasn't afraid of taking risks and pushing real boundaries. the astronauts which you aspired to be as a kid........."important missions" my left ass cheek, the last thing a manned mission did which was of an real use is fixing Hubble!

      While the unmanned missions plods away doing the real science and exploration with none of the kudos or more importantly funding.

    sigh, i know sound like a broken record and I have read the same stuff on /. a million times.

    a complete failure in the UK.

    i think mainly due the fack that CD player were well established. the labeles didnt push it, and you had to order MDs due none of the big record shops (or small ones) carrying them in any large number.

    who wants to wait 5 days for a MD to come in, while you can just walk down the aisle and pick up a CD?

    i use slackware and mainly only upgrade as per distro release. although i do have a sort of hybrid of programs where i like the extra functionality of a program update. saying that i am a bit of new kernel whore. meh.
