But does the manager own the copyright? What if he has gone rogue and offered the song without permission? And if he does own/have the rights to it, once I download that song, am I free to make it available as I please since it's already been make freely available?

  3. Re:Who does the RIAA represent? on Band Leaks Own Album, Blames Pirates · · Score: 5, Interesting

Is the manager technically represented by the RIAA or is he simply an employee of the band represented by it? If he doesn't fit into the RIAA hierarchy officially, they would be best served to go after him. After all, haven't we decided it's best to go after the drug producers and major dealers instead of the runners and users?

Didn't the players need to go out of their way to find the offensive material? No wonder the case was thrown out on the grounds of there not being a "class" for this class-action suit. Otherwise, we could all use torrents to download porn and then sue the entire internet for offending us.

Why has politics devolved to such childish acts? This is how I would've tried to win an argument at the age of 7 - either by turning off the lights and leaving OR just talking through the end of a conversation. Now our elected officials are running the country like this? Ugh.

Thank god I can still play all sorts of games where I steal and kill all sorts of things. It's probably a good thing I can't play those games after playing beer pong, too, since getting tipsy might through off my aim. Better still, if I make a game where kids vote in an election, will I need to change it from a presidential election to a student council election? I wouldn't want to teach any kids to break the law by voting underage.

Maybe this is the true origin of the term Beowulf cluster. Beowulf, being the jock/bully, would see a nerd playing with his calculator and give him hell. The nerds responded by clustering together for protection and inadvertently discovered greater computing power.

  11. Sign me up on Windows Is Dead – Long Live Midori? · · Score: 0

The reduced cost of a computer means I can upgrade more often to a higher performance machine, meaning I can keep up with cutting edge games and software. All the hardware is still my own. I choose if and when to upgrade the video card, the RAM, the hard drive, etc., but now I don't need to go through the hassle of reinstalling all of my favorite programs when I switch from one box another. It also means sharing between my desktop and laptop (and TV set?) is easier than ever.

The 366 million seems ambitious, but an online model would also curtail some piracy. The equivalent of copying my Windows disk would be to give out my i-Windows login, meaning they would just use my desktop.

Of course, why not, especially if the cost is high, share it between users? Especially if it will support multiple desktops, won't every household maintain one OS for multiple users?

It is definitely a privilege in the sense that you're asking. There is nothing intrinsic to our right to the internet. However, the anti-trust laws guarantee us the right to market competition. Surely somebody will come along to compete with these ISPs by offering unfiltered content, as they as they have the opportunity (thanks to anti-trust) and right (thanks to no regulation).

And the bat-wannabes set up the next movie, in that Batman will become conflicted by his growing role of villain, defeated, and replaced by a more legit wannabe. Wasn't it Azrael in the Frank Miller series where Batman gets his back broken?

Though honestly I think it will be Bane, since I think the plot will revolve around Batman coming this close to giving up on being a hero and having a wannabe step in for a time.

Then again, the line about the new Batsuit being able to stop a cat, plus the fact that a Hollywood movie needs a major female role, makes me think Catwoman.

I heard a sound bite from the writers saying they chose not to go into his back story in order to make the character "absolute". If the "series" continues long enough, I suspect we'll see a new Joker down the line, and perhaps they would provide more background to use multiple actors at different ages to distract from the fact that the Joker isn't Heath Ledger.
