So if Viacom got $2.25 per subscriber for these channels in 2008, and is asking $2.50 in 2009, how much are you going to refund to users? If it's more than $2.50, you're better off paying Viacom, if it's less, people will laugh at you ("take away the best 10% of my channels and knock 2% off my bill?")
I agree. Make sure you really LOVE anyone who asks you to help setup a computer for free. You'll be providing free support for the rest of your/their lives.
That's great and all, but I need a version of Windows that doesn't poop on itself when it tries to do two things at once, before I upgrade my PC from XP Pro.
But the itunes store takes care of marketing, distribution, payment, etc. So it's hard to compare to a game bought in a store. All of these things add to the cost of a game or application bought in at the mall but add no value.
I develop for the iPhone. What restrictions are there in iPhone development that I'm missing? Why do people keep saying it is restricted?
What apps can you create in Android that you can't on the iPhone? I have yet to see any.
You are not required to release your software for 99 cents or free. You can charge whatever you want. The fact someone may release a similar product for less is called the free market.
I laugh at the whole debate. When you stop investing in crafting the artists of tomorrow and instead center your model around being a distribution machine, don't be shocked when the internet figures out a better way to distribute your property.
Music labels are dead. They don't control the artists. They don't control access to the masses. They have no traits that would let them survive in the future.
[For the youngsters reading this, yes, there was a blank tape tax that the music industry was able to get passed that did the same thing on cassette tapes. Cassette tapes were after 8-tracks and before CD's. The were around vinyl, but you could play them in your car.]
Seriously. The best games are cinematic because they borrow heavily from elements of cinema. Enroll in a film program. Learn to write, character development, storyboarding, and to shoot.
Then find an opportunity to use the skills in a game. The rest will come.
Read the actual page and you'll understand better. Read the page for Improv, which mentions Rock, Folk, Jazz, and Classical as examples where Improv can be found.
While you're at Wikipedia, look up Transitive and Nontransitive logic.
Jazz is not random. Jazz is not improv. Jazz is floating counterpoint. This is a specific thing, built on top of well established music theory.
Saying it is random is like looking at the byte values that make up a JPEG of the Grand Canyon and saying "I just don't see it. It's just random numbers".
I'll never understand the tendency of slashdotters (not you, of course, I'm talking about those other guys) to assume anything they don't understand is beneath them.
"Don't trade your time for money. Trade your time for experience. Then trade the experience for more money!" -Me.
Don't look only at dollars. Don't even look to who is going to value you most as an employee/intern. Look to fill that experience gap that you and everyone else has coming out of school.
I live outside philly, in a traditional republican area, and while I waited to vote, two election officials were openly discussing how to slow down the line by forcing people to que up outside the building instead of in the large lobby. I thought it kind of interesting.
And make sure you have a clear chain of emails showing this was your boss's idea.
Things like this always fall apart in the end. People who are greedy and short sighted in one respect are always greedy and short sighted in other ways that eventually bite them in the ass.
Someone will come along, see the idea, and will invest a small amount of cash in their own, and end up with something much better in the end.
A 1.0 product is for the early adopters. You won't make a lot of money, but people will give you great feedback and guidance, that will make your 3.0 release a grand slam.
Here's a crazy way to make owners stick to your brand:
Build great products and provide superior service!
If my car started spamming me, it would go straight back to the dealer. That's a defect, baby. Fix it.
Hey VonNeuman, are you saying the best predictor of the future is the present? :-)
So the model goes like this:
Studio creates TV show
Sells it to Network
Network bundles; sells to cable provider
Cable provider sells to consumers
Geeze, this is more convoluted than the Music market.
I have to think all this wrangling is for nothing. BitTorrent, AppleTV, NetFlix On Demand. They're going to crush that model.
I think they should ask users to pay 1 cent per search.
Not demand that they pay it, but simply ask them to.
Track the # of searches for registered users and display it in the corner somewhere.
I agree. Make sure you really LOVE anyone who asks you to help setup a computer for free. You'll be providing free support for the rest of your/their lives.
Really, there are already injectable bone fillers on the market. Many of them. Google Norian or bone fillers or Demineralized Bone.
This is so not news. It's not even Fark.
1) Keep the clients focused on the business requirements, not their personal whims.
2) Keep the techies focused on the business requirements, not their personal whims.
3) Profit.

Not unlike the blank tape tax of the 80's.

Can anyone name any other occupation where people have such an exaggerated feeling of ownership over what they produce?
Even if you think you own this software, if it's a good idea, people will copy it, or steal the design, and never pay you a dime.
Do it. Do a great job. When the time is right, move on to the next great thing.

I wrote a long reply to you message which I'm deleting and not posting.
You're reading into what I said too much.
The points you're arguing are things I did not say.
Have a nice day.
This is what passes for knowledge these days?

Anyone have any good stories?

That person may even be you.
Was just watching Fox News as they were explaining how when Obama says "Tax Cuts" it's a bad idea, and when McCain says "Tax Cuts" it's a great idea.
Reminds me of this article.
Marketing people are evil.
A 1.0 product is for the early adopters. You won't make a lot of money, but people will give you great feedback and guidance, that will make your 3.0 release a grand slam.
Steal $120,000 from a local bank and see how many years in jail you end up with.
What is described in the example is known as Partial Reinforcement, not Superstition.
Hit the nail on the head.
