I've seen similar issues in XP - opening Word/Excel/PPT and then dragging the file in, or using the "Open" dialogue works fine, but double-clicking files takes ages.
The way we fix it is to disable DDE:
1) Open My Computer/Explorer and go to Tools -> Folder Options
2) Go to File Types
3) Find and select the file extension that is causing problems (.doc,.xls etc)
4) Click Advanced
5) Select Open and click Edit
6) Untick Use DDE and change the entry in Application used to perform action - remove references to dde and add "%1" (with quotes) to the end of the path, eg.
I didn't even need a degree. I spent a year in CS and hated it, so I got myself kicked out so my parents couldn't send me back. I'm now a network administrator, looking after networks in more than 10 different schools.

I think you've misspelled "Windows NT" as "Linux".
This bug actually applies to Win 9x, rather than to NT[1]. I'm led to believe that the reason is that MS used an int as a millisecond counter in VMM[2]. At 49.7* days, the int wraps, and Windows panics.
The bug was not discovered until 1999. Reportedly, that's how long it took for someone to convince Microsoft that they actually managed to keep Windows up for 49.7 days.
Can't we go even one day on Slashdot without an Australian "story"?
Why don't you Aussie/. editors just launch slashdot.org.au and be done with it?
Oh, right, of course... Because you know that only Australians (if anybody) would give a shit about slashdot.org.au, and the whole point of spamming this Slashdot is so that Americans will "notice" you.
Wassamatter? 1 single story out of 20 per day for an international technology leader on an international technology site?
You have obviously never worked in a Windows Domain environment. Most of the bootup time is bootup domain scripts that run well before you even log on - scripts that audit installed software, update antivirus, install software, etc etc etc. Also, the vast majority of users in a Windows domain don't get given enough permissions to install software.
Off topic, having a myminicity link in your sig certainly doesn't help us respect you in any way.
Use microbiology to prove that the sun emits gamma rays
The fact is that trying to prove that God does or doesn't exist using science is absurd. You don't use a screwdriver to weld plate steel, because it's not the correct tool for the job.
Basic atheistic logic like you show above amounts to "I can't prove the existence or non-existence of God using my selected method, therefore he/she(/it? - pick a god, any god) can't exist."
And here is where atheism becomes a religion:
The apparent need of atheists to convert those who do not share their views, and the zealotry of those trying to do the convincing.
Forgot to add the probable location for the xml file in Linux:/usr/share/firefox/searchplugins/google.xml
This edit causes "-site:experts-exchange.com -site:pricegrabber.com" to the end of each google search performed from the search box next to the address bar.
As always, for anyone trying this, make a copy before editing, in case something goes wrong.
You will need to restart Firefox (at least under Windows) for the change to take effect.
Back then, when google results actually returned something useful instead of 20 pages of useless links to price-grabber or experts-exchange.
You bring up an excellent point. In response, I have edited my google.xml search file (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\searchplugins\google.xml) thus:
The vast majority of Myth has supported mouse/touchscreen for quite a while. There have been notable parts that didn't, however (such as the music player), which made the system nigh on useless for an in-car touchscreen system.
Strange. I do onsite tech support, and I'm an Ambulance Officer. Maybe we're just beggars for punishment?
Got to hate that...

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\WINWORD.EXE"
becomes
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\WINWORD.EXE"
This solves the issue for us.

I shall cherish the moment...
Hmmm. Good question then. I've seen a couple of them. /. staff maybe?
That's "flair". Geek card please!
I think that means that f1vlad is a subscriber (that is, they pay money to be able to post "fr0sty p1ss" before regular readers see the articles).

[2] Windows crash after 49.7 days, Automatically... Do you know?

Looks suspiciously like wat (text-only, marginally NSFW).
Why does the set "More than 2,000 shorter words" include the one longer word as well?

No, it is a scientific theory.

That should read 'This edit causes "-site:experts-exchange.com -site:pricegrabber.com" to be added to the end of each'.
