No, no it isn't. phanboy_iv has explicitly stated that he/she(/it?) will place that wager. What you are seeing is first-hand - a direct quote.

If that had actually said "Democrats have been doing it for just as long", then yes, citation would have been needed.

One of the key technologies powering slashdot is something called "Edy Tors". This powerful system ensures that you never have to search for a story ever again. Instead, all you have to do is wait, and the story will re-appear on the front page, as if by magic.

Keep in mind that this is a technology being pioneered by slashdot, and is not yet mature. Sometimes, stories get missed, and while the normal response time is within a week (occasionally, the system is so responsive, it activates within 24 hours), it has been known to take a year.

When you see such a story, please notify the staff immediately by posting a response to the story entitled "DUPE" (that is, "Detected Useful Post by Edy tors"). While mentioning chilled urine in the post is recommended, it is not required.

In this post you are also welcome to test the Slashdot Automated Abuse Detection System (SAADS), by cursing at the Edy Tors idle process (codenamed kdawson).

Your help in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Actually, TFS says he was shot in the car. For these to both be true, the cops would have had to have found a drive-through temple. I guess it would make confession more convenient.

Given, however, that the incident occurred in a Muslim area, finding such a temple seems unlikely...

Easy question. The pages aren't made with standards compliance or cross browser compatibility in mind. They are made to render correctly in IE.

  19. Re:Plaintext passwords? on Changing Customers Password Without Consent · · Score: 4, Informative

Wait, what? When was the last time you typed your password hash into a website? That doesn't mean that your passwords are stored in plain text.

When you change or set your password into a well-programmed website, it hashes the password (hopefully with a one-way algorithm), and stores the hash. When you enter your password in the future, it hashes what you enter with the same algorithm originally used, and compares the hashes, to see if they are the same. If they are, then the password is the same, or you've managed a 1 in eleventy billion chance at picking an entry that has a hash collision with your password.

GP is assuming that the mentioned institution uses this sort of password protection system, and when the operator asks for your password, they type it in and click "Check Password", and wait for the program to say either "Password Correct" or "Password Incorrect". This would mean that the hashes are being compared.

Of course, this is not a given.
