  1. "Short term outlook" on Music Downloading not Entirely to Blame · · Score: 1

I call this the "sales attitude". When someone is just a salesman and not a businessman, they tend to think "How much money am I making at this moment?" and not "How much money will I make in the long term?" This kind of thinking does not work for running a business. They have boosted profits since the last big dip in the early 80's, but in the process they have run the entire record industry into the ground. Everything is over-valued from concert tickets to recording equiptment and an adjustment is in the works.
Companies like M-Audio are leading the pack getting equiptment prices down. The internet is driving down the cost of distribution. Artists are getting rid of the middlemen and hopefully, when all is said and done, we will no longer have people making millions for saying "Uuuuuuuh" over and over again.

Also you can repeaditly stream a text version of War and Peace or some other lengthy book, with a counter on the recieving end showing how many times you have downloaded it. Keep a copy of the print edition on the table to show them what is comming down as the counter ticks away.

I remember back when I was a small tyke that Nintendo was acused of price fixing on their NES consoles. Alot of people will think "Price-fixing in consoles???" But they don't remember the days when it was just Nintendo (The Atari was old and not not a serious compeditor) and there was no competition. Nintendo was free to do as they like and they forced retailers to keep prices artifically high so smaller retailers could be forced to buy @ higher prices.*
Well, Nintendo got busted and as part of a setlement they agreed to a rebate offer for any customer. You called an 800 number and they sent you a $15 dollar cupon for your next game purchace. They also were forbidden to do this again and were watched closely. Microsoft wouldn't even have a crack to slide the X-Box into if Nintendo still kept an iron glove on the retailers.
Now days Microsoft is doing things along similar lines and using extra tactics to keep their product monoply. Imagine if Nintendo had never been busted, and did not allow retailers to sell other videogame consoles. They might have been able to keep their monoply and we would have the N64 selling for $300 today.
If I got any of this wrong then post a correction as I was quite young when this happened and I'm suprised that I could grasp the concept of price fixing enough to remember it all these years later.

    * If you have a product with a MSRP of $100, you may sell it to Wal-Mart @ $50 and to smaller stores @ $75. Wallmart could then turn around and sell the product @ the $75 that the smaller stores are paying and the small guys would never be able to keep up. When you make Walmart sell it @ a higher price to keep business of the smaller guys, you are price-fixing. This is illegal.

I am an authorized HP repair tech and they are a prime example of the downturn in product quality. Just the other day I worked on a HP Jaserjet 4SI. This printer and never been serviced and all it needed was the routine maintinance kit (fuser, transfer roller, paper pickup rollers). The amazing thing is was this printer had a mfg. date of 1992!
Fast forward to the next day. I have a client to whom we sold 4 new HP Netserver LP 1000r (HE wanted them, we only reccomend compaq servers). First 2 we sold him were of a batch where the SCSI cables were so cheap that if you disconnected them, they were hosed (HP Tech told me that). So when I installed the optional NetRAID controller I basically killed the cable (one died in service, we are going to go ahead and replace the other).
Now onto the 2nd batch we sold them. One of the NICs in one of the servers started dropping packets. Then is slowly degraded until it died completely. HP doesn't send out a new main board, they send the core module (mb & case. Everything but the procs, ram, and HDs). We transfered everything to that unit. Dead. Returned that unit, ordered another. That was dead too. Still haven't got this server fixed and we are back to working on it monday. HP doesn't have a clue of what's wrong, they just want me to order 5 parts on a warranty claim (there goes our proformance metric).
If you have ever used a DeskJet 600 series you know that HP is making some crap. Likewise if you have ever used a LaserJet 1100.
HP still makes some good products (plotters, high end LJ), but the difference between now and 10 years ago is painfully obvious. And, I suppose, the difference with other companys is the same.

  8. Could this keep Mozilla OUT??? on XP Service Pack Does the Impossible · · Score: 5, Interesting

According to this article, XP SP1 doesn't remove the apps, it just hides them. One of the FEATURES of the middleware hiding app is that other programs need to register themselves through a new API to be the default web browser or email client or media player etc... My question is will the API documentation have the same "Anti-OpenSource" clauses that MS has grown so fond of recently??? Would this prevent Mozilla from being the default browser??

Example: stuff.com points to 192.168.323.864 Your MX record points to 324.53.6.211 That means that when a browser goes to www.stuff.com, it goes to 192.168.323.864 When an email is sent to you@stuff.com, the smtp server (outgoing mail server) sends the mail to 324.53.6.211, on a completely different server. This way you can have the safety of email on a different server, and the convience of me@stuff.com
