Stick with the supported platforms, son. Dink around with your favorite distro on your own box(es). I've gone one dedicated FreeBSD 5.1 box and one dual boot windows/Debian testing box. I wouldn't think of pushing Debian branded linux in favor of something like RedHat. With RedHat or SuSE you've got a substantial corporation behind you. Not just the distros but the companies who support those platforms as well.

There's plenty of help on the internet at large, but they arent paid to have an answer to you in any amount of time. They don't even have to answer your questions at all. In fact they could simply call you a tart and a fop and go frig yourself or something strange like that instead.

Evangelize Linux, to be sure. But stick with what's supported. You'd rather have IBM or RedHat to point a finger at when it doesn't work rather than sitting on your thumbs and trying to explain to your boss once again why Debian was the superior choice.

    Meh... open mouth, insert foot...

True enough, the hash function's fine. :) It found a clash but it was the same record. The actual request times were more than 2 seconds off. So the second "clashing" record gets kept. All four servers are ntp synched, so I am (almost) sure that they are never more than half a second apart from one another. It'd been quite a while since I looked at the code, forgot that the second test was time, and then byte-check. Time's are much quicker to compare than an entire string. In all cases the times were always different.

  8. Hash Clash is nothing new. on SHA-0 Broken, MD5 Rumored Broken · · Score: 3, Informative

I find clashes "ALL THE TIME" with MD5. I wrote a scriptie that does some data munging. It creates specialized logs ("clickstreams") of my employers public website. It takes input from four separate log servers, two, and then two redundant. To avoid logging the same thing twice it does an MD5 on some of the data. If the MD5 is different, great, keep the record. If it is the same, it does a byte by byte check of the strings and if the strings are actually different it keeps the 'new' record and increments a 'clash' counter. Clashes are still fairly rare, but I get about 2 or 3 a week at least on around 20-30 thousand records per day.

"HashClash" has been around since the first hash function was written. :) You got 30 items and 20 buckets? You're gonna have to either stick two things in a bucket, or get more buckets (larger hash domain/more bits).

Right, tell me what restaurants are using recycled oil please. I'm not eating there!

I worked through college at a Hardees (Carl's Jr. in some parts). We filtered the oil once, maybe twice and put it right back into the fryers. Once it started smoking, or was too dark, we dumped the used oil into a special oil dumpster on the lot. Once in a while a recycler would pick it up and we'd get paid maybe $50-100 for about 150-200 gallons of used oil. It is generally used for things like cosmetics and soaps after heavy processing.

One night though somebody broke a board out of the back fence behind the oil dumpster and stuck their hose in. They freaking STOLE the oil. It was one of the oil recycle trucks too! Talk about ballsy. I'm not sure it would be worth stealing, but apparently it was to somebody.

The point is somewhat garbled, and there are really two issues here.

First, is the copyright itself. Second is the method of distribution.

For the copyright, certainly the RIAA has every right to defend that. Never has it been so easy to make and distribute copies of works as it is today. It's so easy that the only cost to any individual is maybe a small twinge of guilt, if that!

I don't think the CD is dead yet, there is plenty that can still be done with it. One is lowering the price, SIGNIFICANTLY. The other is add extra value content, like the secret websites that can only be accessed while the disk is in the drive.

Suing won't work, bending to keep up with the market will. Probably the best thing that the RIAA as a whole can do is create a place where any RIAA title can be purchased, unencumbered, for a reasonable price.

I think each member trying to put up its own system of sales and protections won't work. They don't act as individuals when approaching congress, why act as individuals when selling music in a new medium?
