They why not try to raise the living standards in those countries. Don't you think that if we vaccinate them for AIDS and leave them to be the way they are, we are not helping them that much. For them there will always be "another AIDS", it could be an STD, it could be Malaria, or substance abuse of just starvation. Finding an AIDS vaccine will make some drug company very-very rich. And then when another disease comes, some other company will become wealthy and so on, but the people who suffer the most will still be living in the same conditions, just dying from a different disease.

Why not develop a vaccine now, to give to the people while we try to raise the standerd of living in these countries. right now, disease (including HIV/AIDS) are one of the big problems leading to bad living conditions (either directly or indirectly.)

Furthermore, it is important that we continue to work on vaccines against difficuilt viruses, because, if we get good at making them, we will be able to prevent outbreaks that cause this much havoc in the future. And make no mistake about it - HIV/AIDS very nearly became a huge catrostrophy (not that it isn't already bad with 25 million dead)[2]. [1]Raven et. al. Biology. 7th ed. 2005. McGraw Hill. [2] TFA

So what happens when we hit peak uranium? There are two major uranium isotopes, only one of which is suitable for use as nuclear fuel. It's also the one that there is the least supply of.

there is also thorium, which is very abundent and can be bread into U-133, which is also fissionable. of course, this does raise the same proliferation issue you mentioned with plutonium.
thankfully, there are new power plant designs being researched that could make this irrelevent. the overall idea is to burn all of the fissionable fuel in a reactor, instead of leaving it to the terrorists. hopefully, these technologies will prove themselves to be useful (the Heavy-metal core should also be able to burn current waste, reducing the time of storage to just a few hundred years.) if they do, we should not have any problems getting our fussion plants developed.

our current energy situation does not concern me as much as perhps it should. there will always be engineers searching for solutions to the world's problems. what does concern me is the patern that i have seen in politics lately. we only seem to concern ourselves with energy when its a problem. this makes me wonder if we will ever get fusion to work, or if we will stop research when alternatives are found (fission, solar, wind, biomass, etc.) i mean, under Clinton, we stoped funding the aquatic species program when gas prices were good. i also fear that the anti-environmental movement (what i call all the non-stop attempts to discredit "Green" energy solutions before they even evolve) will stop or slow down possible breakthroughs that also happen to be enviromentslly friendly.

No, that is not the only reason. Another reason--the one that I spoke of in my post--is that people who hate Christianity are using evolution and the scientific community as tools in their attack against Christianity. It does not matter at all to these enemies of Christianity that the very sources they are using are Christian sources. What matters to them is that they can exclude or eliminate the reference of God from public discourse.

The legal system isn't intended to be anti-Christian, either, but the enemies of Christianity certainly try to force that use!

I cannot speak for all atheists or non-christions (althogh i am sure that these are the beliefs of the ACLU) as there are a lot of people out there, and it pains me to see some of the anti-religious posts on this and other boards, and i doubt that you would make excuses for those who think that everyone should be forced to convert. however, i can tell you, as someone who supports the kinds of actions you are misrepresenting that i would never seak to take away a person's right to express their own opinions or their own religion (nor would i seak to keep them from practicing that religion).

I think that there is mostly a miscommunication between parts of soceity that make for a very heated culture war. one of the man miscommunications involves the issue of seperation of chuch and state. i (and i've heard members of the much hated ACLU make simular statements - after i formed my opinions btw) believe people are not really free to choose and excersize their religion when the state officially endorses or denounces any religion (including atheism.) The things that are challenged, if you notice are cases where shcools, teachers, or laws attempt to force religion on people. Just so you know, the ACLU has sued over students being disiplined for excercising their right to express their religoin.

the real culture war, as i see it (between moderates) is about where the line is drawn as far as the goverment forcing religion on the people (or denouncing it). the atheists/non-christions tend to believe the line has already been crossed, and that forcing people to acknowldge the existance of any god/goddess/deity crosses that line (it would also be crossing that line to force people to deny the excistance of any god/goddess/deity).

it is my opinion that these stickers constituted an attempt to discredit a scientific theory by way of belittling it (the word ONLY is the really objectionable wording, although, if the district bought decent books, evolotion should have been presented as a theory, and reminding people of that is, itself an attempt to belittle the already stated theory). furthermore, these stickers, being implimented by a branch of the goverment, were an attempt by the goverment to influence peoples' religion.

This attitude of "why do they call us [blank] when we are really doing [blank]" seams to be a problem in the US. remember that these people do not always have access to the best or true information (many American's are the same way), but everyone can only act on the information they have. and, if the information you have all points to "America (terrorists, invadors, etc.) is bad", then that is what you tend to believe.

i have not read the while post (reading at midnight,) but it sounds like all the ideas of how to get the xxAA only accomplish half the task. What we need to do is to cause:
1)the xxAA to issue C&D letters over data that is not theirs.
2)a public backlash against the xxAA (maybe even the DMCA, but that just wishful thinkig)
3)the xxAA to give you an excuse to sue

I propose that someone start up a web site that writes and accepts reviews of movies/music/whatever. The reviews can then be tarballed into (movie|game|artist/song)name.tar.gz so that users can download all the reviews about whatever at one time.
When the xxAA's bot sees these files and sends the C&D letters, you can accuse the xxAA of trying to shut down people who say unflattery things about them (you didn't think these would be good reviews, did you?). The xxaa then opens themselves up to lawsuits, because of the potential damage to you (maybe the ISP will shut you down, or, better yet, the xxAA will follow up on their threat). when this happens:
    1) you have further proof of the xxAA's monopolistic (sp?) practices, and their hatred of the consumer, etc. to wave in the public's face.
    2) the xxAA has just (accorging to a previous post) violated the DMCA, because there is no real reason to believe that these files contain whole games, movies, or songs or whatever (yeah, right judge... i fit the whole 3cds of this game into a 100K file...) these C&D letters even give the size of the file in question, and a 100k file should not look to a person like a violation of any copyrights.

a couple of the relevent parts:

    - killing, like sex, became a part of an underworld when it was pushed out of peoples' regular lives.
    - he makes a point that training simular to violant video games is used to give soldiers the ability to overcome their built-in resistance to killing. it is important to note here that he does NOT say that video games make people kill, but rather that it gives them the ability to kill, but he makes a point of saying that it still takes a trigger to get these people to kill.
