I guess they are trying to compensate for the huge differences between recording quality in the videos people submit. Some are loud enough, others are very low and you have to turn the level way up to understand what people are saying.
They could simply normalise the level, but if you have a speech with very low level and the guy drops the microphone in the middle, that one peak is so loud that will make the normalisation process useless.
But compression is such a complex and subjective issue that it should be performed by hand. I guess they have an automated process for that, and it doesn't have any intelligence, just steamrolls all the audio it finds, whether it's speech, music, or anything else.

I stopped using voicemail long time ago, simply because people are too stupid to use it effectively.

    • After a meeting or something I would have 10 empty messages in my voicemail. Since I had no way to know they were empty I had to listen to and delete every single one of them.
    • Everytime I left a message in someone's voicemail the person would either not listen to it or, even worse, listen and ignore. This, even for important/urgent matters.

Many times I have proposed buying tools and I always get a "No, we have a Microsoft partnership, use Visual Studio!". Even an Eclipse plugin costing a few tens of euros is not allowed. So I have to waste my time jumping through hoops to get my work done. This because the M$ sales guy convinces the bosses that VS has all they will ever need.

The same for training. The PHB will most likely frown at the idea of spending 1000 euros in a training course. He prefers to have people working for a month to learn some new thing, and still using it poorly.

In my country (Portugal, EU), the power supplier has the option of a bi-hourly tariff. You pay more for the power during the day but less during the night.

I bought a bunch of timers for my heaters so they only work at night and only turn on dishwasher and clothes washer machines at night, before going to sleep.

This is a relief to the supplier because it flattens the power usage around the clock and it's good for me because I pay less for electricity.
