Lock-in has worked pretty well for several companies (e.g., Apple). I'm afraid you need to give a specific example, as their examples of practicing lock-in (PlaysForSure, etc.) aren't so glaringly notorious as that.
You most likely will turn into one of those people, regardless of what large city you're from. I'm originally from Louisville (yes, where the Kentucky Derby is held) and the differences between living in Louisville and an urban area are incredible. I guess what will make the difference is whether or not you're the sort who will say all that stuff out loud.
I'm with you there. I'd heard of Dr. Who before Tennant but had barely seen anything of it. His wacky-but-wise take on the Doctor was part of what got me into it. Now I've watched quite a bit of the older series too. Tennant would undoubtedly say that it was how good the whole series is that won me over, but if he hadn't been such a great Doctor the show wouldn't have held my interest long enough so that I would want to watch any of the older stuff.
And it just seems WEIRD for the next Doctor to be played by an actor who is 11 years younger than me! Like another poster said, it's appears to be getting dangerously close to being one of those "only the young and beautiful allowed" Hollywood-style shows.'Course, Tennant is considered to be hot as hell too, almost like Johnny Depp over here. Let's hope it doesn't devolve into that.
Games. Adobe programs. Working 100% at release. That's what I want, and it likely means beating Microsoft. Or, beating Adobe to become the industry standard in its arena(s), then still beating Microsoft to bring in gaming. Either way.
Hahahahahahaha!!! Sorry (*ahem*), but what you apparently want is to live in a fantasy world. Almost no software is ever 100%, and virtually never at release.
Why the hell should we have to? I prefer having a choice. Windows users have plenty of choices when it comes to desktops -- Litestep, emerge, talisman, Aston and many more -- so why shouldn't Linux users? Simple answer: NO.
It comes down to this summary: Windows users are not used to choice, thus, don't give them any. Market linux to them as more secure. Be honest about some devices not working, explaining that the Microsoft marketing machine is simply more powerful, but Linux will get there someday. We should be able to point the average Windows user to "Linux", a single cohesive product.
Clearly what you want is Mac OS X, not Linux. So use it instead of bitching that Linux isn't what you want.
Because when people are screaming "think of the children" they really mean think of the parents, as most of them are parents who seem to want to force society as a whole to help them raise their children. It is rare to hear the think-of-the-children people mention the parents and their responsibilities; no, it's usually someone else they're pointing their fingers at.
If people own guns, people will be killed by guns. If people have no guns, they can't kill their family by mistake when thinking being in presence of a criminal or when being drunk. If people have no guns, children can't take them at school and kill other students.
"He who lives by the sword will die by the sword." You make it sound like that if we get rid of guns, none of these particular violent scenarios could ever take place, yet we know they took place many times over the millenia before the first gun was invented. In addition, violence still happens in many countries where guns are heavily regulated, such as Britain.
I always get fed up with these anti-gun arguments quickly. There are fewer gun-owners in the northern US than in the south and you can see the difference. In the northern cities, the criminals own guns and use them to keep the people in a bondage of terror to protect their profits and deter witnesses from testifying against them, such as with the infamous Stop Snitchin' campaign. I can't imagine that happening in the south, where more regular people have guns. The whole idea is actually laughable. If gangsters tried that in the south -- threatening witnesses with getting shot -- they'd be the ones who got shot. Probably before they even finished making the threat. Hell, I live in Kentucky and I can't imagine anything like that happening here.
By the way, most states regulate gun ownership, some quite heavily. It has done very little to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. This is probably not what you thought was going on over here, as so many people outside the US seem to have this mythical vision of the US in which everyone owns a gun and has shot someone at least by the age of 13. The problem is that we live in a violent culture, one that has been getting more violent ever since World War II, it seems. Hey, come to think of it, it was after World War II that the US military became involved in every conflict around the world, often against the wishes of the common people or large portions of them, culminating into outright invasions by the 90s. Maybe there's a correlation there; violent government and military and violent culture.
Many would have you believe that. "If you're not looking at our ads you're stealing from us!" To which I say, bullshit. Just because you're advertising something doesn't mean you have the right to shove those ads down my throat. I reserve the right to not look at your ads if I don't want to.
6) There are many, many diseases around today that didn't exist before Neanderthals went extinct. He would be so vulnerable to modern disease that he would have to live in a plastic bubble.
And congrats on being the only commenter who actually thought this through.
Caveat emptor I say, but a lot of people aren't interested in doing research and make informed decisions, they'd rather believe the companies selling them this stuff, or the sales drones at the local big surface shop.
While I agree, I think you've missed an important point: by law, they're not supposed to have to.
Yeah, because all minimum wage workers are sooooooo stupid. Why, they can't figure out how to operate a regular phone. If the building catches fire they'll probably just stand there and burn to death rather than call for help. It's common knowledge that they're so dumb that they can't drive, read or write, tie their own shoes, and they have to be reminded to breathe occasionally.
Or maybe you're just an arrogant snob who really needs a reality check. Newsflash: a lot of those minimum wage workers you so pompously denigrated with one insulting generalization are students -- yes, even the older ones may well be students more often than you'd think -- and a great many of them have higher IQs than you or probably anyone you know. Just because you've apparently had someone give you a break so you never had to take one of those jobs doesn't mean everyone else is so fortunate. Other have had to work for a living while putting themselves through school. They didn't have Daddy set everything up for them so that they didn't have to take a menial job.
Yes, I know a great many minimum wage workers don't do a great job at work. That's often because they don't care to, since they're still treated like crap by both managers and customers even when they out-perform circles around their co-workers who come into work hungover and try to sneak in some tokes during the day. In most cases, there's very little future in addition to being treated like you're the scum of the earth, so why bother? After all, as you so aptly proved, even when they do a good job despite the lousy pay, the mistreatment from managers and rude customers, they're still going to be treated by crap even outside their jobs by jerks like you.
Have you never heard of "theft by deception"? If you claim your OS is going to work on this hardware and it doesn't, then that is theft by deception, i.e., you deceived me into buying your OS. Sure, folks who bought a computer pre-loaded with Vista and it really wasn't Vista-capable paid a lot less for Vista, but they still paid for it.
I don't have a machine to spare right now to experiment with. But I always upgrade the hardware every summer, by which time Lenny should be a final release so I'll try it then.
Pardon my off-topicness and my old fogieness, but I still can't help but laugh when someone says "excellent installer" in reference to Debian. It used to be the absolute worst and was known far and wide for being the absolute worst to do a clean install with. I remember printing out installation instructions off the web that were 8 pages long with a regular-size font! Followed those instructions to the letter, made sure I had compatible hardware, the instructions were written by a dev and were linked to from debian.org, only to have the installation fail. Tried again -- I'm an exceptionally stubborn person, I've been told -- failed again. And again with a different set of instructions. Tried again with the next release with a fresh set of instructions, same result. Posted in forums to get help, but even the Linux "gurus" whose only answer to Linux newbies is RTFM (since they're gurus, you know, they shouldn't have to answer questions from those beneath them) even they just made sympathetic-sounding posts that praised some other distro (in other words, these self-proclaimed gurus couldn't get it to work either). That's a big part of why I haven't installed Debian in at least 4 years now, and they were almost 3 years behind when it came to installation then. After those nightmares I find it hard to believe it has changed that much. Once bitten, you know.
right up until companies stop investing in producing the newest games because everyone turns a blind eye when their work is stolen and exploited for profit
Why should I care? I'm among a growing minority of people who don't buy games at all anymore because we're sick of being screwed over by game companies and their DRM-coding henchmen. Ever hear of Starfoce? SecuRom? If not, look them up before you start defending those poor, poor game companies. Of course, you probably work for them and think they're incapable of doing wrong no matter what they do.
Not to mention the paid ones who pretend they aren't.
It would've been better to leave the statue up. It would have served to scare away giant cockroaches and other crawling insects.
Get real, everyone knows there are no women on slashdot.

ME. Vista is still in 2nd place compared to the Millennium Edition. I know, I've used both.

Well, if you want to point out the obvious....
If you had one, maybe you wouldn't feel the need to be an asshole to a woman on an internet forum for no reason.
Yeah, I don't know what I'd do without mine.
Hahahahahahaha!!! Sorry (*ahem*), but what you apparently want is to live in a fantasy world. Almost no software is ever 100%, and virtually never at release.

You'll just have to pay for the pizza. See, IBM holds a patent on splitting the check. Honestly, they do. Don't worry, I'll pay next time. Promise!

Your internet connection has hit points?! What does damage to it, trolls?
Aliens will be hacking it left and right.
