It'd be nifty to hack something like this to hook in with something like an MP3 visualization (smellization?) plug-in to change the smells based on the characteristics of the audio.
I would love to see a CompactFlash slot put into an iPod mini. 4GB of HD, plus the ability to swap tunes in and out on a CF card? Have a permanent core collection on HD, then "stuff you're in the mood for" on a 1GB CF? CF cards are getting really cheap these days.
I can see how this will put IBM in quite a different position with regards to its relationship with Microsoft... while I'm sure that their x86 servers will still be available with Windows, we're looking at a completely different scale of total revenue IBM will be "forced" into with Microsoft, and perhaps an ability to wean themselves off Windows and focus more on AIX and Novell (err, I mean SuSE) Linux.
When I lived in London, callers to a radio show were so used to hearing people deride Blair's lapdoggishness by calling the UK the 51st state that they thought there were actually 51 states.
Ability to fix problems...
One of the things I see mentioned all the time as a benefit of open source is the ability to fix bugs, or implement features that you need.
As long as that's allowed, that's enough to make Solaris at least compete favorably against the other commercial 'NIXes from the point of view of a fan of open source.

After all, you can't -funroll-loops in a tiny space...;)
"Regular people" won't pay anything extra for this... they'll only use it if it's done automatically for them. Perhaps it'll get thrown in with BluRay/HD-DVD on players, and then maybe it'll get phased in, but during that kind of a format change, you're not going to get Bob McCracken going to best buy looking for a progressive scan DVD player and looking for "MP3 Surround" on the spec sheet.

Besides getting mention in a mainstream publication, is there much new about the ability to route using open source software?
As for commodity hardware - besides Ethernet, you're not going to find much that's really commodity about line cards like are used in high-end routers. PCI/PCI-X OC-3/OC-12/OC-48 "NICs" aren't exactly commodity.
Some are really messed up, and some seem to be really grounded. I don't deal with performers directly, so I avoid the shrapnel, I guess.
I'm more frustrated with the kiss-ass bullshit people do in the name of being supportive. God forbid people tell someone they did a shitty job when asked.

My computer would be asking me to repeat anything I tried to communicate by yelling over its own leafblower noise levels.

HTTP conditional GETs combined with something like mod_gzip to compress the content would be nice.

I'd bet everyone would love a Hairy Palm in their pocket.
Oh, wait... this is Slashdot... they already do...

I have a day job at a major multinational tech company.
Come on... my employer cuts thousands...
Besides, hasn't anybody of worth left already?
I'm going to be buying 11.5g poker chips for some people who fancy themselves afficianados and watch World Poker Tour and the World Series of Poker.

Well, porting Tru64 to PA-RISC would have been silly because they're killing that off, too.
Of course, I think they should have just kept the fucking Alpha line...
What a load of crap!
See? Slashdot's bringing it all together. We can build the H3 reactor buildings out of ceramic!

They probably have Bryan Adams albums featured. :)

Well, there is an iPod for dummies...
Don't forget that since XORP is under a BSD-style license, Microsoft can embrace-and-extend and sell a version incompatible with everyone else's. :)

It's got to be incomplete without an animatronic bear playing banjo and singing, "It's a small world after all."
