Just because Apple is enjoying some sun(so to speak) why is evreyone on thier back. This is capitalisim, is it not? America is the land of massive corporate comglomerates, right? Apple has had 2 or 3 years at the top of the mp3 player market. All the big companies we love to hate came about the same way, and now congress is raising a stink?
A kid by the name of Bill once came up with a proprietary format and didn't let any of the others play. Now many of us here heard of him but congress hasn't done much but give mean stares. Now all the good little boys and girls can't run thier perfectly good video games on thier boxen. And sorry to tell you he is far from the only one
Does that mean that they should voulantarily step down, or does that mean they have basically created a massive market, were the first ones there and are making some good money because of it. Is't that what its all about?
And really I don't get what the problem is. Apple has DRM!! isn't that bad? Doesn't that mean you can't do certain things with it?
You can get the same songs from Napster or who ever that you get from iTunes, its not like they are the only ones that have the music. The iPod can play MP3 format as well as ACC. So I don't get it.
OOOOHHHHH I get it the other online music companies want in, but no one likes them. They like DRM too!! Napster only wants you to listen to music as long as your checks don't bounce, then they want your player to refuse to let you listen to your music. Maybe Sony's jealous that no one wants ATRAC or to buy memory sticks to buy their nice looking / working devices that break if you look at them too long?
But what does this all have to do with AAC? Jealousy my friends its all about the jealousy.
umm Insightful? Sure um ok. Well cable providers provide...... cable TV? ummm well ya they do don't they. So you think that they will give you internet with out TV, try it out, good luck.
Each person is responsible for their own actions, democracy, republicanism, *.ism will not change that. If you support something so dearly that you would expose your wife and kids to it then why do you cry with astonishment when it comes knocking on your door?
Would you get into a group or street gang get married make money off of gang life and be shocked when the cops came to your door.
Basically FP said it right he should have known better and covered his own dam ass. But you wouldn't want him to actually do it right would you? Maybe the FBI should have sent him an email or snail mail saying "were comming please delete your logs..." and as a democrat I can expect you to demand this type of governament the next exlection.... right ?
this man has a wife and child. Have you ever heard the maxim "Choose your battles wisely"?
I'm sorry to break this to you so harsh but this man was supporting his wife and kid not by flipping burgers or pumping gas but advocating anarchy openly. He preaches and stipulates what "The Man" can and will do but when it comes knocking on his door all he does is cry. He was the one who brought his wife and kid into this no one else, probably even tries to convice those close to him of "the way of the anarchist".
This is like a some one wearing gang colors in the wrong neighbourhood and being shocked some one shot them.
Who is the person who needs to know? The person in the car.... right?
You could have an indicator light and a device that gives a quiet humm (in contrary to the sound of a gas engine) that can also change pitch due to acceleration.
Why not make it embedded in the card its self? Kinda like the small 2" cd's you can get now but balanced on a card.
Maybe even make it to DVD speck to run on increasingly popular dvd drives? When / if bluray does anything you could back up most of you PC on a 2" disc.
Not to be insensitive of the matter but, how can Vonage be sued for not informing the customer of the 911 issues when the people who were(or were not) informed are dead?
Thats fine and all, now lets think about this for a second.
Lets just say for shits and giggles the whole world changes from individual boxes to basicaly a wireless keyboard/monitor/mouse. All the apps you can eat for one monthly fee. We would think Bill would charge a licencing fee per client to maximize his profits etc,etc.. Enter the world of thin clients.
Now lets say the company or group of, say screw M$ the developers will have to port because no one else has a CPU to run software. So they now have our buddy Bill G by the gonads.
Its much easier to divide an conquer in Bill's position because running diffrent OS's initally consumes much power(in terms of education, repair, etc) then levels off. So FUD is all he needs right now to fuel the machine.
While I know you are posting to contradict the "Slashdot extremeists" but by being one yourself you prove nothing but your own ignorance.
Could even do this with a couple of lines of perl but how about searching news/blogs/etc same time each day, do a text to speach and convert it to mp3? That would be cool, that way you could catch up on all those sites you wanted to check out but didn't have the time.
Really the only thing that is missing would be a standard or a special way of listening to web pages. The content is all over and maybe using skip to change the page would help. But definately a prospect!
I guess it could go both ways. If you see a $20 bill on the street and you pick it up, most evreyone has, does that make you an unethical person, well kinda. In this case it just so happens the owner, judge, jury, and executioner were standing right behind you when you did it.
What they should really do is fire their web site designer because that was a dumb hole to have especially for Harvard.
What I would really be conserned about is that they really don't have any proof that it was those 119 people that looked. So really it is Harvard's duty to prove beyond a resonable doubt that these students were the ones who loged in. This is not legaly binding of course but how can a school with the stature of Harvard point fingers and be unethical themselves.
I would just like evreyone to step back and think for just a moment. Are we saying / fighting this because it would get ThinkSecret out of a jam or because we want to change the way blogs are seen from a guberment perspective.
We should first evaluate the strengths and weaknesses and make sure those support the free speach that we have grown to love.
In short lets not start fighting until we know what we are fighting for.
I think what this will do is take the script kiddies that just talk and make them actually do it. Once they get that confidence that add to the people who code for OSS. Some will contribute for money only, others will contribute for reputation.
The best thing maintainers can do is make sure people can attain a rep, this way it will work better than money in most circles.
Why is a blog any more than just a bunch of people getting together to bitch about something. These people may even come up with answers / solutions to various problems.
IMO I think all blogs should be communities, this is why. Journalizim should be saught after and be the explicit goal of the person who is writing to be doing so for journalistic status. In the public domain all voices should be considered public voices because, you can't get much more public then the internet.
While I do believe this is enivitable as the internet is evolving we are wanting laws to govern parts of it. This can do two things.
If laws pass making blogers journalists
It will give much more responsibility to the bloggers
Bloggers would in turn be respected more and opinions would then be more likely to be considered 'valid' because of responsibility from point #1
Bloggers would then be pitted against other 'journalists' to see who is the most 'true' in their profession.
Blogging would suffer greatly as many would be timid to blog because of the responsibility and others would be kept down because of existing journalists already with status
If Blogs are not allowed to be considered journalisim
All blogs will be treated as communities and their content considered 'free speach'
It is left to the device of the reader the validity of the site
Sites may compete or even trash eachother as groups form
People will not be scared to blog / post or whatever their opinion with fear of some company suing them.
Lets face it people these big companies play a big role in all of our lives and some times we need to tell them how much they suck (even if they don't) but this fosters discussion (possibly Intelligent Conversation(TM)).
The world needs a stage and the Internet is that stage, we use this to vent, explain, help and hurt. These are all things that we do have done and will always do. Once we accept that blogs are free speach, we will really have more effect on the world by affecting it rather than preaching to it, then we will be much better off.
If someone / anyone on the net posts or distributes info / data / naked pictures of politicians then it is the politician that will be responsible to report these representations of his / her "campaign" in monatary values?
Cause if that is true then these poor saps are in for a heap of headache. How about if I write "George Bush Jr. is amazing and all of you should vote for him!!". Does that mean what ever these robes come up with as a dolar value for that it is comming out of W's pocket? How about if its mirrored? How about if it gets linked to, is it double? When does it become free speach?
I'm not saying I know any thing better then the FEC but should they not have a set of rules before declaring the entire fucking internet a campaign ground? What will happen if a guy with a domain descides to be a jerk and start up propaganda and make it look like they are making a campaign for politician "X"? If the FEC declares this was $100 worth of campaign then do they have to pay me H^H^H^ that jack ass web site the money? If so I could make a shit load of cash off of these suckers. Vote for Kerry, vote for Bush etc (I just made $Y x 2).
I havent even explored half of the possiblities, I think they just opened a can of worms. Not that I think net should be off limits from the FEC but have a clue what you are doing before you do this. If there are already a set of rules / regulations set up (other than the previous) then I apologize as I basted the FEC without reading them first, and if someone that knows what / where they are if they could post them I would be greatful.
Our peak electricity usage is on sunny days during the summer
I actualy found this comment intresting. The sun will heat up the roof and cause the house to get warmer right? Then to keep your house cool you have to pump more A/C to compensate and keep you house a an acceptable level, right?
If the panels are absorbing the light and sun radiation then it would seem even more effective wouldn't it? Right now it does not seem that type of senario was worked into the equation.
Maybe we are going about it the wrong way, many seem to be trying to fit a round peg into a square hole by hoisting solar as a do all technology. How about if you would have a set up that certain appliances were directly connected to the solar power intake. For example your washer / dryer and possibly AC/Heat(they wont likely be on at the same time) all powered off of solar. You lights computers, TV's etc will still run off the grid but imagine the relief by developing cells to take the biggest burdens off of you. Of course you would still be able to run these devices off of the power grid in the case of malfunctioning cells or extended periods of low sunlight.
Bill has Media Centre Edition which you have to put together a box which looks like a computer rather than a media console. Then you are the one stuck when it gets errors and what not.
Also on the codec front IPTV is the M$ baby how about if evrey one gets an Apple-TIVO whatever and apple uses their own codec? Supply and demand kicks in. M$ might have deals with the codec on paper but if no one buys a device that supports it do you think all the movie / TV houses will stand there with their hands in their pockets?
Alot of the big guys see something in DVR's and TV's because with more bandwidth becomming availible and more devices they can provide it.
The only thing with Apple is that they deliver not just an EULA but a product. And I will bet the farm that Apples device will not only look amazing but work, take punishment and you will have a person at the end of the line willing to help you for free (unless you did something stupid). That's what the diffrence is but until the press release I can only speculate .
I'm gonna let the TV,**AA's in on a little secret.
You cannot force people to do something they do not want to do. Now when not just a handfull but tens of millions of people are actively looking to rip you off you are not going to fix it by making new laws. Its about time you guys sat down and thought this over again and came back with a solution rather than threats, because obviously its not working.
And really we know you were gonna use DMCA with the flag but how about if evrey one did it any way? When millions of people tell you to stick it what do you think the governament is going to do after a while? Throw all of its tax payers in jail over a $30 DVD or sigle episode of SG1 or tell you to shove it?
Obviously there are alot of people who are willing to take it that far so it might be a better idea for you to get on the technology bandwagon and start moving forward.
The manufacturers are craping themselves right now. When any new product comes to market it takes a while to adopt. Now for a small modification of the broadcast flag millions of TV viewers would have to be forced to adopt these by buying it themselves or renting from their cable company.
Now from a manufacturers point of view where millions of people are forced to buy a product over a relitively short period of time, they see it as payday. But if the flag never comes into play they are all left with their dicks in their hands with mountains of these boxes waiting to be shipped to people who won't buy them.
The manufacturer won't release them, to take up store shelf space? Pay monthly to sit in warehouses? They get put in the 'back room' where they don't get seen until you the customer have been force fed the boxes again. I bet TV studios are having a coniption fit because they have been spending millions to prepare the broadcast to have the flag, and it will go unheard.
This is good but the pressure will be on over the next year as there has been alot of money invested into this so far. The good thing is that if it does fail there will be so much money lost nobody will give the TV Studios the time of day unless they pay the lion share and they get the customer back by selling DVCR's and the like.
Come to think about it, this is going to be something we are gonna tell our children about in 10 - 20 years when todays (yesterdays) descision will be sitting on their tv in 20 years, and we will be telling them that once we were able to be fans of shows record the same episode and watch it over and over again.....
One thing I don't understand is why is Apple giving a blogger with no intentions to write software for them a peek into a new OS?
Isn't that kinda like GM stopping by a highschool telling the kids not to say anything before showing them a sports car?
I don't see why they would do something as stupid as that./. has brought up a good point, if you and I sign an agreement and I forefit where does the line get drawn? The law provides us with way too much leeway in terms of how much we can get for breaking an agreement.
Now I know many will say they need these laws to keep their business safe. Well maybe if the laws were changed you would think twice about giving your information out. Then again you may think and find that the information you have isn't really that good/important and there is no/acceptable risk giving it out. What this does is introduce the element of risk. Nobody has to determine risk any more just hire a bunch of lawyers and sign evreything, its like a the American motto now a days.
I think what it is doing is making businesses lazy and also from a mental point of view is damaging them. They spend all of their time in a 'box' blind to what evreyone else is doing with the feeling of confidence that no one else is doing the same thing. But there is no guarentee that they are unique and get slaughtered when time to market hits because evreyone has the same intentions and ideas as you.
So I do think this kid should be punished by not being alowed to be part of privilaged information at least from Aple anyway, and possibly a small fine (in the order of a couple thousand) but I do in part feel it was Apples stupidity that gave this kid the knowlege in the first place.

We should take 2 scientists, shoot them straight into a black hole which ever one makes it back gets to make as many laws as they want.

Well an IPOD starts at 20GB how about a boot loader that lets you select the image?
That would be t0t41y cool knoppix/Looking Glass/Recovery/TFTP all at usb 2.0 speed = ultimate sysadmin tool!!
I guess it could go both ways. If you see a $20 bill on the street and you pick it up, most evreyone has, does that make you an unethical person, well kinda. In this case it just so happens the owner, judge, jury, and executioner were standing right behind you when you did it.

Kind of like data cryogenics. Encode your data today and when they figure out how to use it thaw it out ....

Well lets look at it like this. Lets say I'm 6'7" 250 lbs and I let you date my sister. You two go out and you touch her boobs and she freaks out.
If I beat you to a bloody pulp and break *all* of your bones does that seem right to you now?
Or maybe it would have been more *fair* if I just kicked you in the nuts?

But there is no guarentee that they are unique and get slaughtered when time to market hits because evreyone has the same intentions and ideas as you.
