Like a previous poster mentioned we just invented the light bulb about 100 years ago and now we reached a planet / moon halfway through our solar system. I'm pretty confident that NASA is just waiting for a breakthrough to make it worth while to send another one into space.

If you are that timid of the law rather than respecting it you deserve to live you life cowering under rocks and letting others say you can't do this or that. Acting like an asshole is very broad but if the lawyer was a smart person he/she would have pointed out that at least they had a job (maybe add 'dumbass' in there). The idea is that if you are unhappy with something and you want to spend all day talking about it to to a person or a crowd of people then those people have the protected right to agree or disagree with you with out recourse. Computers can be complicated machines but have you noticed that from their inception into our lives over 10 years ago people still claim ignorance like they are some magical being. This is why Microsoft et al can screw the end user around by leaving flaws and remotes in the OS becuase the consumer doesnt know any better and vendors make it complicated if they ask, to get them back into their cubby.
I think what parent is trying to say is if all computers were greatly effected then people would take attention and realize what they have been ignoring and start trying to find out what the hell is going on. That is when these viruses stop or at least only effect those who have been social engineered.
What I would like to know is, is the Microsoft version finding the same spyware in diffrent locations or finding diffrent types of spyware in the same locations? The reason I bring this up is for Microsoft to beat evreyone else by a factor of two just doesn't sound right. Not that it can't be done just that is was done.

As well using a signature based system one could send data out on any port and recieve chunks spread over multiple ports based on the packets signature and all ports are reserved for the same purpose (or we get first stab at low layer NIC access)
If done this way each request from your computer can be handled by a diffrent host (harder to track your usage) and each host can reply via a diffrent node. So basicaly it makes a simple web search look like a huge ball of fuzz as one request goes out and many return via diffrent ports / IP's.
I guess it would be like distributed torrent for service rather than files...

You could write a small java / C# / VBScript ap that just sends packets out or you could rig it to send SMTP (which records IP) which of course you will let it do. The main thing is GPS though. Cause even if you have an IP address you just get the location of the ISP not the laptop. And most likely if you have a DUN installed or using a local hotspot it wont help.
As long as the script runs *quietly* they may play with the laptop long enough to get a GPS signal and email your self with lat/long of the location. Since there is low over head to send it you could send one evrey 30-60secs with out drawing too much attention.
Having the manufacturer build this into the BIOS would be sweet!! with a pass lock and security like IBM has for thier laptops.

So now they have 24 months of you paying through the teeth for all the gizmos to make back the 200$ discount plus LD calls leaving your phone on and forgetting (even better if you were out of your area) etc....
Now when the hero enters the room Shadowmite says well you can save $$$$$ and use cell service as a fall back. The execuatives get the shakes.
The only thing I don't get is why cell companies are not fearing WIFI like the plague...
