For some one to not only target a plane moving at landing speed of atleast 300+ KM/h but also get inside the cockpit? May be on a bank but not during a runway approach. Oh and don't forget only the top half of the cockpit is glass in most planes. So this means the 'terrorist' must have been well ahead of the plane to get it inside.
Also on of the articles mentions in Cleveland the plane was aprox 8500ft in the air. We also have to take into consideration the cloud celling which currently is at 2000ft . So if there was cloud that day they would have been covered from the ground looking up.
So even if some how someone with a super duper laser pointer was able to place the dot with superhuman insane accuracy not just on the plane going 300Km/h (on landing approach usually 500+ on cruse) that person also managed to keep it inside the cockpit to make the pilots feel like they were being tracked? WOW that is pretty good.
Now they must have pretty good faith in the general population if they think not allowing others to puchace these lasers will make pilots safer. Its the people who have the same aptitude, that I would be worried about. Eventhough I doubt that was done souly by a steady hand some one should come up with some serious numbers because this sounds like someone is on serious drugs to accuse joe six pack for this.
Eventually evrey one will be using hi-speed internet. Right now most (+60%) of the U.S pop is connected to the 'Net' has email or a blog they are accustomed to. In the next 5 years TIVO like devices will be the most popular things since the microwave. People will be able to connect it to the internet using super high speed connections and recieve TV quality broadcasts from who ever wants to post it. Multi TB drives and bittorent like transfers will dominate and independenly produced on demand video will be the number one choice amongst joe six pack.
But the question is can IBM make the PPC chip cheaper then INTEL? Sure.
Can IBM make a rock solid server. Yup.
Can IBM twist linux and AIX to make a server OS? Yup again.
Can they make all of that lightning fast? Yup.
They take one technology that transmits a unique number over a distance. How vairable that distance is can range from feet to meters. But the only time its used is when it is handed direcly to the person inspecting it. So unless you want to get a tally of who is in a specific area quickly why would you even bother with it? Then out of the other side of thier mouth say "(Wraping in tin foil)May give travelers an added sence of security", huh why should it be insecure to begin with.
Now they don't even want their own country men's data encrypted to protect you as "Encryption limits the global interoperablilty of the passport". If security is such a consern then why doesn't the US, who will obviously be forcing theses countries to buy the devices from them to scan citizens passports include it free? Would that not benifit alot of people?
I'm getting my tin foil hat on right now, with a body suit being made...
Will they be selling the same chanells via POTS as you can get via coax or sattelite? Same price most likely. Once the POTS infrastructure is obsolete whos really gonna care? Theres a lot of questions but worth "Billions", not really or if so I hope their boots are bullet proof. Unless they can send some type of magical signal that is unique to copper twisted pair its all 1's & 0's. May be they just want to confuse evreyone into getting it or the few people who don't have ability or permission to use sattelite, which most providers have.
One way it could work is allowing independant broadcasters to send individual signals to your house for ultra low cost / specialized content. Only watch 10 channels then work out a scheme (99c/channel) or something like that, or even letting overseas into the mix that would make it intresting!
I would like to apologize for the comment, it was my own fault I did intend it to be direted to viewers and not you. I should have been more observant.
Thank You
Starbucks is the only place where a poor person with 10 dollars and funky hat can fall into the illusion of being mistaken for rich and powerful. The next time you pass by one check it out and ask your self are these people really the elite of society or are they just going about thier fantasy hoping someone will make that mistake. Maybe you go there for the same reason.
Concievably if someone was able to come up with a shop that was one better (i.e. 15 dollars to 'join') then you would probably be suprised how many people would be banging down your door step. It's not the coffee its NOT the service and the people who gothere are NOT rich and powerfull they just found a way of selling you a ticket to ride for 30 minuites at a time. Thats the formula...
Lets step back a bit and look at the problem. The malware/spyware does not have to be "installed" in many cases because of expoits. There will always be times when people will click an install link out of mistake or being plain gulible.
To break it down further you being the software developer know that if a signal (packet) or series of, gets intrepeted by your program it cant handle it and passes it off to the CPU with out dieing.
This has been discovered by a programmer and used to install programs that were written more poorly than the hack.
On top of it all these programmers are selling the exploits so evreyone has a back door to your computer. Oh ya and all of these problems are related back to explorer and the OS takes some of the credit.
If I was a business major I would almost begin to think they were making it both ways, as it seems that these 'holes' are left open for a long time and even when they are closed computers continue to be infected.
So my question to parent is if this is the case would you really want to give that company more monney to sell you a program that is not intended to fix the holes just 'try' to catch them as they attempt.
The people on this blog see this and that is why there is all this griping...
Where its illegal to 'possess any information which might be useful to a terrorist'
I always get a laugh out of these quotes. Ask youself a question, what information *would* be useful to a terrorist?
You think Osama et al are searching for the best bomb recipie? or ebay for deals on AK47's ? They have more weapons then some countries (like Canada, where I live)
But we are getting better unfortunately:(
But really what could they be looking for? Airlines that advertise "Unchecked entry and boarding" ? or maybe they are more intrested in how you break the lock to your house when your parents lock you out?
To put it mildly *any information* can be usefull to terrorists and to blanket the staement so vast is a joke. Realastically with the bankrolls they own and the people they know if there was information they needed you deleting it from a web page would not stop much.
Nintendo are moving into Japanese Animation, to produce movies akin to the likes of Studio Ghibli's productions
Maybe Nintendo is not as stupid as./ sais they are. Many posts talk about how Nintendo is with out story lines in their games and such. With the heart that Nintendo shows and the repeated voice of their prez saying how they are going to cause a 'revolution', would it be that hard to think that maybe they can successfully 'play' a movie with a console? Do you think they have the money / power / aptitude? yup
I guess we will have to wait to see but if they did it would be totally cool.
Well the Cryptography link seems to show that each DVD will have a reserved section for a microcode that will be used to decrypt the disc.
So essentially they want each player to have minimal or "zombie" like capabilities. Now I am just guessing but since BluRay / HD DVD tracks will be far too small for a standard issue "Sharpie" maybe new generation burners can be riged to 'black-out' that section or just impliment a 'jmp' / goto possibly that will skip it.
Its a cute idea but I give Jon 10 days after first release.
Shouldn't cellphone companies be making people aware of the hazards of usage?
I used to work for a phone company that did a recall on the Kyocera 7135 (apparently no exhaust was installed on the battery).
All I can say is that under your contract they wipe themselves clean of *evreything* that could possibly happen and it is then the responsibility of the user. If you ever try to make a case other wise they will refer you to your contract, store you bought it from (or likely in this case undertaker) and tell you to shove it or go though mazes of 'pass the buck'.
Trust me (or check *your* contract) they cover their ass nice and clean. Of course most companies will put on a good public face and say even though its not our shit we will be happy to tell you all how to shovel it.
Lets take a look at the habbits of the general consumer.
First it could be safe to say that many are 'price shopper' they wait until the price drops 5c below norm then they jump on in in droves wheater they are all the way empty or not.
Then there are those who will drive until the gas light comes on and get busted with what ever price they come across.
Now also keep in mind very few people are willing to escavate their property and get a god awful amount of regulation needed to install and operate a gas pump so you could pump gas while parked at lets say work, at the gym, or at you 'girlfriends' house:)
How about we find a way that 200 miles is good enough in a day and evrey where you park you get topped up?
It could work on a monthly billing system attached to your cars 'VIN' where for evrey x amount of charge you get statement showing where each was and for how long and even useful battery maintenence info. There could also be an email / SMS generated when the charge reaches a certain percent so you know you can get home on the charge you have and finish it there.
The battery only depletes as it is used so people with low usage will have low bills and other wise your bill is higher.
I think it could work, as long as it is a fully automated charge, parts to refurb the machines are low and the IQ of the person watching the operation is as intelligent as the averge gas attendant I think this *will* work
As for the batteries if enough money is pumped (no pun intended) into it you will be suprised how fast a solution is developed.
I know its not really the 'thing to do' but I RTFA.
What it is about is starting a repository where data about all companies can be stored.
As it shows in the article companies (i.e. M$) destroy all of _their_ copies of data and otherwise, meaning that if in the future there is a problem we will have no proof in a court of law those events occured(Those 'haloween' emails for example) By making a repository where we can keep them we will alway be able to pin M$ to the stake rather than letting them get away on technicalities
This will help FOSS as it will be a very good way to keep companies on their toes and know once something makes it to the public domain it will never be forgotten. And as well TFA also states that this case envolves ENORMOUS amounts of emails and other info that will most certainly be *DESTROYED* after the final judgement
If this data can some way be preserved then if we need it to show as an example of oh well lets say monopolistic behaviour, we can show it as we can all guarentee M$ will sweep that puppy under the rug as soon and as quickly as possible.
Is there anyway or program to run win32 to find this type of activity. Possibly a sniffer that would log data by the program that sent it?
I don't own any tin foil (right now) but this would seem like a nifty little trick that, leagally would be a piece of cake to impliment since no-one really reads the EULA's anyway.
Hey its Christmas right? Mine as well start finding out now.....
"The real reason why Firefox is not a threat is because People Are Dumb. I almost cholked when I saw this. Is this the same/. that rants on the **AA that suing and descriminating current / potential customers are "evil" .
But the only reason evreyone is not using it because... thier too dumb? Seriously that doesn't sound right. If we look at our understanding of computing as a planet you will know in the past 10 years even your grandmother has gotten an email account. There is a genuine intrest, right now the problem is that those of the 'old school' of thought think that a hammer is a hammer and just because one is red and the other is blue "why should I care?"
We are the pioneers...
The younger generation (0-25) is not only learning but also 'preaching' computers and advertising the inner workings and what each hammer can really do. Soon the 'tech bar' will be raised and the people who are strict web browsers will take place of the technophobes of today.
By that time there will be millions of 'techs' who use open source as their playground, like lego for a toddler. IMO I think as more people become intrested the more individual run business or contribution will occur, and the computers and gaming monsters of today will be mere components of other machines tomorrow.
Finally I think that firefox / mozilla / linux will plateau but the chunk will become dedicated (something like Mac) in time we will have more people susceptible and thats when OSS will fly apps will be writen with linus in mind and we emerge with mind boggling hardware devices that we can buy and assemble ourselves.
I agree totally shops all around here (Tor) have used dell optiplex's which are compact and are made properly. I have bought 2 P3/550, slot 1, 128 RAM, 8GB HDD, 10/100NIC. It cost me $120 CDN.
I now have it set up for my mother for word processing and internet. After a $20 RAM upgrade and 30 for a 52x LC CDRW Drive, the only thing it can't do is archive GB's of info and play doom3.
Now the question is that is the entire industry over priced or is it a question of quality. People evrey day have to put up with patches for what they see as an investment. People still are having a hard time believing that once they pay for something it doesnt have to work. We all have gotten the distrot family member calling us up saying "I just spent $1000 on a computer system pluged it into my $40/month high speed intenet and its sooooo slow???"
Now they call up the shop they bought the computer from, they say "You must have downloaded something, call Microsoft" You call Microsoft they guy tries to help by saying have you rebooted?, if so I can put you in touch with a person who will take $250 USD from you before saying anything"
Steve if you can here me your problem is passing the buck only gets you so far. We know you can make an OS that handles this stuff but you havent. People have lost faith in software dismissing them as selling snake oil, because if something doesnt work you have no one to blame but your selves.
Think about it Steve, long and hard, why do you thing OSS exists? because these people have seen what you have brought to the table and have put a comparible system together that can work. Where is Microsoft today? calling people theaves for taking things that really doesnt consern Microsoft but use it for leverage into a new market(DRM).
Steve as you may know right now you employ many of the most intelligent people on the planet. But you must remember that the intelligent people of the next gerneration will have a stigma of your actions and they will work against you.
Well you probably havent heard me and you probably will go around blaming the hardware companies, or "pirates" for your woes, I just hope you remember that you as a boss don't tolerate this action (passing the buck) from your employees, when we(public) hear this from you all the lingo goes to the background and people loose faith in your product as well as you but put up with you because you are _where_ you are.
Now with all the contreversy will they be safe once it all runs on RFID?
Or will we all be able to do the same just from outside the store ??
I completely agree.

At what point does our way of life change?
So far the **AAs have been suing and cursing but I don't think the number of people that are sharing files has really changed.
How many days. months, years will they wait before they fold? and is this the first steps towards true democracy and freedom where the majority rules?
Will it be the first direct 'war' between corporations vs evreyone else?
All I do know is that some one has to give and just too many people are using and *want* to use P2P for them to just stop.
