  1. Suing your own fans on Think Secret's Nick dePlume Revealed · · Score: 5, Funny

    From the article:
"Usually you would want to sue your enemies and not your friends," said Gary Fine, a Northwestern professor of sociology and expert on rumors. "I can't think of an instance in which a corporation would sue its own fans. I haven't heard anything like this."

Hasn't this guy heard of the RIAA?

  2. Re:Clearly Broken on Microsoft Just Wants a Little Look · · Score: 1

Not necessarily. I don't like OEM CD's as I think they are full of junk. I do happen to have another OEM CD that is non-vender specific. I install XP using those CD's and when they want a serial number, I give them whatever Dell or Sony or whoever gave me. Its worked every time. Yeah it might cost you $100 bucks extra, but at least you'll be using legit software without the hassle of OEM junk or the risk of running a pirated version.

I was reading the Slashdot summary and it notes that a linux version is being released along with the "requisite" windows version. It got me thinking... what impact would it have on the use of Linux if a highly anticipated game were released on Linux only? While it is obvious that it would be a poor business move its curious to think about.

No its not. Thats almost always the case. Several burners already on the market burn slower to a DVD-R than a DVD+R. TDK and Sony both sell burners that burn at 8x for DVD+R but only 4x for DVD-R. I fail to see your point.

Sure you can do it yourself, but do you honestly think that a majority of the customers are going to want to buy from a third party and try and fix it themselves? I consider myself to be technically savvy but dealing with small electronic devices (I've opened up countless PDA's to fix their various ailments) frustrates me.

From the Article: Some industry veterans blame Hollywood for the lack of progress in the online video market, because the major studios are reluctant to allow the digital distribution of movies, having witnessed the devastating effect of online music on the recording industry. What devastating effect on the recording industry? As far as I'm concerned (and many others), they are doing fine. Even if we assume their (RIAA) statistics are not biased in any way, there are other factors (read: stupid business moves like trying to shun the internet rather than embrace it and keeping cd prices high) that contribute to the percentage of decreased sales.

This is slashdot. Microsoft usually does not get a good rap here. Sometimes wrongfully so, sometimes rightfully so. There is no doubt that this windows will use more memory than XP and previous versions ever had by a longshot. But to call an OS thats supposed to be used 2-3 years from now a resource hog is rediculous.

  21. Shouldn't Make a Difference on PalmSource Drops Mac Synchronization in Cobalt · · Score: 2, Insightful

Right now there are two main players in the Handheld market: Palm and Microsoft. Most of those who are using a Mac are doing so because they arn't too happy with Microsoft's offerings. That leaves Palm (yeah, there are other companies, but none as strong as Palm). Sure its a pain in the ass to buy 3rd party software but I don't think it will affect them overall.
