I don't know why this is suddenly news, I saw a tv program on this, at least 5 years ago. They showed the cables and supports being fitted, and a few of the less successful methods too.
Meanwhile the law actually states that you must have a *fixed* red light light showing to the rear of the vehicle. Fixed means "not flashing". So these lights are only legal if they are used in addition to a standard fixed (non flashing) light. I don't see any cyclists with both, but many with flashing lights only, and sometimes they are fixed to the cyclists back pack not the bike. The laws are there for your benefit, so don't abuse them. Yeah I know that sounds cheesy and authoritarian, but you would expect standards to be applied in networking and electronics, otherwise all hell breaks loose. This situation is exactly the same - all vehicles must meet the standards, or none must. Do you fancy a situation where cars and trucks can get away with flashing rather than fixed lights ? Because that's what changing the standards will result in. Preface this comment with "in the UK".
So you only created your content for the purpose of generating ad revenue then ? If the content itself is less valuable than the ads, then you may as well be a link farm. After all, when you first set the site up, you had no way of knowing how much(if any) revenue you would get from serving ads. Now, suddenly, your content is worth more, but not for its own sake (and is probably not worth any more to the end user).
Way to go ! Most people just don't RTFA, but you skipped a percentage of the words in the summary too ! "In a testbed environment where SOAP was managing around 900 calls a second, Etch generated more than 50,000 messages in a one-way mode, and 15,000 transactions with a full round-trip" 15000 > 900 Now do you see ?
If the back end of the bike slides out on a bend, and there's no way you're going to get it back up, you let go and push backwards. You do not ever want to be connected to the bike when it stops. And who ever said that "laying it down" meant you had to stay with the bike anyway ? If you can see that a collision is imminent, it is far far better to distance yourself from the crash, and that often means causing a back end slide, and ejecting while you still can. I have a friend who stayed with the bike after it went down and broke his pelvis in two when it hit the kerb. I have always practiced the safe eject, and so far I've never broken anything other than a patch of skin. there is no benefit to being "in control" of a bike when you t-bone a car, or a railing or a tree. You don't get to claim bragging rights. It's only a bike, it can be replaced. Believing you can control a crashing bike is asking for trouble and pain. Having ridden bikes since I was 16 (26 years ago), I think I know what I'm talking about. I've been riding 1000cc + since I was 20. The ideal thing is not to get into the situation in the first place. But once you're there, get away from the bike as soon as you can. I'm not suggesting you jump off at the first sign of trouble, but when you see the side of that car coming towards you and there is no where to go, lay it down and let go. You'll slow down quicker and the bike will take the energy into the crash. You may slide into the wreckage, but it's still better than being part of the initial collision. Of course if you have no feel for riding or situational awareness, then the accident will be over before you can react anyway, so just ignore me. Most people these days think that the brakes are the answer to all lifes problems, when quite often the opposite is the best solution.
DON'T DO IT. If you want to play with a server environment, get a mainstream linux distro and install it with all the web capabilities from the beginning. Then learn how to administrate it, install and modify php, learn apache control mechanisms, learn about chroot jails, even consider virtual servers (as in VMWare type of virtual). Then if you're still up for it, rent a virtual solution from somebody else, and play with it a bit more. The costs to entry are very low, but there is almost no return. Build your friends website by all means, but you're better off hosting it on a third parties hardware, and let them take the strain of running the hosting business. You still get admin access, but all the tools will already be in place. I've been doing this for years (8+) and I get more hassle from the users than from the sites. You need a call centre just to explain to people that there is nothing wrong with the site, maybe their net connection is down. Or they're not getting their email, because their isp is blocking it, or the page doesn't look right because their browser is still caching it from last month etc etc etc. I have someone who questioned why their site costs money each month to run. "To pay for the server" I replied. "Oh, I thought that once you had uploaded it, it was out there, on the internet" he replied. *Smacks hand to forehead* Oh, and if they want to offer downloads, then make it clear that they will be charged for bandwidth, over and above any monthly fee. Do not give shell access out like candy, and don't allow anonymous ftp. All in all, don't bother, unless you really are a masochist. By all means build sites for friends, but set them up with a host somewhere, and let them get on with it. 90% of people don't keep up with updates to sites anyway, and you get left with crap lying around on your server(s). I have 1 guy who bought a domain name through me around 6 years ago. He has never had a website for that domain. Every year I hit him for the renewal fees and he pays up, but it will never be a real functioning site. He is the best kind of customer. Beware of people who want stuff, especially those who think they know what they want. Overall, realise that this is a huge subject with many many intricacies that you find as you go along. Do you really want to go down that road, or would it be much better to take the blue pill now and forget about it ?
As do the mice who will choose provigil over food when given a choice.
... other than earning money to buy food. Seems like you demonstrated the problem right there. If the mice would rather take a drug than eat, and you think that earning money to buy food is an irrelevance, then I would quit the drug now.
If you had ever had a real full time job, then you would realise how ridiculous that statement was. I started work at 4 am yesterday, and didn't get home again until 8.30 pm. And that's just the time span, without taking into account the physical and mental nature of doing the job. I can assure you, there is plenty of time for sleep, because you will die without it. Work/school are choices, food and sleep are basic necessities. Ignore that at your peril.
So someday there will green skinned chicks sunbathing their way to ever better levels of physical fitness? The day I see that, I'm totally changing my name to James T. Kirk. But how will you know when they've gone off ?
What can possibly go wrong ? Does anybody really think that the discovery and propagation of voracious plastic eating bacteria is going to be a good thing ? Your pc could just fall apart, the keyboard will disintegrate, as will the mouse, the monitor, the power leads feeding the hard drives etc etc. Backup discs ? LOL. Sure they'll promise that it won't escape and only be used for good purposes, but that worked so well with cats in New Zealand, rabbits and dogs in Australia, and numerous other creatures in countless other situations. People hailed the invention of plastic materials for housing, because of woodworm and termites, and now we want to propagate their replacements. Looks like I'll have to build myself a steam punk pc out of cut glass or oak or something.
file sharing under the radar... You mean like it used to be ? It's funny how the more public an activity gets, the more the govt. feels the need to crack down on it. It's the same with weed. I've smoked for years, never so much as a sniff from the police. Then along come these leet young dudes who think that it's a good idea to actively flaunt their usage in front of the world, so actively forcing the govt. to step in. Grow up, fer fucks sake. We know it's illegal, they know it's illegal, so we honour their wishes and don't rub their noses in it, and in return we don't get busted all the time. If you aim for the quiet life you can get away with all sorts of fun things, and not bother anybody enough for them to bother you.
Do *you* slow down when you come up behind slower traffic ? If not, then you're in no position to criticize. No1 rule when driving a truck - keep it moving. If you have to slow down or stop then it takes ages to get back up to any kind of speed again, and guess what ? Some idiot complains about being held up behind a truck. Then overtakes, pulls in in front and jams the brakes on causing the truck to go even slower. Not to mention the extra fuel that slowing down will cost, which then gets passed directly on to you the consumer. In extreme cases, having to stop on a hill may put you in the position where you *can't* get moving again. That'll help the traffic flow ! Make your mind up, are we going too fast or too slow ? You do realise that the whole original purpose of the road was to transport goods quickly. The general public are relative latecomers and now they think they own the damn roads. Favourite trick of car drivers is to drive slowly at the bottom of a hill, forcing the following truck to slow down, then the car carries on at a sedate pace up the hill , while the truck has to change down three or four gears and struggle up the hill. And even if the truck gets chance to overtake, suddenly the car speeds up just enough to stop you getting past. It's all fun and games isn't it. Yes I drive a truck, stay out of my way and I'll do my best to stay out of yours. Unless you like having a pissed off trucker behind you with a 44 ton weight to throw around. That's metric tons BTW.
I drove past a bus in a car park the other day. The bus was painted with signwriting, proclaiming that "Jesus lives !", "He will return", and the like. On the door was a sign saying "back in 10 minutes".... Is the Lord indecisive ? Sometimes I feed him chicken. The Lord likes chicken. Maybe I just think He likes chicken. He appears as if he enjoys it, and in the absence of any other data I have to assume that He does like it. Maybe the Lord is a figment of my imagination too. So hard to tell.

Open source is likely to be a very good software environment when it is finished. "when it's finished" ?!?! The whole idea of open source software is that it's never finished. To finish it would be to close off innovation and hacking for special needs. The future is not to close the software but to open the minds of the users and developers. When they realise that they can adapt or write software for themselves easily then a closed system becomes a hindrance. My analogy for the difference between Windows and Linux/BSD is Windows is the Lost World, and the others are the natural world.
I was never on the side of increased surveillance, all the cameras going up was a sign of the screws tightening on the freedom of the public.
However...
I have recently come to a new understanding and belief. The only reason why CCTV is bad is because it is one sided, the govt. and the police have all the fun, while the average person is merely the subject. Well maybe it is time to turn that around.
I think that if everybody had their own method of recording everything they see and do, then the balance of power gets shifted back towards the centre. Very similar to the rise of education and then the internet. Originally, books were things that were owned and could only be read by an elite. Then Gutenburg gave us the printing press, and gradually education became an option then a necessity for all. Originally, access to vast amounts of diverse information was limited to those with supercomputers and the cash and staff to use them efficiently. Then came the pc and the internet. Now almost everyone can get access to vast amounts of information at very little cost.
So, maybe we should start to balance the surveillance inequities. If we all use cameras to record every activity that we engage in, and every activity that occurs within range, then we reach a point where the pervasiveness of cameras is no more threatening than having people walking past your house, or being observed by people in the street whilst out shopping. It becomes a normal state of affairs, and the feelings of paranoia regarding the govt. and police will subside.
Being in public means being open to observation. The way we all think society used to work (ie. less crime because you know people in the neigbourhood will act together to catch/stop you doing it) will return because you can no longer rely on the fear factor preventing people taking action against you. If you wanted to take retribution (as a criminal) then the number of people to catch up with would be vastly increased.
I have already started going down the path of universal surveillance by installing a bullet cam and recorder in my truck, which records everything that happens on the road during my working day. I have plans to make this footage public, and from there to encourage others to participate. Much like the old days where people were placed in the stocks for public humiliation, I hope we can start to humiliate those members of the public who routinely shit all over others while driving, often causing fatal accidents just to save a few seconds on their way to a shitty job.
This change of direction gave me relief from the 1984 syndrome, and I think it's truly the way to go. And much like the printing press, the pc and the handheld gadget, these devices will become cheaper and so more ubiquitous very quickly.
Maybe I'm insane, but then again, I remember being the only person with a mobile phone in my local pub back in the early '90s. Then suddenly the place was full of them. I remember being called the "computer guy" because I had a pc and internet access back in the mid '90s - now almost everyone has, or wants the same. Maybe I like to ride the wave rather than be drowned by it...
All things considered, not being able to edit is a good thing. "The animals will hear!" bellowed the ear licking penguin as the awesomely endowed midget sucked her oozing charlies and plugged his purple middle leg into her festering cunt.

You don't have to be Cuban to be resourceful. The clutch actuating rod broke on my motor home while I was in the Welsh mountains once. A visit to the local Ford dealer revealed that they no longer made the part, and scrap yards were a waste of time. So after buying a portable gas torch, a few brazing rods, a hacksaw and a bolt, I was able to braze the bolt to the end of the broken rod and fix the problem immediately. It was the strongest part of the van after that. Also, because initially I had to get from the mountains to the town where the shop was, I got the clutch working by stealing about 4 feet of wire from a fence, and winding it back and forth between the pedal lever and the clutch release arm. This I then tightened up using a screwdriver between the strands which was kept from unwinding by being wedged against the vans body. That worked for 3 days before I got to do the permanent repair. It's not hard to do these things, just takes a little bit of application. BTW, I consider this hacking in one of its truest forms.
