Clearly the article points to something akin to the Screamers from the 1995 scifi movie. wiki link

Five years into the war, Alliance scientists created a weapon called the Autonomous Mobile Sword, or "screamer". The artificially intelligent screamers were subterranean, self-replicating, crawlers which target and locate a life-form by tracking its pulse. The screamers are equipped with a spinning saw blade designed to kill by "leaping" from the ground and dismembering the target.

Spooky steps to a reality for "Autonomous Mobile Sword".

I heard the sad news yesterday, and took some time out of work reminiscing with folks about their time spent with the game (well the ones not afraid of being pegged nerds). I was going to stop by my parents place and see if I could dig up the old red sixteen page d&d book my cousin and I played back in the day. Of course if I was to dig for that then I would have to go bring forth the 2nd edition books my friend bequeathed to me and think of fond memories of THACo, lizard men, and EPs. I am certain I have faded and aged character sheets stuck in those books that should see the light of day... Sadly those books are underneath my 3rd Ed books where I was able to start getting a group together in college. That of course failed, and I just didn't have the time to game like I used to. Thankfully my Hackmaster stint was a few years back with a random group of folks brought back the gushing joy of tables, crits, and magic missiles.

So long Gary and thanks for all the fun!

I am talking about: teachers, lawyers, doctors, PR folk, accountants, service industry friends, and so forth. The only ones that appreciate the labor of love would be the architects.

Sir, I disagree. If it could happen in 1999 it can happen now. I also vaguely remember reading about another company, more recent, on engadget that was going to do the same thing but with compression and dual layered dvds.
