  1. This was on digg too... it's a fake on Xbox 360 Backup Discs Bootable · · Score: 1

These jokers didn't hack anything. This is a total fake. Their video is cut and there's another measure of security they didn't even mention. This is all BS. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure modding the 360 is only a matter of time... I just think the way these guys have been manipulating digg and slashdot comments says a lot. YOU GUYS ARE FAKES!

  2. Um... on PC Case Made Completely of Fans · · Score: 1

The first thing I thought to myself... (and then immediately spoke outloud...) is "that is the dumbest looking case I've ever seen in my life." I hate to post negative comments... but seriously...

  3. Pure Extortion on Apple Sued over Tiger, Injunction Sought · · Score: 1

The only reason to wait until the day before the software's launch is to increase the pressure on apple to either 1) abandon the name AFTER spending a small fortune on advertising or 2) increase the pressure on Apple to settle for an exorbitant amount of money. This amounts to extortion, and is highly unethical to say the least.

  4. Scruples? We don't need no stinkin' scruples! on Google Sues Click Inflators · · Score: 1

As a web designer, this fraudulent clicking has me concerned. I want to get on board with click inflation, and would really appreciate a "roadmap" that will help me increase my cash flow. I am not unique. There are many guys and gals just like me who would destroy the per-click-advertising method if given an easy and profitable opportunity to abuse it. Google is wise not to provide the details.

  5. Praying for Disaster on Asteroid 2004 MN4 May Hit Earth After All · · Score: 1

...* ...as if to say that a ball of rock running in to another is going to teach us something about gravitational mechanics. I think these lottery disasters are so well covered and revisited simply because there's a small part of everyone that wants to see Earth get shaken up. This is likely a symptom of sheer boredom rather than pure scientific curiosity.

  6. W3C to the rescue? on Web Design Hampers Mobile Internet? · · Score: 1

As a web designer, I would really like to see the development some universal (W3C) control standards. I'm not going to design simple pages for clients because simple pages look stupid, scare customers away, and give the impression that the client company accepts slipshot work. I just want a simple tag that I can use in the content and navigation portions of the page that will allow mobile devices to ignore the rest and includ a layout designed for lower bandwith and resolution.

So how about it, browser developers? Can you make that happen?

Never tip?! What kind of classless wank would say such a thing? Frank Sinatra said: "If you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to eat out." Service is not free. Good service should be worth a little extra. Clearly, you work for AOL tech support.

  8. No kidding.... on Where are the 'Modern' Directory Services? · · Score: 0, Offtopic

Of course this is a critical problem! If you want people to "switch" to Linux, than the new OS (that's Linux) needs to be able to talk to the old (their old WIN98 machine in the basement, their pocket PC, etc...). It also has to be easy enough for a highly trained monkey to install. If Linux can't do it with a basic install, the masses will NEVER come around. That's just reality, folks.

  9. Connotation on P2P Manifesto:Peer To Peer Study/Project · · Score: 1

Manifesto has a real negative ring to it. Let's call this thing "the titles of P2P"... thus altering the connotation from a crazyman's ramblings to that of a declaration of independence.

  10. Active X... Active Schmex on Brian Hook on the ActiveX Experience · · Score: 1

Yah... well I've written java applets and run DHTML scripts that will do the same thing. The moral of the story is, if your IE security settings are so low, you probably don't care what gets installed on your computer. There are a million ways to jack up a system off the internet... and only a couple of little things you have to do to put up a pretty effective defence.

  11. Super Volcano? on New Hominid Species Unearthed in Indonesia · · Score: 4, Interesting
I recently watched a discovery channel program about super volcanos ( Super Volcano info here)that might explain the demise of the Hobbits. Apparently, there was a bottleneck sometime in human history that limited our genetic diversity. According to Discovery, that bottleneck might have been caused by a volcano many thousands of times the power of any volcano we have seen to date. The biggest one they know about is in Yellowstone National Park, and is set to go off again anytime within the next 200,000 years. The theory goes that one of these volcanos erupted and wiped out all but 15-20,000 humans, almost wiping us off the face of the earth. Maybe it killed the Hobbits... and the Orcs... and the Gobblins...

  12. Halo: The Movie on Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Preview · · Score: 2, Interesting
With the convergence of the film and game industries, isn't it only a matter of time? I certainly hope so. Maybe we'll see Halo the movie come out in tandem with Halo 3! If they can get Milla Jovovich play Cortana, it'll be a box office smash.

  14. This reeks of corporate politics on MP3 Going the Way of the 8-Track? · · Score: 2, Interesting
I doubt very seriously that MP3 is going anywhere but on my hard drive. Changes in media formats have a direct relation to the added benefits the incumbent technology provides. AAC and WMA do not provide a significant improvement in flexibility or quality. The popularity of MP3 is a function of bandwidth. There are still people out there without computers JUST coming around to MP3s. From a marketing standpoint, MP3 is just hitting its stride. Here's the deal, from a marketing point of view: you were an "early adopter" if you downloaded MP3s off of FTP servers before Napster. If the Napster era was when you hopped on board, you are part of the "early mainstream." (Note to those of you not in marketing: the early mainstream crowd is STILL part of the market introduction.) Now we are at the very beginning of the mainstream segment of the MP3 'product cycle.' We are JUST starting to see MP3 incorporated into car stereos, home DVD and CD players, and walkman. However, I can still walk into my local electronics store and find the majority of players don't support MP3. It's a feature you have to look for, and is generally found on upper end systems. This is the EARLY growth phase of MP3 technology. As long as people are still coming on board and there's money to be made from electronics that support it, MP3 will stick around. Now that's just one angle from a manufacturing standpoint. Also consider how many people the world over have adopted a single format. No regions, no copyright protection, and total flexibility. Has that ever happened before, or on this kind of scale? Given this, one has to start questioning the validity of this kind of report. Gosh, do you think there may be alternative motives at work by The NPD Group's MusicWatch Digital? Hmmm... I wonder who cuts THEIR paychecks...

  15. All The Negativity... on Microsoft Bringing TV to Xbox · · Score: 1

Hay now, party people, this is not a bad idea. How many old game consoles do you have in your basement? I have many... all doing nothing. XBox 2 will replace my current console, so what do I do with the old? I think it's great that a company is finally giving people options post system obsolescence. ..and sure you can easily mod your system and run something comparable or perhaps even better, which many of us, as geeks, will or have done. However, the Microsoft machine is actually hooking up the average joe with an option a monkey (or even lemur)could handle. If the XBox Media Center add-on isn't a great answer, I gotta tell you, it is at least a great start. Now if I could only find someone to fix my laserdisc player....
