I wonder if there's a law that states what search engines can do as regards the contents they list. Surely, if they start blocking all "linux" sites or other competitor's and merely making it another showcase for their own products, wouldn't that be violating the basic internet philosophy of sharing information etc without any tampering?

Sounds like what RedHat is doing with their distro - RHEL is commercial while Fedora (previously called RedHat linux) is completely free.
The former comes with support etc and is good for enterprise-level work, while the latter relies on community support and is fit for Home and Desktop users.
