This sounds like classic Sony to me. Do note, I say this as a fact and not an opinion... Look at the original PS1 design with the ventilation on the BOTTOM of the console...or the way 1 in 10 or the first edition of the PS2 accidentally bumpped the laser's lens and DVD/CD against each other, ruining both game and system.....
They'll change it, it'll just take a few months. To call the PSP's design "perfect" is a fairly wrong use of that word too.
I'm sick of hearing people say this. Doom 3 is not a bad game at all! I think many people were expecting way way too much out of it. Doom never had very complex gameplay to begin with, so why would you think they would start here? Doom 3 was not intended to be some leap in gameplay, it is a grand re-telling of the orignal Dooms. I for one am glad that every weapon didn't have 3 optional firing modes. Simplicity does not make a game boring! I also have to say that I think Doom 3 has more in common with Resident Evil than it does Half Life 2...so quit comparing them, it's a completely different kind of game even though they both happen to use FPS as a control scheme.
I think you are very right. The same thing happens in the music industry. And many are directly due to money issues. However, in both vg-design and rock, people do tend to lose their drive as they go on. Most bands will peak with their very first CD and then each proceeding CD keeps going down and down in quality. Whether this is a personal, or a business issue? I don't know... probably a mix of both. And this can probably be said for games too.
Also, when you are just starting out, you have time to imagine all new ideas and dwell on what makes this game/song good and this one bad. Once you are actually in the industry and doing it everday, you kind of lose that focus....not always, but most of the time it happens. The only way to prevent it is to try to do something new and weird everyonce and a while...
I think the most interesting tidbit in this rumor is that the Revolution may actually come with a built in hard drive! Sony's already said they're not going to have one, and Xbox 2 is still iffy on it. I think the hard drive was the best feature of the Xbox and I'm very glad to see Nintendo having one too (if it's true).
It's really about time for someone to innovate (at least a little) in the controller field. There really haven't been any improvements since the N64 controller, except for analogue buttons, and we all know how amazing those were...lol. Games are getting far to complex for the simple controllers we use. It's no fun having to remember what all 22 buttons on your gamepad do...
To clarify. Real player for Linux does come with Ogg, but the windows version does not. The windows guys are the one's who really need the extra ogg support, there are hundreds of ogg players for Linux.
People have been downloading Mp3s since the early 90's though. It wasn't until around 1999 when Napster got really popular that any of the companies even noticed. The change is going to have to happen from the bottom up. Truthfully... Ogg Vorbis will really take off when all the ripping/warez groups start using it instead of Mp3. It's a sad way of things, but those guys are the ones that can really make the difference here:/
But that's just the thing... It's all politics. Politics do not belong in our schools. We Americans need to get over ourselves and start being real people again, forget all the politically correct bullshit. Seriously... This stuff is ruining our country.
Secondly, if every single parent signed a waiver, then the school has no responcibilites anyway. Also you have to think about the fact that Halo is rated M (17+), how many of those kids are old enough to play the game without their parents consent anyway? Halo 2 is not really meant for children in the first place. But, since the parents agreed, then it's up to them, not the school now.
The only way Ogg Vorbis is ever going to take off is if people start using them heavily and demand that it be included in their players. If everyone just waits around for it to happen, it never will.
I run a dool boot (WinXP/Gentoo) and have ran into the problem of Windows not recognizing my Linux partitions, and Linux not being completely stable writing to an NTFS partition.
My solution was to divide my harddrive into 3 partitions. I have a 120GB SATA Seagate. I gave Windows 20GB, Linux 20GB, and then made the remaining 80GB a FAT32 partition because both OS can read and write to it easily. I use the Windows and Linux partitions strictly for programs and use my 80Gig for all of my files (ie..audio,video,art,personal files). So far it's working great:)
Oh yeah... I totally agree. This is one of the dumbest things MS could possibly do. No peripheral EVER has had much support. In fact some statistics show that (this is a little old) some PS1 owners didn't even buy as much as a memory card for their system. That's why the Xbox's built in harddrive was such a great idea...oh well, Sony's already said they're not going to have a harddrive either....maybe Nintendo will have one? (doubtful)
Sony tried to pull this stuff right after PS2 launched. I was working at an EB around this time. They raised all the PS2 games to $54.99. But it backfired...sales weren't that hot to begin with b/c of console shortages, and then they dropped even more with the price increase. Although, the selection they had for the first 6 months was pretty worthless as it was, and that's also a factor. Anyway... after about a month or so, they brought the prices back down to $50 and started to sell again. At least this was true at my store.
"...and the lingering question of whether the Next Xbox will have a hard drive." (from article)
Hasn't that question already been answered a couple months ago? Xbox2 will have 3 versions. One without a harddrive, one with, and then a TV-PC type thingy.
The $400 could be true for the TV/PC...maybe? If they guy had said 3 different prices, I might have believed him... Based on that assumption, I might think that the Xbox2 without an HD will be about $250, with HD $300 and PC-edition $400. That would make more sense.

Xbox 2 for $400?

Actually. The Saturn launched at $400. Plus the Dreamcast launched for $200, and the Gamecube launched for $250 if I remember correctly. Been a few years...heh.
Nintendo's number one problem is their repeating failure to lure third party developers to their systems. Nintendo tries to rely on their own first party games to drive system sales, and it just doesn't work like that anymore. Everytime a Burnout 3, GTA, or whatever new game comes out for just PS2 and Xbox with no Gamecube version, Nintendo slips a little more.
The article I posted last week makes some good points too. Nintendo needs new franchises.
I too, very much hope Nintendo fares better with the Revolution next year.
I live next door in Mississippi. I'm in college here, and there's really not much for aspiring game developers anywhere near by except Full Sail in Florida. I wouldn't mind seeing game companies spreading out a little more, but personally... I can't wait to get away from the south!

Actually... if you read any of the Nintendo press releases, the DS is aimed at an older audience...

They were also the first game company to feature and analogue pad and force feedback in a controller.

Sorry if some of us are interested in personal freedoms around here besides just tech stuff...
People still use Kazaa?????? www.shareaza.com

Realplayer requires you to download a plugin for Ogg Vorbis and Theora files though. It's not built in by default :(

Read it again. It says MIDWAY not microsoft...lol
I agree. The sooner we move past the graphics race and start working on better gameplay, the better.

Umm... I was talking about the parent, not my post...lol
If you look at the screens, they call their system "BeFree" ;)
