Why not give these suggestions to the Elektra coders rather than bitch about it on a Slashdot thread? Isn't that the whole purpose of open source? And if you don't like it, fork off!;P
Think of it maybe like the difference between old Mozilla and Firefox. Firefox built upon the Mozilla code base, but was structured differently and a much better app. Linux could use the same...
Yes, Crytek, ID, Epic (Unreal Engine) and the like would all not be much for this ideal. BUT, it would benefit the game industry as whole much more. If graphics engines, physics engines, net code, and whatnot became public projects that anyone was free to use and contribute to, the quality of graphics and gameplay could rise expotentially. Instead of trying to recreate the wheel everytime you make a new game you could just take the open engines and add the new features that you need. This would speed up the development of games and lower your development time and cost greatly. And then the new code could go right back into the public's use. All the developer would need to hang on to proprietary rights for would be characters, artwork, music, etc; they are the actual meat of the game.
This is the problem with the modern game industry. People focus too much on technology, and not enough on the actual games themselves. If the latest greatest graphics engine was available for anyone to use, it would be about who has the most fun game rather than whose is the prettiest.
Open Source is great for games. Many people get confused and think that because you have an open source game, people can get it for free. You don't have to use the GPL to be open source. If they would just include the source with your game, and allow you to edit it for your own purposes, but not redistribute it, it would still be open source, by definition.
The GPL'ing of game engines on the other hand is a great idea.
It is a very sad time for EA right now. I saw a "history of video games" type show on GSN a few months ago. On it, they had some of the original guys from Electronic Arts... they talked about how EA was formed to give developers more freedom, and to make better games. It was founded on the idea that one day video games could be considered an art form. Hearing that almost made me cry. EA is just about the worst comapany against all those things it once stood for. I'm glad to see people are finally realizing what EA's really like, even though I've been saying it (and boycotting) for years...
in replay to jessecurry's post:
Umm...Sega already did all of those things. They have a first person mode this year, no massively multi though. But Sega has done just what you said... Madden has sold the vast majority for years, and Sega made a much better game due to viable competition... without actual NFL teams I don't see how they will be allowed to continue making better versions. No's gonna "scoop" EA when they've already devoured half the gaming industry as it is...
So, how much bigger is EA gonna get before some other game companies::cough::SEGA::cough:: get off their asses and sue EA for being a monopoly and/or supporting anti-competitive tactics (like say, I don't know... having the only NFL game available for 5 freaking years)? This is clearly retaliation to Sega's ESPN NFL 2K4 (or was it 5?..sorry, don't play football) this year putting a hurt on Madden for once.
How long will the cattle of America keep grazing at these retardedly powerful corporations before they realize the grass has gone bad?
As has already been mentioned. The entier trailor was entirely pre-rendered. Anyone with any graphical knowledge can tell you that.
If you want an idea of what the Xbox Next, or whatever the hell they're calling it, will look like... see the Unreal 3 engine.
But, with this next round of hardware... it's going to be hard for even harcore gamers to tell the difference between the systems. It's time for a standardized console! One standard to play them all...
I'll go ahead and admit that I am a huge firefox fan and have been using it for about 6 months now. That said, I tried out the original Mozilla a couple years ago and was very disappointed in it. I hear alot of people actually complaining on here about Firefox vs. Seamonkey. As far as I've seen from the mozilla roadmaps and whatnot, isn't Firefox going to become part of the mozilla suite now that it's hit the 1.0 status? Wasn't the long run goal to not only allow Firefox and Thunderbird to be used standalone, but to also replace the current Navigator and Communicator programs with them, once they hit 1.0?
That's just the problem bigberk.... We can't trust these men behind closed doors. To just let these guys run our country the way they want and not take any kind of initiative in our government does not hold true to the ways of America and Democracy.
If you want to just sit back and let the goverment take care of the goverment, trust in your president, and continue to devour what the mainstream media feeds you, you need to move to a communist country or maybe a dictatorship....that's how they do things.
Also for the record, I am not a liberal nor am I conservative... the middle is a wonderful place to be. Independant all the way...

Can we get a "troll" mod here?
Quit wasting your money... I want my damn OLED TV! :P
If you look at Sky's official FAQ it says clear as day:
"5. Is SkyOS open-source?
No. SkyOS is a closed-source operating system."
Here's the google cache if you'd like to look. Once I found that out, I quit caring...

Everyone wins, I promise you.
I think I'd rather work for M$ than EA.

Those "[insert huge corporation] is evil" posts aren't gonna go away until the average person realizes it and we all do something about it...

I can't believe no one has mentioned this yet.. but weren't both the PS1 and the Saturn released in 1996? 1994 just doesn't sound right...

If the music industry would realize this, they would only benefit. P2P file sharing is the new radio. We try before we buy...
I hate people
How is this "offtopic" ? Explain yourselves... Slashdot really needs to work on it's moderation system...
In a first person game the side monitors can be used for the ever elusive peripheral vision

oops...wrong program. I was thinking of 3Ds Max...too bad it's not in there...
In PSP all you have to do is click in the scroll wheel (ie...mouse button 3) and hold it and you can pan freely.
That was supposed to be funny, right?
Go ahead... I can't stand how adobe tries to be the microsoft of 2d graphics.
