C has a really crappy track record of being secure actually.
Sorry for asking such a stupid question but do you really need security for a cluster? If it's supposed to be a big calculator used for scientific purpose, you don't connect it anywhere. Just write you code heavily optimized in C and assembly language, connect everything using sockets or MPI and run it. If you need a front-end like a web server, it's not meant to be fast and you can write this in a more secure but slower language. Where am I wrong?
I don't. That's why I don't buy CDs anymore! Either I download some free stuff on the internet (legatorrents... just google for it) or I listen and donate to Shoutcast radio stations.
They want me to buy something? Maybe they should consider lowering the price of their CDs. CDs are almost twice as expensive as it was ten years ago, is there a reason for it? The price should lower by itself with time but instead it's going up. Now I can buy two DVDs for the price of one CD. And for the price of 2 CDs, I can buy either a book written by Knuth or a DVD/DivX player to go with my TV. And in 5 years, they'll give you a free Intel/Windows computer for each audio CD bought at Wal-mart (the CD will cost $500 and the computer $5).
I had the best idea ever: instead of saying patents, we'll use the word algorithms. Now, we just have to prevent everyone from selling algorithmic and computer sciences books because they are evil and can trick us into writing programs and libraries based on existing patents.
The other thing I hate is when Google returns different results based on the page you came from: Google is trying to autodetect the page of my country (Google.uk, Google.se, Google.fr, Google.de... I hate this) and then gives me results in the language of the detected page.
When I ask for Google.com, I'd like Google.com, not Google.random_country! (but I know, it's not a bug, it's a feature)
But ripping CDs to a convenient and high-quality file format (like Vorbis for example) gives you more flexibility over what you hear. Writing scripts to generate or control XMMS in real-time is easier to do than swap your CDs every 3 minutes because you just wanted to hear one song and need to change the style of music you listen to (change of mood, debugging time...)
One idea I had is to write a small GUI on your PDA to remote-control XMMS (but I don't have time for it:( why don't you do it for me!)
Actually, wasn't it proven by scientists that men looking at women breasts 2 minutes every day would increase their heart beat and prevent most heart attacks in the future?
It is not "France", it's just one moron who happens to be french and jealous of what the english language has done up to now. What has the guy written? nothing I'm sure! I understand that american and french people hate each other but I don't understand why someone felt the need to post such a stupid story on/. There are stupid people all around the world and we can't do anything about it.
A toll like London's one with security cameras everywhere checking your license plate from a distance? It would be worse as it can't be avoided like GPS.
once that shrinkwrap has been opened, even an act of God probably won't get your money back.
Most shops I know will happily give your money back once you explained them that you have been scammed into buying one of their unplayable media. You can talk loudly in this case, it sometime helps if they refuse.
Even though I'm a nerd, I refuse to buy "binary data sent over the internet". I demand a physical CD I can carry home and play in my car, computer or any electronic device I have. When my hard disk can crash or refuse to work, I'll never have problems with my CDs for the next 20 years (I just have not to walk on them...)
OTOH, buying CDs is simple while they are not crippled with DRM. When 100% of the new CDs are sold with spyware-hidden-macrovision-drivers, people will understand what the word DRM means and maybe switch to another media.
I imagine the habit of takin' off the sound has caught on. I'd say it took some time to happen, though...
Not for me, it is called "respect" and it comes from the education. Unless you're really sick or handicaped and forget to turn your cellphone off, I can't think of any excuse for someone not to do this.
I hope it's not the first step towards: if you want to listen to music on your PC, you'll have to buy ANOTHER copy before (or a "intellectual-property transfer license";)
Well, of course we know we're doomed and stuff but you just have not to buy copy-protected CDs to begin with. No need to bypass anything.
Subversion is just a f***ing tool, you don't need to read Knuth or Einstein on a daily basis to understand the value brought by such a program. You do apply all those algorithms and write programs so you need a place to store the source code!
However, in most European countries this comparison isn't allowed to be made.
Actually I think you're wrong: in France, comparing your product with another (like "Coke sux" in a Pepsi ad) is allowed but has NEVER been used (until recently when the new phone companies said the main phone operator was too f***ing expensive). I think it's more a cultural problem than a legal one: America has a long history of freedom of competition and capitalism, when European companies are scared of each other.
There is no anti-americanism in France, it's just a stupid court order. As for the nazi Yahoo auctions, it's just that Europe has a different version of what is free speech, which is comprehensible from a geographical point of view: Germany (with the Hitler guy) is in Europe.
Of course I don't pretend I can explain this court order, but it has absolutely nothing to do with the USA, GWB, the Irak war, the Nazis or an international Jewish/Freemasonry conspiracy, just some trademark issues.
They got the wrong person, yes, but it's only coincidence that she happened to be dead by the time they actually filed the suit.
But it was not a coincidence that she was the wrong person (actually they knew she was dead because the death certificate was sent to record officials before the suit was filed, they are even more ridiculous).
I don't think I should be prevented from using a system if I can't sleep and want to ssh at 3AM for example. It's not just a privacy problem, it's just stupid.

Who cares what they price the music at?

And as Guybrush Threepwood said in Monkey Island 1:
"Look behind you, a three-headed monkey!" (years before C&C was out)

It has to connect to whatever-the-hell-it-connects-to
It's called a computer. I know, I'm using one right now and in a few years, they'll be everywhere and you'll buy one to play games!
Actually, wasn't it proven by scientists that men looking at women breasts 2 minutes every day would increase their heart beat and prevent most heart attacks in the future?
where is French the primary language?
;)
Don't forget the last french department you stole from us: Louisiana. And to give you nightmares: Codofil (we're coming to take it back

How dare you forget Monkey Island 2? They BOTH are the greatest games ever but you can't separate them like this (even if the end of MI2 sucked...)
Spoiler: LeChuck dies at the end!

Who are these bourgeois you're talking about? Do you know the definition of this word? I only see corrupted governments here.
file says it's an AVI (798x598) DivX 4, not an mpg as the extension shows. Just rename it to .avi if it's not auto-detected.
But which one is the dead one? DragonFly?
comparative advertising being one of them
Comparative advertising IS allowed in France (but most companies are too scared to use it). That's why I don't think it's relevant here.
However, in most European countries this comparison isn't allowed to be made.
