  1. It's source? on SCO Website Using Groklaw's Content · · Score: 0, Offtopic

This is shamelessly off-topic, but I would like for once to see "its" used correctly, or at least not see "it's" used incorrectly, on Slashdot's front page. Just once.

  2. Re:Privacy Policy: AOL does NOT read IMs on AIM's New Terms Of Service · · Score: 1

If you "waive any right to privacy" in the TOS, then by definition you don't have any "private online communications" to protect. That's mincing terms pretty fine, but with a TOS like that I'm inclined to look pretty hard at their "privacy policy."

  3. Well, aside from the FBI Dossier of Nonprivacy on How has the USA PATRIOT Act Affected You? · · Score: 1
The Patriot Act hasn't affected me at all.

Oh, I'm sure the FBI has a huge dossier on me, including such sinister information as which library books I checked out last week (is it a crime to like Terry Pratchett?), what international flights I've taken recently, and what colour underwear I'm currently wearing. But I haven't heard a thing about said dossier and it doesn't bother me.

    Hasn't affected my vote, either.

I'm a college student. I did not bring any original CDs to campus, because there's nothing easier to steal than a binder full of CDs. I copied what I needed and left the rest at home.

  5. Please don't try so hard on Attracting Women Into Computer Science · · Score: 1
As a girl graduating high school and indicating an interested in computer science, I got more junk mail for summer camps, special programs, and 'women in science' support groups than I ever want to see again. The college I decided on continues to send me things from its 'Office of Diversity and Women's Programs,' and I've gotten at least four postcards personally written by female students trying to get me psyched over this.

Just give me a computer and get out of my way. Really. You can affirm my value as a programmer or scientist after I've accomplished something - just like anybody else.

  6. Re:Tough for EMTs... on Living Without a Pulse · · Score: 1

okay, the second thing you check for, first being breathing. Still. If a guy's breathing and has no pulse, that'd be even creepier.

  7. Tough for EMTs... on Living Without a Pulse · · Score: 1

It'd be kind of weird for EMTs and first responders. Our training tells us that the first thing we do for a victim is check the pulse...if 'not having one' could be considered normal, it'd throw a wrench into the works. Imagine having to wear a bracelet asserting that yes, you're not supposed to have a pulse.

Also, arterial bleeding could be harder to identify, and therefore more dangerous. There are other ways to tell if it's an artery bleeding, but the spurting is what people tend to look for.

  8. they should have followed New Zealand's lead... on Australian Gov't To Consider Spyware Laws · · Score: 4, Interesting
It would be so much neater to just go the same route for distributors of spyware as some have done for spammers. Release their personal information online along with a description of their offenses and let the outraged masses take care of it. Prosecute fully for any violent offenses, but if the offender is simply driven to cut off his phone line and Internet connection thanks to all the harassment he gets, that'd be fine.

The same approach might be less effective against corporations, but I'd still love to see an attempt.

If you have a wife/children, don't do it. No matter what happened to you - even if you came back after a few months with a great tan and a fat wallet - your time there would be hell for them. If you're on your own, then you'll have to decide for yourself whether you want to risk it.

The thing with school is that you really don't have a choice as to what you learn, you just learn.

Oh, you don't have to learn. But it's true, you don't get much choice as to what gets tossed at you.
