  1. Re:Obama better support this too on McCain Backs Nuclear Power · · Score: 1

I'd like to address two of your points: 1.) A US oil advantage is one of the major factors in WWII. In a resource conflict where the US has a steady oil supply and the "rest of the world" is desperate enough to fight us for it we would have a decided advantage. 2.) The US population as a whole is well armed and while I have no allusions as to there strength against trained modern armies they certainly wouldn't simply be at there mercy. It would be a blood bath for both sides and in the end the cost for whatever resources where gained would be higher than I believe most countries would be willing to pay thus eliminating any major alliances. You can also count on the fact that our major allies would continue to fight with us, if for no other reason than to continue to have access to our oil. That most likely puts England and by proxy Canada on our side. That leaves only open sea the Mexican border, and the barring straight. Mexico is so heavily invested in the US economy (Money from trade and immigrants) at this point they may well play out as an ally as well.

If I remember correctly one of the "BOXES" worked on this theory. Something about plugging a lamp into your phone line which would cause the voltage regulator on the surveillance equipment to increase it's output to the point it shorted out and destroyed the offending electronics. I'm not sure if it would have actually worked but I don't think they need to physically tap anything any more so it's a non issue. Maybe I'll have to find those floppies from high school that I hid in a vent in my parents house to refresh my memory.

Not that I think it's the greatest idea but a simple solution would be to build a monthly (insert better time frame if you wish) time out that would prevent the cd from booting. Then you could send your customers a fresh and patched CD once every time out period. Or perhaps build in a check that would prevent older CD's from accessing the internet. You could run a script on start up that would get the latest version number from the banks website and disable networking and display a message if the CD wasn't up to date. Neither are perfect but they would keep the average customer from connecting with outdated software.

The more diverse the gene pool is the better chance we have as a race of surviving any given incident. In the same way a congress of diverse ideas and ideals has a better chance of surviving any given political climate. Sure some parties may have far fetched and ill thought out platforms but the more diverse our representatives are the better chance we have no single one could push there agenda. I want to see greens, reds, blues, leftest, right wingers, independents, isolationists, imperialists, anarchist, and communist all coming together in a congress so divers they can't get enough votes to do anything harmful. 13. Observations of a user new to both - on Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon vs. Mac OS X Leopard · · Score: 1

I've used Linux on and off since about '97 but haven't ran it for about 3 years. I installed Ubuntu 7.10 on my laptop last night (Dell, P4 2.8GHz, 512mb). I purchased my first Mac (Power mac G4) two and a half years ago. My initial impression is that the Ubuntu interface is drastically more polished than I remember from my last Debian installation. The install was almost automagic, the OS is fairly responsive, and I thought installing from a live CD was a nice touch. The only complaint I have so far with Ubuntu is a problem getting my wireless card (wpc54g) to work. It is installed using NDIS and the XP drivers. It will establish communications with the router but then drops the connection before receiving it's configuration from DHCP. I realize this could have something to do with the driver or NDIS and not directly with Ubuntu but so far it doesn't seem that way. Now to be fair not everything "just worked" for me on the Mac either. Working with my Garmin 60csx was particularly frustrating and I had to run software to patch the OS when I upgraded from a combo drive to a super drive. I really love my Mac and I'm not at a point where I have to make a choice but if it came down to Ubuntu being my only OS I wouldn't cry. Windows free(at home any ways) for 2.5 years.

I think this is a major problem in the modern world, but specifically for the more IT oriented among us. I had always been a bit pudgy but not fat, up until two years after I graduated college I was fairly active and enjoyed backpacking and rock climbing. After college I got a job where I was very sedentary and also went through a depression (related to undiagnosed Aspergers syndrome). My days consisted of getting up in the morning drinking a coke, going to work setting in front of the computer drinking mountain dews and then going home and drinking a couple more cokes until bed. In just a few short years I gained over a hundred pounds. The IT field breeds an unhealthy life style, after sitting at a computer all day most people have to struggle to do anything active in the evenings. Couple that with the long hours, stress, loneliness, and depression that are common with "Geeks" and you have a recipe for disaster. I'm glad to here you where able to successfully change your lifestyle, it gives me hope my own struggle will pay off.

The goal of the attacks appear to be more about symbolism than actual body counts or "damage" to the us. I mean just imagine how easy it would be for a few terrorist to say blow up random shopping centers and destroy our economy over night. They would have little risk of being caught because how many malls or Walmarts have security checkpoints in the US. I think the reason this doesn't happen is two fold. First by not attacking a sense of anticipation can be created in the populus, as we all know anticipation is often stronger then the event anticipated. Second when attacking if a higher visibility more symbolic target is chosen then the result of the attack can cause much more fear than the actual body count may have ordinarily dictated. As a more mundane example 42,636 people died in car accidents in 2005 yet people aren't screaming for a "War on cars"(c). We accept that they are and inevitable part of our existence. We try to mitigate the deaths through reasonable (most of the time) laws and safety equipment that limit the impact of the event, not by installing cameras in every car to catch accident prone drivers. In comparison 2974 people died as an immediate result of the attacks on 9/11 and we have practically people where ready to tear the constitution to threads. So we can see that the response of the US populus was unduly influenced by the symbolism of the event. Jefferson and Franklin said it best- "those who would give up essential liberty for temporary safety deserve neither"
