  1. Re:Hillarious Bias on China May Restrict Genetically Engineered Rice · · Score: 2

    1) The FDA does not regulate GMO's http://environmentalcommons.org/RegulatoryDeficiencies.html So the FDA never approved or disaproved it. Neither did NASA, the CIA, or Treasury department. Whether GMO's should be regulated by the FDA or another agency is a good discussion, but stating there is some sort coverup concerning the FDA is bullshit.

    2) rBGH is chemically the same as BGH, which cow produce naturally https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bovine_somatotropin. Using rBGH has effects on the health of the animals, which has caused it to be banned in many countries. But if rBGH harmful, so is natural BGH.

    3) I read http://www.biolsci.org/v05p0706.htm. It states that there were signs of toxicity, but not proof. A very interesting study that should inspire more studies, just as the authors state. Lots of organic foods will produce the same effects on kidneys and liver, but we don't panic. This study is not definitive proof and should not be interpreted as such.

    4) It's all about risk assessment. There is not such thing as zero risk (not doing something carries risk too). If you took a bath recently, you probably exposed yourself to a high level of risk of injury or death. 400 people a year die from using natural gas. These are judgement calls. Please don't state risks as absolutes.

  2. Re:Serious addicts who "decide to use" it? on Vaccine Could Cut Heroin Addiction · · Score: 4, Informative

No. A heroin vaccine, like the cocaine vaccine, is designed to train the immune system to launch a very targeted attack against a specific molecule surface. Not by altering or interfering with pathways or receptors or neurotransmitters. Generally the target region for the antibody is not the same as the portion of the molecule that triggers receptors.

Also, we damn near force babies and small children to get vaccinations. Chances are if we don't give the injection to addicts, we'll be giving it to kids as a form of prevention.

  3. Re:Ah, Excel on Should Microsoft Put Office On the iPad? · · Score: 1

    Maybe.

I built an excel spreadsheet ("built" seems the best word) that (1) took input parameters (about a dozen variables) for a design using simple sliders, (2) did non-linear calculations of the forces and motions of the design, and (3) animated the design (direction of 3D projection of the design opening and closing based on some more sliders). Only took 2 weeks to write and a few milliseconds to run a set of calculations.

My "boss" (technically a moron), decided that wasn't enough. She paid an outside consultant $100k to run a non-linear FEA simulation of 1 combination of variables. We turned over all of our work, including my spreadsheet.

3 months later we get the results. They agreed with mine (oh, but with color animation now!). The summary suggested that we continue using the spreadsheet.

My spreadsheet continued to demonstrate that the technology my boss bet her career on was flawed ... so I order not to tell anyone and was fired for being negative about the project.

1 year later she was fired ... because the technology wouldn't work. A year in which she managed to blow about $1.5 million on the project.

So if you want to get your ass fired, Excel might be the right solution.

No. Every election cycle, I take a look at the candidates and think "Are these the best of the best? Can't we do better?" The answer to both is a big NO.

These guys are the survivors of a weird winnowing process. Egotistical enough to believe they should be president, connected enough to get support, organized enough to run, stubborn enough to stick with it, and with not too many skeletons in the closet. Can speak well and doesn't appear overtly crazy or hideously ugly.

A couple of those talents are useful as president, but there isn't a 1:1 correlation.

Makes you sort of wonder if the way candidates were chosen in a smoke filled back room wasn't an improvement. I almost wish we could elect a couple committees to go and recruit a presidential candidate each for the whole population to then vote on. Call them the hypothetical R and D committees.
