Obviously guns don't cause people to shoot each other, there are more complex reasons for it. That said, however, it's the access to high-capacity weapons (like the ones that were banned) that enables these folks to go out and kill half their highschool. Preventing gun makers from building these guns obviously makes it tougher for people to get them, which is a Good Thing -- nobody has a legitimate reason for owning a 30 round clip.

But the Columbine shooting happened during the Clinton Administration AFTER the assault weapons ban was in place. If you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns.

  20. Re:DNA Over Signal on SETI Finds Interesting Signal · · Score: 5, Interesting

Well, the problem with radio signals is that they degrade so fast, and the fact that what we transmit will probably not be intelligible to any foreign species, they may get the drift that we are semi-intelligent, but probably not enough information to decipher where we are from or our purpose. With physical artifacts, as long as the beings can see visible light, there is a good chance that they can get a good jist of what we are trying to convey. We can draw pictures of humans and animals and plants on our planet, and possible draw basic symbols and graphs to make out basic mathematical concepts, and possibly the general location of Earth. While it would be much more difficult to locate a physical object than a radio signal, the short range of a radio way probably makes it impractical for long distance communication in space. Of course, there is the possibility of physical objects degrading with time, but with proper materials this should be pretty limited.

A collision refers to when two differnet inputs to an algorithm compute out to the same encrypted string, such as inputing HI and HEY into MD5 and them both coming out to YJFPSL(complete BS). If this is possible, then it is easier for someone to reverse a hash to the plaintext because there is a link between the HI and HEY in the algorithm, and with that knowledge it is easier to reverse the hash.

This may be incomplete or inaccurate, as I don't study cryptography for a living or as a hobby, so anyone who knows better correct me.
