Is there an official list of SHA1SUMs published by Microsoft so that an average user could tell if system files have been compromised? This may not always work since, on Windows machines, files with the same name are not identical from one machine to another. Thanks.

I have been one of those highly-trained educated people and I can tell you this type of announcement is most likely 100% true and 150% BS (simultaneously!). The scientific part will be true, but there is NO appreciation of what it takes to get something into production in a real product. These stories are released to 1) increase the stature of the researchers in the scientific community (which helps them get funding and therefore keep their job) and 2) seduce VC groups because these days almost every professor is the CEO of a start-up. {At the last conference I attended (ISSCC) I think I was the only person I ran into that wasn't the president of something.} As proof of this I offer the huge number of web sites that advertise a neato product without showing any way to buy anything. I unfortunately have to agree. If you are tormented by a bully, there is usually no good way for the grown-ups to help you. I talked myself out of some fights, but when that didn't work I fought back. Of course there were no guns then... Classic story: While riding on the bus, the guy behind me repeatedly whacked me over the head with a book. The last time he hit me it was so hard my vision blanked out for a second. I turned around and clipped him on the jaw. He said, "Meet me after school to settle this." I was really afraid, but I showed up. He didn't and I never had problems again. In my second stint at jury duty, we were allowed pencil and paper during deliberations because there were 18 charges to keep track of. How to get out of it? I just started a new job and I might get fired if I serve. (Doesn't always work.) I think the defendant should take the stand in his own defense or else he/she looks more guilty. I know the defendant or his/her attorneys or the victim. Anyone arrested by the police must be guilty of something. I don't understand English well enough. I play tennis with the District Attorney's wife. I or a family member have been arrested recently. etc. etc. etc. You should serve if asked! I found it really interesting and you get to trash the annoying attorneys during deliberation which is always fun.

Try reading "The Last of the Mohicans" by James Fenimore Cooper. The language is incredible (though criticized by Mark Twain for being overly formal). My wife has a Prius and I have to admit I didn't know about the three second deal until a few weeks ago. I think there are reasons they want the time delay. Firstly, you don't want a moving car to power down if you poke the button by accident for safety reasons. Secondly, the transmission may be destroyed if the vehicle is off and coasting at a speed higher than the maximum allowed towing speed (maybe 40mph). However, my brother and I can't figure why the brakes don't stop these runaway cars.
