My personal favorite was Jonathan Linden, better known as Johnny Rotten from the popular punk band, the "Sex Pistols." He was detained because "Linden" is phonetically similar to "Ladin."
Your favorite, huh? To bad that it never happened. Several stories have noted that the airlines use software which uses and algorithm derived from an indexing system known as "Soundex" first used in the 1880 census, and that the last name of Johnny Lydon of Sex Pistols fame, has the same value under this system is Laden, of terrorist fame. However, Johnny Lydon has never been detained because of this.
FTFA, text of the judge's decision:
"It is well-established that lack of intention or ability to carry out a threat is not relevant."
So, from a legal standpoint, just making the threat was enough and the school had to take it seriously, not because law enforcement or a psycologist's opinions about it, but because the teacher took it seriously. They'd have left the school district open to litigation if they had just ignored it.
Gee, I don't know...maybe the guy that I was replying to?
The average home user will have their vacation photos, some music, their resume, and so on. Its may not be "critical" but anyone would be pissed if microsoft tried to hold it hostage. Not to mention blocking you from doing online banking, chatting with friends, reading the news, listening to music, and playing solitaire.
If that's all that he's doing, I can think of a nice OS that handles all of that just fine and doesn't cost any money. Again, if the guy is running a pirated OS, he just doesn't have any room to bitch if it shuts down. Particularly if he endured 6 months of nag screens before it got to that point.
Why the hell would MS care if they move from a pirated version of Windows to something else? Big whoop, they aren't making money either way. And if someone has critical data on a system running a pirated OS, I'm not inclined to feel much pity.
How often do we hear - "And the real world observations are EXACTLY what scientists predicted" versus "Based on these unexpected results, scientists will have to go back to the drawing board"
Somehow, I doubt that such a statement would garner any headline space. Most often the results are what was expected, but "scientists were right" isn't going to be a big story. Not even on Slashdot. OK...maybe on Slashdot, but most other places wouldn't publish it.
And if you think this is anything but a lawyer trick designed to prevent him from being extradited, I've got a fortune amassed by an ex-general in Nigeria that I could use some help getting out of the country...
The old adage "research is never wasted" is somewhat relevant to this subject. One would expect that all of the work they were doing for DNF was used as a tech base for their other games that were released.
It's a fun game, but you are right, people should wait for the patch. Currently I'm crashing out to the desktop at random intervals. It can go two hours without a problem then crash or it can do it 3 times in a half hour. Either way, I have yet to exit gracefully from a playing session, and have lost a lot of game play to these crashes. It's frustrating and I've quit playing it for now, hoping that a patch will be available soon so that I can continue.
Save your money for now.
Depends on the town. The number of alarms is the number of substations that respond-- in LA a five alarm fire would be huge. In my town, the entire fire department will show up for a grass fire on the side of the freeway because they usually don't have a lot to do and like to race around with the sirens going when they get a chance.
You forgot that Dell also provides a keyboard, mouse, and a flat panel monitor for that $100 less price. Not to mention that all those great iLife programs have free PC equivalents (and you won't have to shell out $79 to upgrade them next year).
I said that part of the war was securing access to their oil
So, with these three wars for oil we've fought-- Gulf War I, Afghanistan, and Gulf War II, why the hell am I still paying $2.15 a gallon for my gas? The damned left wingers have been yelling "blood for oil" for fifteen years, and nothing has materialized. Remember how the war in Afghanistan was all about the pipeline from Turkmenistan to Pakistan? Somehow it never got built.....I guess no one wanted to build it from a chaotic country, through a chaotic country, to another chaotic country. Poor planing that.

Bah! Everyone knows that those flappy-headed Canadians don't have any teeth.
Larry Niven did this in his novel "A World Out of Time" published in 1976. Damned internet generation.
Hell...not only do they have 10 and 12 cyclinder motorcycles, someone build a 48 cyclinder one. http://www.bigbikeriders.com/48cyl.htm
It's always that way. And she probably doesn't let him hang out with his single friends any more either.
