  1. Prevention on Tracking Sex Offenders via GPS for Life · · Score: 1

Is it not possible to conduct some tests on these offenders to determine the risk of repeating the crime? Some people will change after paying time in jail, some will never change.

If someone's going to commit the crime again, I believe it's not too difficult to remove the tracker and get on with the business in a short period of time, which means it'll still be too late for the victims.

Imagine if MJ was found guilty in Florida, paparazzi would have rejoiced. Actually not, the boy was 13.

  10. K.I.S.S. on Computers in Space Examined · · Score: 5, Insightful

The fewer components you have, the less likely you are to encounter a failure.

I remember reading something about most space missions are pre-determined and very straight forward, there's no need for difficult maneuver like one has to execute in a X-Wing.

Having said that, there are still plenty of complicated, unexpected problems in space, but these problems have to be analysed and decision made by people on earth.

I guess it's all circumstantial, I can't even operate my 2001 Toyota electric window if the engine's dead, but my 1989 Toyota has no such problem. So if I crashed into a river, I hope I was driving the '89, but if I'm crashing into another car, I want my '01.

  11. Sex Lowers IQs on Email Worse Than Marijuana For Intelligence? · · Score: 4, Informative

    The Register's story here

The survey didn't mention how subjects were selected, what if some of them are also drug users? And I think people are more willing to reveal their email addiction than their drug adddiction.

I believe it's more about social-acceptability. If the respondents think that being distracted by emails is not unacceptable (as shown in the article), they will allow themselves to be distracted.

Next up we will see how sex lower people's IQ. Imaging you're answering questions in front of naked marketing chicks.

I'm trying to think of some uses for this expensive gadget.

Maybe for company with some employees in the office, some on the road, this and that, they can buy a few shells and share among staff?

So the sales guy with his core will take a PDA shell out, and when he's back to the office, he can plug his core into a desktop shell and work immediately without the need to sync data, especially if it is sync'ing into somebody else's desktop.

  15. MS Paint on Why Did Adobe Buy Macromedia? · · Score: 5, Funny

Like the article said, Adobe was simply acting out of fear, uncetainty and doubt. Microsoft already has a competent flagship MS Paint, it doesn't need anything else.

And what about Gimp? Is it really not a threat to Adobe at all?

It'll be fun to watch if Microsoft hinted that it's looking at forking Gimp, Adobe will go nuts about that!

  16. Classfication flags on More Freedom for DVD Players? · · Score: 5, Interesting

Will we be seeing movies with built-in flags, so that parents only need to configure the player to skip [sex(base 1/2/3/4)], [violance(blood 1/2/3/4)] etc, it'll be similar to the rating/parental card on cable TVs except with better, more specific control over the content.

  18. Accountability on MS: Beta Software Good Enough for Production Use · · Score: 5, Insightful

    Didn't Google start all this?

The main thing is, if something breaks, the company just puts its hands up and says "opps, sorry it's a Beta", and I bet there will still be plenty of users (businesses) who are willing try them.

In addition to the accountability shift, companies can roll out patches in a more timely fashion. With beta-security-patch, MS is free to distribute patches to plug holes even on a daily basis.

  19. Preview/Trailer on Finnish Firm Claims Fake P2P Hash Technology · · Score: 3, Interesting

I guess there are two schools here.

One believes this kind of fake files will only add burden to the internet, as users will just download one fake file after another until they got a hit.

The other believes that such annoyance will put most people off, because the total time/cost it takes to acquire something is now higher than the actual product.

I don't think MP3s will be affected because you can start playing the song if you've got the first bit. Can/will other file formats do that too?
