  1. Sad News on What Happened to Simputer? · · Score: 4, Interesting

My sympathy goes to them for failing twice.

I wonder if they did have market research to identify the need? You can't just build and hope they will come anymore.

This reminds me of a joke where a group of settlers came to this island and gifted the chief some pet gold fish as a gesture of good faith, but the chief just ate all the them.

  2. Careful though on Online Freedom of Speech Act Introduced in House · · Score: 4, Insightful

What's to stop the creation of another internet-specific regulation, which can flex its muscle solely on internet publication without worrying about collateral damage?

  3. Door of no return? on Hollywood Looks to BitTorrent for Distribution · · Score: 5, Insightful

The thing is, if any movie producers/directors decided to distribute their works over the internet, they might not be able(allowed) to go on big screen anymore.

So any promising producers might not take up the offers, and those less-promising ones might only attract a lower level of interested audience.

We have seen few success stories in online music distribution by bands, but the mainstream still hasn't moved yet.

Having said that, anything has to start somewhere.

  4. Calling Home on Firefox Site Visits Up 237% · · Score: 5, Funny

Does this take into account of the auto software update checks?

And how does NetRatings know the gender of the visitors? Maybe if a visitor is quick and direct, it's a male; If a visitor is browsing around few sections back and forward, it's a female?

  5. But how? on Survey Reveals Americans Support Blog Censorship · · Score: 2, Interesting

Yeah, it's easy to say blogs need censorship, but how is official going to censor blogs.

Are we going to see a rating on each blog? G, PG, M, R, and P? For PG Rating, mothers will have to read blogs for their innocent children.

It a blog's breaking laws, then there are already venues to take action.

  6. Who is the sore thumb? on The Sony/MP3 Saga Continues · · Score: 5, Insightful

Sometimes I don't understand why companies would go to such an extent to come out with some nice products, then hopelessly find a way to ruin it.

But then again, maybe I think too much. All these gadgets are sold for brand rather than technology, most consumers really don't care whether or not they can shares songs with others using this device, they can simply lend CDs out like they've been doing with tapes.

As long as Sony has designed a good GUI that users can (1) pop in the CDs, (2) select songs, (3) transfer to the player, its technical responsibility is done.

The more important job is to make it look and feel cool so that you want one if your friend got one.

  7. Big Fight on MS Plans Low-Cost Windows for Brazil · · Score: 5, Insightful

The Brazilian government has launched an initiative called "PC Conectado" (Connected PC), via which it hopes to sell up to one million computers (each costs $300 - $400 U.S.) to lower-middle income Brazilians this year. The cost of the PCs will be partially subsidized by the government.

I wonder if MS can justify $400 million to secure 1 million Brazilian users. They might as well pay for the PCs with pre-installed Windows OS free of charge.

Is this excessive even by MS standard?

  9. Registrar vs Registrar on Recovering Domains from Negligent Registrars? · · Score: 5, Interesting

From my experience, it's quite effective if you find another registrar to take over the domain hosting. They're in the same business, and will go the extra mile to secure new clients.

Most of the time it's because we don't know what/where to ask, that's why you need lawyers to defend even the most obvious case.

  10. Fly Racing on Remote-Controlled Flies · · Score: 4, Interesting

I once saw a fly racing competition where the contestants must get their flies to weave through a course.

They used water pistols filled with fruit juice. Flies' response time was slow but accuracy was extremely high.

  11. Still Risky on Secure Hard Drive Deletion Appliance? · · Score: 5, Insightful

If you have something so important, it might be best to destroy/keep the dead drives and pay for new ones, which aren't that expensive compared to the risk of someone finding out a way to recover your data even after it's been processed by the state-of-the-art secure deletion processor.

I believe the information is secured only if it's still in your hand.

  12. What Bad Things? on The Top Three Reasons for Humans in Space · · Score: 0

I can understand the first two reasons, but what are the bad things that can happen to Earth that won't happen else where?

If they're talking about things like polution, population, nuclear explosion etc., then aren't we just running away from problems by creating more problems?

  13. Cheating on Computer Program Makes Essay Grading Easier · · Score: 4, Insightful

  14. AFP vs Google News on Google Delivering Factual Answers · · Score: 5, Interesting

This is no doubt a good service for users, but will it attract complaints from site owners like AFP?

Personally I would rather get the answer without going into a site and read through things to find it, and if I want to, I can click on the link and find out more from the site. However the content providers will certainly want you to come to their sites as soon as possible, look around and maybe explore other sections?

  15. Risk vs Reward on Crack Found in Shuttle Tank · · Score: 5, Insightful

Pardon me for being insensitive here, but I always wonder what the problem is with a potentially problematic space shuttle? Is it the cost, bad PR or safety of the crews?

It always puzzles me that a country which recruits hundreds of thousands of soldiers and spends hundreds of billions of dollars to go to wars with guaranteed casualties (and not all die in action) are so timid in losing a relatively small percentage of lives/dollars to go to space.

Everything has a risk, if you send those astronauts to do sky diving (or just drive to the supermarket) often enough, some of them will get killed too.

Why can't we allow those who are more than willing to sacrify their lives to go to space to do just that?

I understand that we have the responsibility to maintain certain level of reliability and to minimize risk, but all the safety concerns are slowing things way down. Other countries are catching up fast, maybe their lives are cheap? Or maybe they knew and anticipated the risk of losing lives to achieve something great?

I guess we can't go to the moon now because of the deadly moon dust, imagine what would have happened if we discovered it before landing on the moon?

  16. Veggie Boy on Finally ... RoboShark! · · Score: 5, Funny

  18. What are they using? on Yankee Group Survey Says Windows, Linux TCO Equal · · Score: 5, Insightful

The survey needs to take into account what OS the respondents are currently using, that's the single most important factor.

You don't use an OS that you don't like, and if that's not true (e.g. you're forced to use a pre-installed OS), then you probably wouldn't know any better alternative if you've been using only one OS.

If a Linux-only user said Windows is better, or vice versa, what does that mean? How does he come to this conclusion? The most credible answers should be from Multi-OS users.

I'm not saying this study is inaccurate, but there are simly too many things to consider, and this may well lead to a simple conclusion - software choice is more on personal preference than anything else.

And finding partners for sex using bluetooth mobile is as productive as asking a/s/l on IRC channels, or Mrs Gump's box of chocolate.

  20. Loyalty Fee? on San Francisco Attempts to Regulate Blogging · · Score: 5, Interesting

This is only applicable to blogs that mention candidates for local office. So I don't think you have to pay if you're blogging about your dog.

However, this might give corporates some ideas. For example, if your blogs contain certain movies, music, celebrities, you may have to start paying for the loyalty fee, like what radio stations are doing now.

I don't know many countries that it is legal to sell your offsprings. So this raises an important question - if someone went to the airport today and announced that he was going to set off a bomb, can he use "Hey it's April Fool" as an excuse to get away?
